Teach For Malaysia, a local education-interest group claimed the requirement for the trainee teachers should be stepped up 7As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) to increase the quality of teachers.
Prior to the Malaysian Education Blueprint, 70% of teachers entering the teacher training institute has zero to 3As in SPM.
Trustee of Teach For Malaysia, Chen Li-Kai said although academic results are not the best predictor for teaching quality, but it would be a great approach to improvise their requirement standards to ensure more quality educators are recruited.
Chen also urged that teaching profession should be transformed into a job of choice, not as a last option of survival.
He added with minimum 50% of the 400,000-odd teachers and assistants teaching for the next 20 years, there must be more efforts taken to improvise their teaching methods, in a G25 talk entitled ‘Reflections On The Malaysia Education Blueprint’
Chen said improving teaching quality and investing in the education system is very much important.
According to the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, the candidates selected for teachers’ training institutes are evaluated on a range of factors including attitude, aptitude for teaching, and personality.
The blueprint states that candidates must have at least three distinctions and three credits in SPM to be a trainee teacher pursuing an education degree.
However, based on the changes now, the ministry of education ensures to prioritize applicants with a minimum of seven distinctions, especially as teacher trainees with better results were inducted in 2012, prior to the blueprint being adopted.
