A Malaysian man, Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, 33, was brutally shot dead in front of his pregnant wife at their home in Kampung Bering, Sungai Golok, on the evening of 1 November. The horrifying attack took place around 6.40 pm local time, leaving the quiet Thai border village shaken.
Fuad had been installing a CCTV camera in his front yard when two men approached from behind and opened fire without warning. His wife, Wan Fatihah Mat Hussin, 35, who is expecting their first child next month, watched helplessly as her husband collapsed after being shot multiple times.

&ldquo;The killers came from behind and started shooting at him with their pistols. They didn&rsquo;t even give him a chance to run,&rdquo; she said tearfully. &ldquo;I screamed and ran to hold him, but they kept firing until their guns were empty before walking away.&rdquo;
Initial reports claimed Fuad was shot 18 times, while hospital and police findings later confirmed at least eight gunshot wounds to his neck, torso and chest. He was rushed to Sungai Golok Hospital but died around 9 pm, roughly three hours later.
Suspect Identified as Former Kelantan Goalkeeper

Following the attack, Thai and Malaysian authorities worked together to identify the main suspect, who was later confirmed to be a former professional footballer &mdash; a former goalkeeper for Kelantan FC.
According to Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, the 31-year-old suspect had played for Kelantan&rsquo;s President&rsquo;s Cup squad in 2014 before joining the senior team in 2019. He also represented Yala United FC and PT Prachuap FC in the Thai league.
&ldquo;This individual was a former goalkeeper with Kelantan and holds dual citizenship,&rdquo; said Datuk Yusoff. &ldquo;He has been identified as the main suspect in the murder case of the Malaysian man in Sungai Golok.&rdquo;
While initial speculation circulated online that he had been arrested, the Kelantan police chief clarified that no official report had yet been received from Thai authorities at that point. However, by the following day, Thai police confirmed a significant development.
Suspect Surrenders to Police

As of today, Thai authorities confirmed that the suspect Abdul Arif Abdullah, former Kelantan goalkeeper had turned himself in at the Sungai Golok Police Station.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspect surrendered voluntarily last night, bringing with him two pistols, believed to be the same weapons used in the fatal shooting.
&ldquo;The suspect came to the Sungai Golok Police Station last night and surrendered himself,&rdquo; said the spokesperson. &ldquo;He also handed over two firearms that are believed to have been used in the incident.&rdquo;
It was earlier reported that the suspect held dual Thai&ndash;Malaysian citizenship. Investigators are now verifying the weapons&rsquo; origins and conducting ballistic tests. &ldquo;We believe both pistols were used during the shooting,&rdquo; the spokesperson added.
Possible Motive and Ongoing Investigation

Thai police believe the shooting may have stemmed from a personal or financial dispute between the parties. However, they have not ruled out other motives. Preliminary findings also revealed that the victim and the suspects knew each other, lending weight to the theory that the attack was targeted rather than random.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff said the investigation remains under Thai jurisdiction, as the crime occurred on Thai soil. &ldquo;We are in contact with the Thai authorities and will assist if necessary,&rdquo; he said.
He further noted that Fuad had four previous drug-related offences in Malaysia between 2020 and 2023, though it remains unclear whether his past played any role in the murder.
Fuad had travelled to Sungai Golok earlier that day using a border pass, a routine practice for Malaysians living near Rantau Panjang, which shares a narrow river border with Thailand.
Family&rsquo;s Grief and Funeral

Fuad&rsquo;s 64-year-old mother, Zaiton Abdul Rahman, said she was devastated upon receiving news of her son&rsquo;s death. &ldquo;I received a call at 8 pm saying he&rsquo;d been shot, and another an hour later confirming he had passed away,&rdquo; she recalled.
She described her son as a hardworking man who ran a small online business selling second-hand goods with his wife. &ldquo;They were excited about becoming parents soon. We never imagined this would happen,&rdquo; she said tearfully.
Fuad was buried at the Kampung Apam Islamic Cemetery in Pasir Mas after Zohor prayers, attended by grieving relatives and neighbours. His widow, who is due to give birth next month, said she would stay with her mother-in-law for now. &ldquo;I still can&rsquo;t believe he&rsquo;s gone. I just hope those responsible are punished,&rdquo; she said softly.
Tightened Border Security
Following the shocking incident, the General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade has stepped up border patrols and roadblocks along the Malaysia&ndash;Thailand border. Both nations are now coordinating closely to ensure no accomplices escape and to maintain peace in the border region.
The Sungai Golok area has long been known for cross-border crime and smuggling, and this latest tragedy has once again highlighted the need for stronger security cooperation between the two countries.

The initiative, announced by Malaysia&rsquo;s banking industry in collaboration with Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet), means debit cardholders can enjoy unlimited free interbank cash withdrawals at more than 14,000 ATMs and SRMs nationwide.
No More RM1 Charge For Interbank Withdrawals

From 1 July onwards, that charge will be removed completely. Regardless of which participating bank issued the debit card, customers will be able to withdraw cash from any participating ATM or SRM across Malaysia without paying an additional fee.
The waiver applies to all ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines operated by banks nationwide, giving users greater flexibility to use whichever machine is most convenient.
Unlimited Free Withdrawals Across More Than 14,000 Machines
The new initiative will provide debit cardholders with unlimited fee-free withdrawals through a network of over 14,000 banking machines across the country.
This means consumers no longer need to search for their own bank&rsquo;s ATM simply to avoid paying extra charges. Whether they are travelling, working in another town or simply using the nearest available machine, they can access their money without worrying about additional costs.
