Malaysians are being urged to register for MyDigital ID as soon as possible to avoid disruptions when accessing government digital platforms. The National Digital ID system will soon become the sole login method for two key applications: MyJPJ, managed by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and MyBayar PDRM, run by the Royal Malaysian Police.
At present, users of these apps can still log in using their existing credentials, such as usernames and passwords. However, this option will be phased out in the near future, and Malaysians will only be able to access services through MyDigital ID. While the government has not set a specific enforcement date, officials have indicated that the shift is imminent.
Functions of the MyJPJ and MyBayar PDRM Apps

The MyJPJ app enables drivers to manage a wide range of road transport services. These include viewing and renewing their driving licences (LMM) and motor vehicle licences (LKM), checking demerit points, confirming blacklist status, reviewing summonses, making payments, and even submitting complaints.
Meanwhile, MyBayar PDRM allows users to check and settle traffic summonses issued by the police. For non-Malaysians, the government has clarified that they will still be able to log in using existing methods rather than being required to register for MyDigital ID.
A Single, Safer Digital Identity

MyDigital ID was first introduced in 2016 as part of Malaysia&rsquo;s digital transformation strategy, designed to create a more secure and seamless online experience for citizens. The platform acts as a single sign-on (SSO) system, verifying a person&rsquo;s identity through the National Registration Department (JPN) database.
Importantly, MyDigital ID does not store personal data but instead uses encrypted verification processes to confirm identities. This ensures a more trustworthy environment for digital transactions while reducing the need for users to manage multiple usernames and passwords across different platforms.
According to Nik Hisham Nik Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of MyDigital ID, the initiative represents &ldquo;a new era of digital identity verification that is simpler, safer, and more transparent.&rdquo; He added that the platform is intended to provide maximum convenience while maintaining the highest levels of security, accelerating the country&rsquo;s digital transformation in an inclusive and resilient manner.
New Biometric Authentication Features

In line with global digital trends, MyDigital ID has recently rolled out biometric login support, allowing users to sign in using facial recognition (Face ID) or fingerprint authentication on their smartphones. This option makes the login process more efficient, particularly for frequent users, as it removes the need to manually key in passwords.
To enable this feature, users must activate it through the settings menu in the MyDigital ID app. They will first need to verify their MyDigital ID password before switching on biometric authentication.
Growing Integration Across Platforms
As of mid-2025, MyDigital ID has attracted over three million users and has already been integrated with more than 45 platforms across both the public and private sectors. Recent updates suggest that this number has since expanded to 82 digital systems, including at least 35 government platforms.
The long-term goal is to make MyDigital ID the standard authentication system across all digital government services, providing Malaysians with a consistent, secure, and unified experience.
Concerns and Public Reaction
Initially, the system was scheduled to become mandatory for MyJPJ logins at the end of last year. However, after public outcry over the lack of clarity and readiness, the Ministry of Transport delayed its enforcement.
Scepticism remains among some citizens, particularly around data privacy, security risks, and the need for yet another government-linked digital platform. In response, the government has emphasised that the system is designed with high-level encryption and does not permanently store sensitive personal data. To further strengthen confidence, the authorities are considering introducing new legislation that would regulate and oversee the digital ID system.
Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa recently highlighted that the current voluntary registration model limits adoption, and the government is exploring measures to make MyDigital ID compulsory for all Malaysians.
How to Register for MyDigital ID

Registering for MyDigital ID can be done in two main ways:
<ol>
<li>Via the MyDigital ID app &ndash; Available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Huawei AppGallery. Users must provide an email address, complete electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification, and set a secure password.</li>
<li>At physical kiosks &ndash; These kiosks are currently available at Tealive outlets, NADI centres, and Sentuhan Madani Kiosks nationwide. Users insert their MyKad, verify their thumbprint, and scan a QR code to save the digital token to their phone.</li>
</ol>
Each registered digital certificate is valid for one year and must be renewed within 90 days of expiry. Users will be reminded to update their credentials before the deadline.
Looking Ahead
As Malaysia continues its push towards a digitally-driven economy, MyDigital ID is expected to play a central role in how citizens interact with government and private sector services. While questions remain about security and mandatory adoption, the platform is positioned as a cornerstone of the nation&rsquo;s future digital ecosystem.
For now, Malaysians who have not yet registered are encouraged to do so promptly to avoid disruptions, especially once the single login system becomes fully enforced for MyJPJ and MyBayar PDRM.
