What began as a carefree weekend getaway to Genting Highlands quickly turned into an unforgettable &mdash; and stressful &mdash; experience for 28-year-old Singaporean entrepreneur Sherylynn Kok.
In April, Kok, who runs a frozen food supply company and a social media agency, was on holiday with her parents and boyfriend when she decided to try her luck at the slot machines. After suffering a string of losses, she switched machines and within five minutes triggered a bonus round. The game offered four jackpot tiers &mdash; mini, minor, major and grand &mdash; each increasingly lucrative but harder to win.
To her astonishment, the reels aligned, and a message appeared on the screen: she had landed the grand jackpot &mdash; RM800,000 (about SGD244,000).
Casino staff, accompanied by security guards, swiftly verified the win before escorting her to the cashier&rsquo;s desk. There, Kok was handed her prize: eight bundles of RM100,000 each, comprising RM10,000 notes stuffed into a backpack so heavy she described it as &ldquo;crazy heavy&rdquo;.
Security Worries and Sleepless Night

Although casino guards accompanied her back to her hotel room, they reminded her that their protection ended the moment she left the gaming floor. With such a fortune in cash suddenly in her possession, Kok and her family grew anxious about safety. That night, they took turns staying awake to guard the money-filled backpack.
The excitement of winning quickly gave way to the practical problem of what to do next.
Banking Barriers and Airport Shock

The following morning, the family attempted to return to Singapore with the winnings. At the airport, however, Kok discovered a critical hurdle: carrying large sums of cash out of Malaysia requires prior approval from Bank Negara, the central bank.
As it was the weekend, banks were closed, and wire transfers were not possible. To make matters worse, she was told that remittance of the funds could only be done via a Malaysian bank account, something neither she nor her family had.
With no immediate solution, Kok&rsquo;s parents flew home as planned, while she and her boyfriend stayed behind to resolve the situation.
The next day, Kok opened an account with OCBC Malaysia. The account&rsquo;s dual-currency function allowed her to switch easily between Malaysian ringgit and Singapore dollars. This finally gave her a legitimate means of moving the money home without risking confiscation or breaking regulations.
Though the ordeal delayed her return, Kok said she was relieved to have found a safe and proper channel for her winnings.
A Disciplined Gambler, Not a High Roller

Despite her extraordinary luck, Kok insists she is a disciplined gambler. Before playing, she always sets a firm limit on how much she is willing to lose.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t gamble because I want to make money,&rdquo; she explained. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s just occasional weekend entertainment when I have nothing else planned.&rdquo;
Friends encouraged her to splurge or invest in big ventures, but Kok has chosen a cautious path. She admitted to being risk-averse and uncomfortable with complex financial products, so the money now sits safely in her bank account.
Her approach is shaped partly by cautionary tales. She recounted how an acquaintance squandered a S$1.4 million Toto jackpot in less than a year on failed business investments and lavish spending. Determined not to make the same mistake, she continues to live what she calls a &ldquo;low-maintenance&rdquo; lifestyle.
A Windfall, But Not a Lifetime Fortune

Her experience underscores not only the exhilaration of a jackpot win but also the real-world hurdles of managing sudden wealth &mdash; from navigating banking regulations to making disciplined financial choices. What appeared at first to be pure luck quickly became a test of patience, foresight and responsibility.
For Kok, the money is less about instant riches and more about the rare opportunity to slow down and live life on her own terms &mdash; a kind of freedom she values above the sum itself.

Apple has unveiled a new MacBook Pro range that brings touchscreen support to its laptops for the first time, alongside tandem OLED displays, the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and a thinner, lighter design. Called the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, the new models come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes and will be sold alongside the existing MacBook Pro models with Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED displays.

Based on these starting prices, the new touchscreen models cost RM1,700 more for the 14-inch M5 Pro and RM2,000 more for the 16-inch M5 Pro.
At the top end, a fully configured 16-inch model with an M5 Max chip, 128GB of unified memory, 16TB of SSD storage and nano-texture glass costs RM64,174 in Malaysia.
First MacBook With Touchscreen Support

The biggest change is the new PROLED XDR display, which uses tandem OLED technology instead of the mini-LED panels in existing models. Apple says it delivers a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 and peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits for HDR and SDR content. ProMotion supports adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz, while support for P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces is designed to benefit photographers, video editors and other professionals working with colour-sensitive material.
Users can tap, swipe, pinch to zoom, drag and drop items directly on the display while continuing to use the keyboard and trackpad. The touch sensor is integrated into the panel to reduce input delay, and Apple has redesigned the hinge to make the screen more stable when users touch it. Apple has not announced Apple Pencil support.
Dynamic Island also comes to the MacBook Pro, replacing the familiar notch with an interactive area for notifications, music controls, calls and Live Activities. The display has an optional nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare in bright environments.
Thinner Design, More Storage and Familiar Ports

The redesigned chassis is both thinner and lighter. The 14-inch model weighs around 1.36kg, compared with 1.60kg for its mini-LED counterpart, while the 16-inch model weighs about 1.81kg, down from 2.14kg. Apple has also brought back the illuminated Apple logo on the lid, a feature last seen on older MacBook designs before it was dropped in 2016.
Battery life is rated at up to 22 hours for the 14-inch model and up to 24 hours for the 16-inch version. Fast charging can take the battery from zero to 50% in around 30 minutes. Storage can now be configured up to 16TB, double the 8TB maximum on the existing range, while unified memory goes up to 128GB.
Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe charging and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Wireless features include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The M5 Pro model supports up to three external displays, while M5 Max configurations can connect up to four.
Other features include a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones and a six-speaker sound system with redesigned woofers that Apple says deliver 50% deeper bass. The new laptops run macOS 27.
Is the Touchscreen Worth the Premium?
The new MacBook Pro is designed for users who want touchscreen interaction alongside traditional laptop controls, a high-end OLED display and expanded storage options. However, the existing mini-LED models remain available at lower starting prices, with similar chip options and battery life.
For Malaysian buyers, the decision largely comes down to whether the touchscreen, OLED panel and lighter design justify paying more. Those who mainly work with a keyboard and trackpad may prefer to save the difference, while creative professionals could find the display and direct touch controls useful for their workflow.

Apple Launches Touchscreen MacBook Pro in Malaysia, Prices Start at RM11,999

Malaysians travelling to mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea, the Philippines and Laos can now make QR payments at participating merchants using supported Malaysian mobile banking apps. The new service, launched by Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) through Ant International&rsquo;s Alipay+ platform, means travellers can pay directly through their existing banking app without downloading another application or signing up for an Alipay+ account.
At launch, the service is available through Maybank, CIMB and Hong Leong Bank, while Bank Islam is expected to join soon. PayNet says the service will be expanded progressively to more overseas destinations and may also be adopted by other participating banks and e-wallet providers.
How to Make Overseas DuitNow QR Payments

The payment process is intended to be as straightforward as using DuitNow QR at home. Travellers do not need to download a separate app or create an Alipay+ account. However, the service currently works by customers scanning the merchant&rsquo;s QR code; it does not support the reverse arrangement in which a merchant scans a QR code displayed on the customer&rsquo;s phone. Users should check that their bank supports the feature and look for the Alipay+ logo before attempting to pay.
PayNet Extends Its Partnership with Alipay+

The launch builds on an existing partnership between PayNet and Ant International. Since November 2023, travellers using supported Alipay+ partner wallets have been able to pay at DuitNow QR merchants in Malaysia. That arrangement has helped local businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises, accept payments from international visitors using participating overseas wallets.
The new outbound service extends the connection in the other direction, enabling customers of participating Malaysian banks to pay at Alipay+-supported merchants abroad. Rather than requiring travellers to learn a new payment system or register for another digital wallet, the feature uses the banking apps they already have.
PayNet chief executive officer Praveen Rajan said cross-border payments should feel as familiar as paying at home. He added that collaboration between financial institutions and international payment partners can extend Malaysia&rsquo;s national payment infrastructure beyond its borders, make spending across borders easier and strengthen the country&rsquo;s economic links with the region.
The initiative also aligns with Bank Negara Malaysia&rsquo;s broader vision for cross-border payments that are faster, more efficient and inclusive.
Cross-Border QR Payments Continue to Grow

The expansion comes amid a sharp rise in cross-border payment activity. PayNet recorded nearly 30 million cross-border transactions in 2025, approximately 150% more than in 2024. Transactions linked to mainland China accounted for much of that growth, according to the company.
Alipay+ connects more than two billion user accounts through over 50 international payment partners, with more than 150 million merchants across over 210 markets, according to Ant International. The network gives connected payment services a wider reach, although the new DuitNow QR feature is only available at participating merchants in the five destinations announced at launch.
DuitNow QR is already interoperable with payment schemes in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia, allowing participating users to make cross-border payments in those markets. The latest Alipay+ launch is a separate expansion that brings outbound access through supported Malaysian banking apps to the five newly announced destinations.
PayNet will continue working with financial institutions and regional partners to bring the service to more apps and markets. Other PayNet-participating banks and e-wallet providers can also adopt the outbound QR capability, potentially allowing more Malaysians to make overseas payments through services they already use.
For travellers, the main benefit is convenience: in supported destinations, eligible users can pay by scanning a participating merchant&rsquo;s QR code through their Malaysian banking app. Before travelling, customers should confirm availability with their bank and remember that acceptance depends on the merchant displaying the Alipay+ logo.

Malaysians Can Now Use DuitNow QR To Pay In Five Overseas Destinations

The High Court has ordered a Threads user who was sued for defamation by Malaysian fashion entrepreneur Christy Ng to publish a public apology in two newspapers within four working days, after he told the court that he could not afford the publication costs.
Judge Arziah Mohamed Apandi directed J Vikneshvra Rau, 36, who operates the Threads account &ldquo;archnionverse&rdquo;, to publish an unconditional apology in English-language newspaper The Star and Malay-language newspaper Harian Metro. The wording must be acceptable to Ng and her company, Christy Ng Sdn Bhd.
The order was issued during committal proceedings over Rau&rsquo;s failure to comply with an earlier court direction. However, the judge declined to find that he had deliberately disobeyed the order, saying his explanation about his financial circumstances had merit.
What Happened in the Christy Ng Defamation Case?

The dispute began after Rau allegedly published defamatory statements about Ng&rsquo;s business practices on Threads in November 2025. Ng and her company subsequently filed a civil suit against him on 25 November 2025, arguing that the statements had harmed their reputation.
On 13 February 2026, the High Court entered a judgment in default of appearance against Rau after he failed to appear in the proceedings. The court issued an injunction preventing him from publishing further defamatory statements and ordered him to issue a full-page, unconditional public apology in newspapers selected by Ng, as well as on his social media account.
Rau later published an apology on Threads on 19 March 2026. However, he did not publish the apology in the newspapers as required by the court order.
On 25 June, the High Court awarded total damages of RM180,000 to Ng and her company. Of this amount, RM140,000 was awarded to Ng personally, while RM40,000 went to Christy Ng Sdn Bhd. The court also ordered interest and legal costs, with RM10,000 in legal costs reported separately.
After Rau failed to fulfil the newspaper apology requirement, Ng and her company sought permission to initiate committal proceedings against him. The court granted permission on 15 September. Rau was scheduled to attend a hearing on 19 October but failed to appear, leading to further proceedings over his non-compliance.

Rau Says He Cannot Afford the Newspaper Apology

During the latest hearing, Rau told the court that he was willing to comply with the order but lacked the money to pay for the newspaper publication.
He explained that he was self-employed and earned money through resume-writing services, charging between RM150 and RM300 per job. According to his testimony, the income was only enough to cover basic expenses, including food and bills.
Rau told the court that his last recorded sale was on 13 October and that he had earned no income since then. He said he had only RM50 left in his Touch &rsquo;n Go eWallet, while his car loan and home loan repayments were more than four months overdue.
He also expressed concern that his home could be auctioned if he failed to keep up with the repayments. When questioned about his support network, Rau said his family had distanced themselves from him, his wife had left, and he no longer had friends he could rely on for assistance.
&ldquo;I have no income but I am willing to comply,&rdquo; he told the court, explaining that he did not have the means to pay for the newspaper apology.
However, Ng&rsquo;s lawyer, Foong Cheng Leong, challenged Rau&rsquo;s explanation. He argued that Rau had failed to comply with the court order and allegedly continued to mock Ng and publish false statements about her on social media.
Foong also pointed out that Rau had not filed an affidavit or supporting documents to substantiate his financial difficulties. He further said the RM180,000 damages awarded by the court had yet to be paid.
Court Gives Four Days to Publish the Apology

After hearing the parties, Judge Arziah said Rau had provided a detailed account of his financial commitments and that there was merit in his explanation.
The judge ruled that the plaintiffs had not proved beyond reasonable doubt that Rau&rsquo;s failure to comply amounted to deliberate contempt of court. She considered his non-compliance to have arisen from his financial circumstances and personal difficulties rather than an intentional refusal to obey the order.
Nevertheless, the original requirement to publish a public apology remains in force. Rau was ordered to prepare the statement immediately and publish it in The Star and Harian Metro within four working days, no later than 31 October. The wording must satisfy Ng and her company.

To address his inability to pay upfront, the court directed Ng to arrange and advance the publication costs. Rau must reimburse her once the amount is communicated to him. If he cannot pay, the publication costs will be added to the sums already ordered by the court.

Malaysia Remains ASEAN's Second-Freest Economy

Nevertheless, the two-place drop highlights the difference between improving a country's own performance and keeping pace with other economies. Although Malaysia achieved a higher score, other countries made sufficient progress to overtake it in the rankings.

The Zurich Savings &amp; Protection Plan is available directly through the ShopeePay app, allowing users to access the product digitally without having to visit an insurance branch.
To find the plan, users can open the ShopeePay app and select &ldquo;Insurance&rdquo; from the homepage, followed by &ldquo;Endowment&rdquo;.
The launch expands ShopeePay's existing relationship with Zurich. The platform already works with Zurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad and Zurich General Takaful Malaysia Berhad, but this is the first time its digital distribution partnership has extended to Zurich's life insurance arm.
It also builds on the earlier availability of Zurich Critical Illness insurance through the platform.
Entry Premium To Be Lowered To RM100

The plan currently requires a minimum premium of RM500, but Zurich and ShopeePay are planning to reduce this to RM100.
While the lower entry point has not yet been implemented, it could make the product more accessible to Malaysians who want to start building financial protection with a smaller initial commitment.
Both companies said the broader goal is to make insurance and financial protection more accessible through digital platforms that consumers already use in their everyday lives.
Junior Cho, Country CEO of Zurich Malaysia, highlighted that Malaysia's protection gap is closely linked to accessibility, saying insurers need to reach consumers where they already are rather than expecting them to seek out traditional channels.
Family Takaful Plans Coming Next Year

The partnership is also expected to expand into family takaful in 2027.
ShopeePay and Zurich Takaful Malaysia Berhad plan to introduce family takaful products through the platform, giving users access to Syariah-compliant protection alongside conventional insurance options.
Family takaful provides life and financial protection based on Syariah principles, offering Malaysians another option when planning for their long-term financial needs.

ShopeePay And Zurich Launch Two-Year Savings And Protection Plan From RM500

Only 39% of active Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members in Malaysia&rsquo;s formal sector are currently on track to meet the fund&rsquo;s Basic Savings benchmark by the age of 60, highlighting the challenge of ensuring Malaysians have enough money to support themselves throughout retirement.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the proportion of members meeting the age-based Basic Savings benchmark increased from 36% in June 2025 to 39% in June 2026.
While this represents progress, around six in 10 active formal-sector EPF members remain below the benchmark for their age.
The government is targeting for six in 10 EPF members to meet the Basic Savings benchmark by 2030 under the EPF&rsquo;s Retirement Income Adequacy (RIA) framework.
What Is The RM390,000 EPF Savings Target?

The RM390,000 figure is the EPF&rsquo;s full Basic Savings level under its three-tier Retirement Income Adequacy framework, which took effect in 2026.
The RIA framework is designed to give members a clearer guide to how much they may need for retirement. It consists of three savings levels:

<li>Basic Savings: RM390,000</li>
<li>Adequate Savings: RM650,000</li>
<li>Enhanced Savings: RM1.3 million</li>
</ul>
Basic Savings is intended to cover essential retirement needs, while Adequate Savings aims to support a reasonable standard of living. Enhanced Savings represents a higher level of financial security in retirement.
According to EPF, RM390,000 is designed to support an initial monthly withdrawal of around RM1,625 in the first year of retirement, with the framework projecting withdrawals over 20 years from age 60 to 80.
The RM390,000 Benchmark Is Being Phased In

Although RM390,000 is the full Basic Savings benchmark at age 60, members are not expected to reach the amount immediately.
EPF is gradually introducing the target over five years to give members time to adjust to the higher savings benchmark.
The schedule is:

<li>2027: RM300,000</li>
<li>2028: RM330,000</li>
<li>2029: RM360,000</li>
<li>2030: RM390,000</li>
</ul>
The benchmark is also age-based, meaning members are assessed against the amount appropriate for their age rather than being expected to have RM390,000 at any point before the full target takes effect.
Why Retirement Savings Remain A Concern

Anwar said the latest figures showed progress, but warned that too many Malaysians remain at risk of running out of savings during retirement.
With retirement potentially lasting 20 to 25 years, the issue is not simply accumulating a large lump sum but ensuring those savings can provide a sustainable income throughout retirement.
Speaking at the EPF International Social Wellbeing Conference 2026, Anwar also highlighted the financial pressures facing households today.
He said retirement planning cannot be viewed purely as a matter of financial literacy when many households are already dealing with immediate expenses such as food, rent and education.
This means the ability to save for retirement is closely linked to having sufficient and stable income. Retirement security therefore also depends on wages, decent employment and the ability to contribute consistently.
Informal And Gig Workers Remain Part Of The Challenge

Another challenge is extending retirement savings coverage to Malaysians working outside conventional formal employment.
The growth of self-employment, gig work and other non-traditional forms of employment means some workers may not receive regular employer contributions to their EPF accounts.
The government has introduced initiatives to broaden coverage, including i-Saraan, which provides incentives for eligible self-employed and informal workers who contribute to EPF.
There is also i-Saraan Plus, which provides additional support for eligible e-hailing and p-hailing workers, while i-Suri has been expanded to support retirement savings among women involved in unpaid care work.
These programmes aim to encourage more Malaysians outside traditional employment to build retirement savings.
EPF Shifts Focus From Savings To Retirement Income

EPF chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said retirement planning should not focus solely on how much money members have accumulated. Instead, members need to consider how their savings can provide a sustainable income throughout retirement.
This approach is reflected in the RIA framework, which connects savings levels with potential retirement income rather than treating EPF savings simply as a lump sum. EPF has also introduced measures to help members manage their savings over a longer retirement period.
One is i-Emas, which provides regular monthly payments under the existing Age 55/60 Withdrawal facility. As of June 2026, more than 25,000 members had opted for monthly withdrawals, including more than 7,000 aged 55 and more than 19,000 aged 60.
Another initiative, i-Legasi, allows eligible members with savings above the RM650,000 Adequate Savings level to transfer eligible excess savings to the EPF accounts of immediate family members.
Government Expands Support For Older Malaysians

Retirement security is also being addressed beyond EPF savings.
Under Budget 2026, the government allocated RM1.26 billion for senior citizen welfare, with the funding expected to benefit around 180,000 older Malaysians through assistance and activity centres.
Anwar also highlighted the need for a more comprehensive care system for Malaysia&rsquo;s ageing population, covering community support, nutritious meals and home assistance, as well as day care, home nursing and residential care for older people who are frail or living with dementia.
He said access to essential care should be based on need rather than solely on an individual&rsquo;s ability to pay.
What The Latest EPF Figures Mean
The increase from 36% to 39% of active formal-sector EPF members meeting their age-based Basic Savings benchmark shows some improvement in retirement preparedness.
However, the figures also underline the scale of the challenge ahead.
The government aims to increase the proportion to 60% by 2030, while the full Basic Savings benchmark gradually reaches RM390,000 at age 60.
For EPF members, the RIA framework provides a clearer reference point for assessing whether their savings are keeping pace with their age and expected retirement needs.
Ultimately, retirement planning is not just about reaching a particular savings figure. It is also about ensuring Malaysians have sufficient income, savings and social support to sustain themselves through what could be decades of retirement.
