Malaysia&rsquo;s athletics scene has been shaken by a serious allegation: an 18-year-old rising sprinter was reportedly instructed to fake an injury and withdraw from the national 4x100m squad for the 2025 SEA Games. The athlete at the centre of the controversy, Danish Irfan Tamrin, had just returned from the ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Brunei with an impressive medal haul &mdash; silver in the 100m, gold in the 200m, and gold in the 4x100m relay.
His 10.61s in the 100m placed him among Malaysia&rsquo;s top four sprinters this season, effectively securing his position in the relay selection pool. Yet, within days of his ASG success, Danish discovered that he had been removed from the SEA Games shortlist altogether.
What followed was a rapid chain of events that has prompted his family to file a formal complaint supported by screenshots, medical documentation, and a detailed letter to Malaysia Athletics (MA).
WhatsApp Messages Reveal Alleged Pressure to Withdraw

According to Danish&rsquo;s parents, the ordeal began on 26 November, while their son was still in Brunei. WhatsApp messages from his coach allegedly instructed him to write a withdrawal letter citing &ldquo;back pain&rdquo;. The coach is seen dictating the letter line by line &mdash; from the heading to the injury excuse &mdash; prompting Danish to ask uncertainly, &ldquo;Write what, coach?&rdquo;
His mother, Noor Haslinda Mohd Zin, said this was the moment they realised something was deeply wrong: &ldquo;He was completely healthy. There was no back injury. He wrote what he was told because he feared the consequences of refusing.&rdquo;
Despite being in strong form and having fully participated at ASG, Danish complied with the instruction.
Medical Assessment Contradicts &lsquo;Injury&rsquo; Excuse

On 1 December, soon after returning to Malaysia, Danish underwent a full evaluation at the National Sports Institute (ISN). The report found him fit for competition, contradicting the supposed &ldquo;back injury&rdquo; stated in the withdrawal letter.
The family took the matter to MA immediately, but the appeal window for the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) had already closed. Danish still submitted an appeal on 3 December, attaching the ISN findings and explaining that the withdrawal letter was written under instruction from his coach &mdash; but OCM rejected it as &ldquo;out of time&rdquo;.
For the family, the timeline was damning:

<li>Danish was told to withdraw before any medical check;</li>
<li>he was allegedly told to appear injured during the ISN visit;</li>
<li>once the ISN officially cleared him, the appeal window had already shut.</li>

Parents Raise Fears of Blacklisting

On 6 December, Danish&rsquo;s parents met MA secretary-general Nurhayati Karim, who assured them that a transparent investigation would follow. However, that very night, the family was told by a third party that the coach had allegedly remarked Danish &ldquo;might be blacklisted by MA&rdquo; after the incident.
Alarmed, his father, Tamrin Hashim, submitted a formal &ldquo;Letter of Concern&rdquo; seeking confirmation on whether such a conversation took place and demanding written assurance that no retaliatory action would be taken against his son.
He also warned that the family was prepared to pursue legal routes if the matter was not addressed fairly.
MA Promises a Thorough, Transparent Inquiry
Malaysia Athletics later issued a statement confirming that investigations would be carried out &ldquo;transparently and comprehensively&rdquo;, emphasising that the welfare and rights of athletes are a priority and that any unprofessional behaviour would be escalated to the disciplinary committee.
MA also stated that every individual involved would be given the chance to provide clarification.
Head Coach Offers a Different Chronology

National head coach Mohd Manshahar Abdul Jalil has since stepped forward to clarify his understanding of the situation. He stressed that the decision on Danish&rsquo;s SEA Games status had to be made quickly due to the looming final registration deadline on 30 November.
Manshahar said he was not present in Brunei and could not confirm whether Danish was &ldquo;forced&rdquo; to write the letter. However, he suggested that the coach on-site may have acted after observing Danish competing with kinesiology tape on his back &mdash; commonly interpreted as a sign of injury.
He added that once the withdrawal letter reached MA on 27 November, a replacement had to be immediately confirmed. At that point, Khairul Hafiz Jantan was selected based on experience, performance consistency, and team chemistry.
Ironically, Khairul Hafiz later withdrew as well after ISN confirmed he was genuinely injured, leaving the relay team with no reserve runner.
Manshahar also confirmed that upon Danish&rsquo;s return to Malaysia, he instructed him to undergo the thorough ISN assessment on 1 December.
A Larger Debate: Are Coaches Too Powerful in Selection?

Beyond Danish&rsquo;s individual case, the controversy has reignited long-standing concerns regarding the extent of influence coaches hold over national selection decisions, particularly for young athletes.
The WhatsApp messages &mdash; if proven authentic &mdash; point to a coach directing an athlete to fabricate an injury in writing. That raises troubling questions about athlete welfare, administrative integrity, and basic fairness.
Several sports officials described the case as unprecedented, with one calling it &ldquo;a breach of trust at the heart of athlete management&rdquo;.
A Young Athlete Left Uncertain About His Future
Danish&rsquo;s parents say their son is now anxious and demoralised. &ldquo;He worked hard, he proved himself, and this is what he faces,&rdquo; said his mother. His father hopes MA will protect him rather than penalise him for speaking out.
As MA&rsquo;s investigation progresses, the decision that follows will determine more than Danish&rsquo;s future in competitive athletics &mdash; it will test whether Malaysia&rsquo;s selection system can genuinely safeguard its athletes and operate with integrity.
