Covid-19, a novel pneumonia infection is now the greatest transmittable outbreak in Malaysia, consequently after the 1920&rsquo;s Spanish Flu and the 1998&rsquo;s Nipah Virus. Originated from Wuhan, China, the viral infection was declared as outbreak by the World Health Organization (WHO). Malaysia&rsquo;s pandemic progression evolved with time. With vaccines as the only way out from this, Malaysia is now a step closer to achieving herd immunity. The vaccine roll out in Malaysia began in February 2021 and has achieved almost 70% of fully immunised adult population, at present.
Responding to the surge capacity, the government has been relatively successful in the vaccine administration for public. Entertainment and other public facilities like shopping malls, event halls and ballrooms, university accommodations are being well-utilized in aiding the national immunization program. Malaysians are also cooperative in complying to the safety guidelines set by the government.

As Malaysia is renowned for its preparedness and response to the pandemic, we couldn&rsquo;t have made it to today without our beloved frontliners. With an array of medical experts executing the vaccination process, have you ever stopped a second to appreciate the voluntary groups of the immunization centres? Relying on sole medical teams might not have been the efficient way to get the whole population of the country to be immunised at a faster rate.
Presence of volunteers at the PPV centres have boosted the inoculation rate effectively. Runners, vaccinators, usherers, registration personnel, different profiles different jobs but one goal; &lsquo;Demi Malaysia&rsquo;. Unsung heroes, they are. Endorsed by the Youth and Sports Ministry of Malaysia, the Malaysia Vaccine Support Volunteers (MyVac) initiative had some 80,000 individuals registered for the volunteerism opportunity in March and of the total, 4,500 volunteers were assigned to 332 vaccination centres, nationwide. The MyVac initiative requires volunteers aged above 18 years and ones with good health. Meanwhile, individuals with medical background may be offered a healthcare volunteer position, subjected to the Annual Practicing Certificate (APC).

&ldquo;Only a life lived for others is worth living&rdquo;, says a famous quote. Well, that is volunteerism in a nutshell. PPV volunteers in Malaysia, remain a topic which is not much discussed by many. Team MYC! have decided to step forward to capture some valuable insights by our fellow vaccine volunteers, throughout Malaysia. Hafiza Othman, one bold beautiful lady who had shared her experience on how it felt to be a PPV volunteer, was one wholesome engagement we had.

The former staff of Malaysian Airlines told Team MYC! that she had a splendid experience being a PPV volunteer as she made new friends, met new people with various attitudes and background, spent her exciting days performing volunteerism at the Sendayan PPV centre.

Meanwhile, Sarfiza Othman addressed herself as Fiza, an independent property agent also talked about her days of being a PPV volunteer at UNIMAS. &ldquo;Driven by my own profession, providing services to the public, is why I chose to become a volunteer&rdquo;, said Fiza. Also being a staff of UNIMAS herself, Fiza was highly eligible to become a volunteer at the designated facility. Generally, PPV volunteers are divided into two categories, healthcare volunteers and non-healthcare volunteers. Most volunteers shall be assigned to carry out ushering tasks, registration errands, observing vaccinated individuals for a specified time.

However, that is just what we see on the surface. &ldquo;We have to work for long hours, spending most of the time standing and assisting the vaccination process&rdquo;, says Hafiza Othman during her days as a volunteer. She added that the voluntary work begins in the morning which that she shall report duty as early as 8 am.
Saying that volunteerism is also an elaborated version of public service, the volunteers at the PPV centres are highly opened to encounter various experiences. Lucky, if you&rsquo;ve got no harsh experience. Volunteers Sarfiza and Hafiza collectively extended their fortunate feeling on not facing crucial situations, throughout the volunteering process. &ldquo;I am fortunate to have no crisis-handling during the period but admitting that we will face all kinds of human behaviours, that is part of the challenges we have to deal with&rdquo;, Sarfiza quoted. Both ladies expressed their gratitude for being able to work in exciting places and guide through people in one of the most important events of their lives.

Notably, most of the volunteers at the PPV centres are from the youth community. With evolving responsibilities and commitments, these lads opted to shower love and kindness to the people through volunteerism. Servicing at UNIMAS over a decade, Sarfiza manages to swim against the tides where despite the challenges, with or without the pandemic, her goal is always to be kind, polite and exhibit compassion in her duties as a volunteer and a customer service officer. &ldquo;I love what I do&rdquo;, said Sarfiza.
On the other hand, the former staff of Malaysian Airlines (MAS), Hafiza Othman quoted that her love towards the people at the vaccination centres was also an application of her experience as an ex-flight crew. &ldquo;I treat the people I see at the inoculation centres just like my friends and family, based on my previous journey&rdquo;, Hafiza added. Patience is a virtue and flight attendants are one notable example serving love and kindness despite dealing with individuals from different walks of life.

Tied with abounding commitments and responsibilities, the volunteers steadily welcome the tasks with open arms. Earlier in June, a 22-year-old multimedia undergraduate regarded his volunteerism at the Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil vaccination centre as an invaluable experience. Renowned singer and actress Daiyan Trisha also spoke about her contribution as a PPV volunteer. She was grateful to lend a helping hand for a better future of Malaysia.

Hafiza Othman in her conversation with us also said that she has an overwhelming flow of chores but chose to spend her time in volunteerism as she was given a chance to channel her contribution for the betterment of her beloved nation. Former Miss Universe Malaysia Shweta Sekhon joined the bandwagon to appreciate the volunteers on their quick and smooth working mechanism. She even extended her heartfelt gratitude towards the police force and RELA (The People&rsquo;s Volunteer Corps) for uniting to combat the pandemic.

If we were to say that the love of Malaysians towards the nation is the silver lining in the dark clouds, it would be the right metaphorical expression. Despite the hit of Covid-19 pandemic and the current disrupted socio-political climate of Malaysia, it&rsquo;s the spirit of patriotism that the volunteers had demonstrated, contributing to the nation&rsquo;s &lsquo;wellbeing&rsquo;. Our beloved Hafiza and Sarfiza also explained the sacrifices of public/personal holidays they have made to participate in the voluntary works at the designated PPV centres.
The 37-year-old Hafiza share on her juggle with house chores, personal errands, and tasks at the vaccination centres. &ldquo;I think this is the time for me to give back to the country and of course it has a special place in my memory journal&rdquo;, Hafiza quoted. Meanwhile, being a workaholic by logic, Sarfiza also regards her workload as a hectic one. Together we stand strong for our motherland.

When we approached the volunteers to talk about how they spread kindness and love throughout their journey as a volunteer, everyone had similar notions to say. &ldquo;I treat people the way I want to be treated. So, I guess that is fair enough to explain why I choose to be kind&rdquo;, said Aiden, a 23-year-old nursing student. Elizabeth Tan, a pretty and young volunteer chose to spend her semester break with this noble deed.

Tan insisted to be kind to the vaccine recipients because she thinks it shall be one&rsquo;s essential quality, especially when you&rsquo;re a volunteer. She affirmed that people would be fearful and worried about the side effects of vaccines, thus as a volunteer, she believes kindness could uplift their emotions and distract them from the fright.
Designated at the IIUM PPV, Azliza Ain shared her thoughts on kindness in volunteerism too. She told MYC that, everyone deserves too be vaccinated according to the governmental policies, hence volunteers shall act out their duties with love and kindness regardless the recipients&rsquo; age, gender, financial status, language, educational background, etc. &ldquo;Kindness is universal, and everyone understands it&rdquo;, said Azliza.
Although volunteerism is a tiring task, our fellow volunteers enjoyed the process and even shared their unforgettable experiences with us. &ldquo;My unforgettable memory was probably meeting a recipient who wore a Micky Mouse mascot and hilariously some even attended the appointment with full PPE suit (Personal Protection Equipment)&rdquo;, said Tan about one of her entertaining days at the CIVac @ Panasonic Stadium Shah Alam.
Meanwhile, Aisyah, a PPV volunteer at the HCO-B, PPV Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, quoted that her experience as a volunteer was among the good days of her life. &ldquo;One of our small projects during the volunteerism period was crowd funding for vaccinees. There are these two weeks where the non-Malaysians came to get their vaccine and they had to queue since the night before. At times, when we arrive at the PPV centre, there would still be foreigners patiently waiting to get their jabs. Due to a longer wait, by the time they reach the vaccine station, some of them would be shaking or even pass out of tiredness and hunger. So, we chipped in some money among the volunteers, doctors, vaccinators to buy food for them&rdquo;, said Aisyah about her humane deed as a volunteer.
We think that these volunteers deserve applause for spreading love and kindness in all possible ways!
Recently, a video of a multilingual PPV volunteer had grabbed the attention of the netizens. She was praised for her extraordinary ability to converse in various languages to facilitate smooth interaction with the vaccine recipients at the centre. Even based on our personal experiences, most of us would have encountered polite and kind volunteers at the PPV centres. Reflecting well mannered body language and respectful communication skills.

It is a great gesture that Malaysia acquires a coordinated and comprehensive public health system to curb the pandemic spread. We are also very much closer to achieve herd immunity. Vaccination process soon would come to an end as most people are getting their jabs already. However, Malaysia shall undergo a transition in vaccination as the adolescence are now being prepped for their jabs. With much hope, may more volunteers jump into the task force to direct the nation towards 100% vaccinated population. In the meantime, don&rsquo;t you forget to spread love and kindness regardless of wherever you are, the world needs it more.

The overall concept of Karen&rsquo;s Diner is to be intentionally rude to their customers, however strict rules and regulations do exist and are applied at all branches. This includes &lsquo;no racism, no sexism, no homophobic comments, no body image comments, no ableist comments.&rsquo; Customers are also not allowed to make any form of sexual remarks toward the staff members nor physically touch them. &nbsp;
Anyone who breaks these rules will be forced to pay the bill, leave the venue and will be banned from returning to the restaurant in the future.

Do you want to know the bitter truth? Educations is expensive, especially the higher educations. People need a huge amount of money to be able to further their studies.
Some governments did step in to help the students with their studies. Countries like Germany and Norway are giving minimal to no cost on their higher educations. While countries like America and Malaysia build an organization that can provide loans for their higher education students.
But it is a loan, their financial concern is not permanently solved. They still have to pay it back after graduating, in full.
Therefore, Malaysia has taken the step to provide loan waiver to first class graduates.

This is definitely not a big news for Malaysians, as it has always been like that before, it&rsquo;s just that since 2019, the loan waiver has only been given to those from B40 (low-income) families.
Thus now, they are bringing it back following the amount of PTPTN fund that has been increased- governments have allocated RM3bil per year for PTPTN loan. Hence, an average of 180,000 new students will have the chance to further their study with this loan.

Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced during the launch of PTPTN&rsquo;s 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebrations:
"I wish to announce that the government will once again be giving the special waiver to any student with a PTPTN loan, and have a first-class honors degree, whereby they are allowed to change their loan to be exempted from repayment without taking into account their economic background, race or religion," he said.
He hopes this news will motivate more students to study hard and strive to be the top graduates and later be exempted from paying the PTPTN loan.
And yeah don't spend the money on something else...

Additional information on PTPTN
PTPTN is a fund established under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education with the aim of providing loans for eligible Malaysian students that want to fulfill their tertiary studies at some selected universities.
Graduates ought to start paying for the loan 6 months after their study. This amount of time was deemed enough for the graduates to prepare and plan on how they wanted to manage their financial responsibilities.
The loan supports almost all types of education like diploma, first degree, master, doctorate and many others.

In a nutshell, this reintroduction of loan waiver will definitely help motivate the students to focus more on their study.

Good News: PTPTN Loan Waiver Will Be Given To All Top Graduates

Over the past few days, we&rsquo;ve been hearing a lot of news about our Malaysian athletes over their performance at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. But let's take a look of what's happening here at our own home soil too.
Recently, national &ldquo;Pencak Silat&rdquo; athlete Merrywati Manuil had gained the spotlight on social media for winning the gold medal at the 19th World Pencak Silat Championship held in Air Keroh, Melaka.
She was also spotted wearing a hijab during the competition which caught the attention of many netizens.

You may ask yourself, what&rsquo;s the big deal about wearing a tudung during competitions? In fact, the 21-year-old from Keningau, Sabah practices Christianity and is from the Murut ethnic group.
She had explained that the hijab is not mandatory to be worn for Silat competitions. However, despite being a Sabahan Murut and a Christian, she explains that it was her choice to wear it on social media.

Normally when our national athletes are abroad for a competition, we Malaysians would give them full support no matter regardless if they bring back a medal.

Stadium Astro reported that during the mixed synchronised 10-metre platform finals, she and Jellson Jabillin had placed fourth and that they missed out on securing a medal.

That said local newspaper is Harian Metro and their tweet that was shared to their official Twitter page had caught the attention of many netizens.
&ldquo;National diving athlete Datuk Pandelela Rinong continues to disappoint the country when she failed for the third time in a row to secure any medals, including gold, at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.&rdquo; they wrote.
In fact, the newspaper even pointed out that Pandelela did not finish on the podium during multiple events such as the 10m platform individual and 10m platform synchro event prior to her finals with Jabillin.

Our diving queen had opened up stating that during her preparation for Birmingham 2022, her body recover process was slower than expected after returning from the <a href="https://myc.my/articles/1378/pandelela-bags-bronze-at-fina-world-championship-and-celebrates-it-in-the-most-malaysian-way-possible">Budapest World Championship</a> (where she had bagged a Bronze medal).
She also admitted that she struggled during the first day due to her not being 100% physically fit as she was trying to adapt to the local time zone. Despite it, she mentioned that she still had some great dives with Dhabitah Sabri and Jellson Jabllin during their mixed synchro. Pandelela also gave credit to Jellson who was still competing despite being injured.
She ended off the thread stating that she&rsquo;s thankful for the support that everyone had given her and that she&rsquo;s proud of the Malaysian diving team where the youngsters did well this time around.

The Housewife Social Safety Bill 2022 was passed by Dewan Negara yesterday. So, what is this bill about?&nbsp; What does it mean to housewives in Malaysia? What sort of victory that we can tell from the perspective of feminists in Malaysia ?
 I would like to unravel these questions one by one in case you didn't quite catch up with the progress of this event.

<h2>Explanation : Housewife Social Safety Bill 2022&nbsp;</h2>
By introducing the Housewife Social Safety Bill 2022, the Social Security Scheme (SKSSR) managed by the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso/ SOCSO) will be implemented:
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">The bill provides insurance for the housewives who register voluntarily to this programme, which includes disability benefits, medical coverage, constant attendance allowance, survivor's pension and funeral benefit.&nbsp;</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Compensations can only be applied when there&rsquo;s an occurrence of a disabling accident.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">As long as the housewives continue to pay for the programme, the event of divorce, the death of the husband and the failure of the husband to contribute due to different reasons such as the loss of income would not affect the coverage of the insurance fees&nbsp;</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">The husband or housewife will have to pay RM120 in advance to SOCSO to obtain 12 months of protection.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Single mothers or homemakers could also contribute if their husbands opt not to enrol into the programme with a payment as low as RM10 per month.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">The scheme will not charge the estimated numbers of 150,000 housewives living in poverty, who register under the government&rsquo;s i-Suri initiative.&nbsp;</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">The requirements for signing up the scheme: -A housewife, which is defined in the bill as any woman attending the household chores on a full- time or part time basis, regardless of one&rsquo;s marital status. -Below 55-years-old</li>

<h2>The Situations Of Housewives In Malaysia</h2>

Datuk Emeritus Prof Dr Norma, the Economics and Social Protection Expert in Universiti Malaya,&nbsp; pointed out that people who are not formally employed would not be covered by any form of social protection as Malaysia&rsquo;s social protection is offered according to one employment&rsquo;s status. Thus, the establishment of this bill can be perceived as a right direction to ensure the safety and health of women, especially those who suffer from poverty.
Here comes the difficult questions : To what extent does it benefit housewives? Does this signify a progress in the laws&rsquo; protection for women?&nbsp;
<h2>What Does The Future Hold For Women In Malaysia In Terms Of Policy Making?</h2>
In my opinion, the scheme is still conducted on a voluntary basis, which means that if the husband denies his wife any income and refuses to participate in it, the wife would not be able to access the given benefits.
However, Awang said that SOCSO will promote awareness campaigns like engagement sessions, road shows, Prihatin Squad activities, and its Social Synergy programme to endorse husbands to contribute to the SKSSR.&nbsp; Despite its lacking, it is still a step ahead on the long road of safeguarding women rights in Malaysia.&nbsp;
On a side note, the drafting of <a href="https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2022/07/08/time-for-a-menstrual-leave-policy-says-mp/">the menstrual leave policy </a>is still an ongoing debate in Malaysia. Without the implementation of such a law, a Sabah based company 'Brutti &amp; Besi' has granted its employees to take leave for period pain, becoming a pioneer in challenging the stigma of menstruation.&nbsp;

What Happened&nbsp;
Torrential rains had started earlier this August, causing massive floods and landslides in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi Province, the central Chungcheong and southwestern Jeolla Province.

President Yoon Suk Yeol immediately held an emergency meeting at the country&rsquo;s National Disaster and Safety Status Control Centre on Tuesday, adding the government should revamp its disaster management, taking &nbsp;into account the effects of climate change.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I urge authorities to implement all-out measures until the situation comes to an end, to protect the lives and property of the people,&rdquo; Yoon said. &ldquo;The torrential rain is believed to be from the abnormal weather caused by climate change, with the amount of rainfall per hour breaking the record high in the history of meteorological observation in our nation.&rdquo;

South Korea&rsquo;s Basement Apartments
If you have watched the Korean movie &lsquo;Parasite&rsquo;, you might recognize that this is a &lsquo;banjiha&rsquo;- a typical South Korean basement apartment, which is commonly preferred by youngsters as an inexpensive housing option, typically starting from 540,000 Won (~RM 1,838.36).

Many find living in these basement apartments to be quite sufficient and cosy, however when it comes to natural disasters, these types of houses are the first to be knocked down, or in this case, to be submerged under water, due to it being below ground level.
That is exactly what happened to the people who lived in this pink underground apartment, where two sisters in their 40s and one 13-year-old girl got trapped by water and had drowned to their death.&nbsp;
"I feel devastated about this tragedy, If I'd come home earlier perhaps, I could have saved them. I have a lot of regrets," said Sunwoo, the upstairs neighbour who had lived in the flat above the family for over 10 years.

The country currently remains on high alert, with the South Korean president ordering government officials to evacuate residents from high-risk areas, and urged business to grant employees to work from home.
Search and recovery efforts are still being made, and will continue for the upcoming week, as the country braces itself for an approaching typhoon, which will likely reach the peninsula sometime this week.

South Korea Hit By Its Worst Rain Storm In 80 Years!

When we say the word sex or bring up the topic of it, many Malaysians tend to find it pretty awkward. But this time around, times have change and many Malaysians are now opening up to the word to make it something more &ldquo;normal&rdquo;.
Durex Malaysia had recently conducted a Sexual health and Intimate Wellness Survey (&ldquo;Durex Survey&rdquo;) and it looks like Malaysian youth between the age of 18 and 30 are now more sexually active. The results of this were revealed during the launch of Durex #COMETOGETHER where they aim to encourage to more open conversations around sex.
Based off the insights of the Durex Survey, Durex is committed to helping Malaysian youths to reduce the gaps of sexual knowledge and equip the youth with accurate information and guide them in making a better and more informed decision around their sexual activities.
Durex Marketing director Tiffany Tang reveals that sexual health conversations among Malaysians youths are crucial towards the empowerment to make informed decisions. It&rsquo;s a known fact that the fear tactics that were implemented in the past no longer work.

&ldquo;With the #COMETOGETHER campaign, Durex is providing honest, age-appropriate information and skills necessary to help them take personal responsibility for their health and overall well-being&rdquo;
"It revealed that a large majority of them had their first sexual experience before the age of 22. Based on the survey, misconceptions about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and pregnancy are still prevalent,&rdquo; she said.
Marketing Manager of Durex Malaysia Jerome Goh had shared that the progression seen between the survey done in 2016 and in 2022 was an eye-opening result.
&ldquo;We are here to empower youth and we want them to know they have a say in making a decision and respecting themselves. As Malaysia I know in a new beginning, we would like to normalize the conversations by collaborating with higher education institutions with the help of Siti from SPOT Malaysia.&rdquo;
Here&rsquo;s some key findings of the survey:

&bull; 35.4 per cent of youths claimed to have had sexual intercourse compared to only 18.8 per cent in 2016. &bull; 62 per cent of youths had their first sexual experience at 22 years old or younger. The figure in 2016 was 42 per cent. &bull; 31 per cent believed the myth that a woman cannot get pregnant during her period, whereas 20 per cent were unsure. &bull; 31 per cent did not know if a woman could get pregnant the first time she engages in sex.

The panel discussion was hosted by Marketing Manager of Durex Malaysia, Jerome Goh along side SPOT Malaysia founder, Siti Aishah, UNFPA Programme Analysist, Tengku Aira Tengku Razif, Registered Counsellor and Sex Therapist, Chan Fun Shin and Content Creator &amp; Social Activist Arwind Kumar.
Many of the speakers agreed that vast information is available to the digital natives today and with it, it gives youths a more accessible and accurate portrayal around the topic of sex, intimacy and safety. 
When asked upon how can we approach in communicating adult sex education and protection steps in a country with a strong religious belief, both Siti Aishah and Tengku Aira had both given a great perspective towards this.

As the topic can be sensitive due to Malaysia being a country with leaders and a majority population with Muslims, the topic can be brought up by engaging stakeholders with a holistic approach. As mentioned by Tengku Aira, UNFPA has a standard guideline which is also supported by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and ensure that the topic doesn&rsquo;t go beyond their boundaries. &nbsp;
Siti Aishah also shared her experience approaching a very religious school where the principal is an Ustaz. Initially she talked about the topic to him not knowing what his reaction would be and to her surprise, the Ustaz responded and immediately asked on when they can start.
This brings it all down towards addressing the negative consequences of the topic as well as engaging the youth or even adults in a more human relations matter where everyone works together to communicate and address concerns properly.
