The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has confirmed that the academic service of Dr Solehah Yaacob ended on 27 April 2026, months after she drew public attention over several controversial claims about Malay history and civilisation.
The former Arabic language and linguistics academic has since said she plans to challenge the termination at the Industrial Court, claiming she was dismissed with only 24 hours&rsquo; notice and was not given an opportunity to appeal.
IIUM, meanwhile, has clarified that Solehah no longer holds any position at the university and is no longer authorised to represent or claim an affiliation with the institution.
Solehah To Challenge Termination In Industrial Court

Speaking to local media, Solehah described the university&rsquo;s handling of her termination as &ldquo;unprofessional&rdquo;.
She claimed she was dismissed within 24 hours and was not given the opportunity to appeal the decision. She also said IIUM had offered her compensation equivalent to six months&rsquo; salary, but she rejected the offer.
Solehah said she would instead take the matter to the Industrial Court to challenge the termination and have the circumstances surrounding her dismissal examined. She also questioned the timing of the decision, saying that she had received a Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) commendation from the Higher Education Ministry just one day before her dismissal.
MyRA, introduced in 2006, is used to assess the research performance and capabilities of universities in Malaysia.
IIUM Confirms Service Ended In April

In a statement, IIUM&rsquo;s Office for Communication, Advocacy and Promotion clarified that Solehah&rsquo;s service as an academic staff member officially ended on 27 April 2026.
The university did not publicly disclose the reason for ending her service.
However, IIUM stressed that Solehah is no longer a professor at the institution and does not represent the university in any official capacity.
The university also said she is no longer permitted to use titles, positions, departments, centres or other affiliations associated with IIUM in media reports, publications, advertisements, promotional materials or social media content.
IIUM said the clarification was necessary to avoid confusion over Solehah&rsquo;s status and to protect the university&rsquo;s academic standing and institutional integrity.
Her Controversial Historical Claims

Solehah, who holds a doctorate in Arabic linguistics, became widely known online after making several controversial claims about Malay civilisation and ancient history.
One of her most widely discussed claims was that ancient Romans learned shipbuilding techniques from Malay seafarers. The claim attracted widespread criticism and debate, particularly among historians and academics, with some questioning the evidence behind the theory.
She later continued to attract attention with other historical theories, including a suggestion that the abundance of iron ore in ancient Kedah could have been linked to meteor showers or extraterrestrial impacts.
Other claims attributed to her have included theories about ancient Malay civilisation and its influence on other cultures. IIUM had previously stressed that such views did not represent the university&rsquo;s official position.
Internal Inquiry Was Previously Reported

Reports have also stated that IIUM previously established an internal inquiry panel to examine Solehah&rsquo;s claims regarding the Roman shipbuilding theory and related academic issues.
According to Solehah&rsquo;s own account reported in local media, she did not attend some of the inquiry meetings, citing hospitalisation and medical leave for earlier meetings.
She reportedly said she later requested that another meeting be rescheduled due to commitments that had already been arranged. The details surrounding the internal inquiry and whether it was connected to her eventual termination have not been fully disclosed by IIUM.
With Solehah now planning to take the matter to the Industrial Court, questions surrounding the termination process could potentially be examined through the legal proceedings.
Her Claims Have Sparked A Wider Debate

What Happens Next?
The immediate focus is now on Solehah&rsquo;s planned Industrial Court challenge.
For IIUM, the university has made clear that her academic relationship with the institution ended in April and that she no longer has the right to present herself as an IIUM professor or representative.

Eight people, including a motorsports influencer, have been remanded for four days over an alleged illegal motorcycle race that saw traffic stopped on the Linkedua Expressway in Johor.
The case began after a 33-second video went viral on social media, showing several individuals allegedly blocking vehicles on the expressway to clear the road for two motorcycles to race. Firecrackers were also reportedly set off after the race.
The incident has since sparked widespread criticism over the danger posed to other road users.

The incident is believed to have taken place on 22 August 2026, at around 7am, along the stretch between KM33 near the Senai Utara toll interchange and KM31 near the Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) interchange.
In the viral footage, several individuals could be seen standing on the expressway and apparently stopping traffic. Other people appeared to be gathered along the roadside, seemingly watching the race.
Two motorcycles were then seen speeding along the road while other motorists remained stopped. The motorcycles&rsquo; registration numbers and models could not be clearly identified from the video. Towards the end of the footage, the group was also seen setting off firecrackers to celebrate after the race.
The video drew heavy criticism online, with many questioning how anyone could justify shutting down a public expressway for an illegal race and potentially putting motorists and spectators at risk.
Eight People Arrested

Following the circulation of the video, police launched an investigation to identify the motorcyclists and other individuals believed to have been involved.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said eight suspects, aged between 26 and 45, were arrested at around 11.54am on 23 August by officers from the Kulai Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.
The suspects were later brought before the Kulai Magistrates&rsquo; Court on 24 August, where they were remanded for four days to assist investigations. Among those arrested was reportedly a motorsports influencer who was allegedly seen at the scene after the race.
All eight suspects reportedly tested negative for drugs.
Police are also continuing efforts to identify other individuals who may have been present, including those who allegedly helped stop traffic or watched the race from the roadside.
Police Investigating Under Road Transport Act

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless and dangerous driving.
Police are also working with highway operator PLUS Malaysia Berhad to obtain CCTV recordings from the area. Investigators hope the footage will help establish what happened before, during and after the alleged race, as well as identify the motorcycles involved.
Police have also said that at least one individual believed to have been at the scene had already been identified during the early stages of the investigation. Members of the public with relevant information have been urged to assist police with the investigation.
Illegal Racing Poses Risks To Other Road Users

Stricter Penalties For Illegal Racing

The case also comes as Malaysia moves towards tougher penalties for illegal racing under recent amendments to the Road Transport Act.

Under the new provisions, first-time offenders can face fines between RM2,000 and RM10,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both. Repeat offenders could face fines of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
The changes are intended to give authorities stronger powers to intervene in illegal racing activities before they result in crashes, injuries or fatalities.
Investigation Is Still Ongoing
For now, the eight suspects remain under remand as police continue investigating the viral video and identifying everyone allegedly involved.
Authorities are also working to establish the full sequence of events, including who organised the race, who participated and who helped block traffic.
The case serves as another reminder that public roads and expressways are not racing tracks, and actions that temporarily stop traffic for illegal races can put not only the riders but innocent motorists and pedestrians at serious risk.

The move is intended to make travelling easier for those attending Ambang Merdeka celebrations on the night of 30 August, as well as the National Day celebrations in Putrajaya on the morning of 31 August.
With large crowds expected, commuters may experience busier stations and longer queues at major interchanges, particularly around areas connected to the celebrations.
103 Free Shuttle Buses To Putrajaya

The MS02 route will connect the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) with Jalan Tun Hussein, Precinct 3.

Rapid KL said the free shuttle services are designed to improve access to the celebration areas while reducing dependence on private vehicles and helping to ease traffic congestion around Putrajaya.

Rapid KL To Run Selected Trains And Buses 24 Hours On 30 & 31 August

Selangor could have another reason to celebrate if the state finishes as the overall champion of SUKMA Selangor 2026, with the state government considering a special holiday for residents should the host contingent clinch the title.
Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the proposal would be brought to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for consideration once the final medal tally is confirmed.
However, the holiday has not been officially declared.
Selangor Still Has To Secure The Overall Title

Despite holding a strong lead, Najwan urged Selangor&rsquo;s athletes not to become complacent with the Games entering its final stretch.
Selangor had already collected 85 gold medals by 2.50pm on 23 August, with recent wins coming from events including women&rsquo;s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports, women&rsquo;s 3m springboard diving, women&rsquo;s singles table tennis and men&rsquo;s singles lawn bowls.
The hosts later increased their tally to 97 gold, 71 silver and 69 bronze medals, putting them firmly ahead in the overall standings.
Najwan nevertheless warned that the competition was not over, with a number of gold medals still available before the Games officially conclude.
&ldquo;We cannot be overly confident. We are on track, but our athletes must remain focused,&rdquo; he said.
Selangor Has Already Surpassed Its 80-Gold Target

The state has already exceeded its original target of 80 gold medals, reaching the milestone after Selangor&rsquo;s women&rsquo;s MLBB team defeated Penang 3-1 in the final.
The achievement is particularly significant because the last time Selangor reached 80 gold medals was when it hosted SUKMA in 1998.
That year, Selangor also emerged as the overall champion on home soil.
Najwan said the state now hopes to repeat that achievement with an even higher gold medal tally.
Special Holiday Has Not Been Confirmed

While talk of a holiday has generated excitement among Selangor residents, Amirudin has warned the public against believing unofficial announcements circulating online.
A fake poster claiming that Selangor had already declared a special holiday following its SUKMA performance was circulated on social media. Amirudin clarified that any official announcement would only be made during the SUKMA closing ceremony on 24 August at Aneka Walk, Section 14.
He stressed that any announcements made before the official ceremony were false and urged residents to wait for confirmation from the state government. As such, Monday, 24 August remains a working day in Selangor unless an official announcement is made.
Athletes To Receive Incentives After SUKMA

The proposed holiday would be an incentive for residents, while medal-winning athletes are also expected to receive special incentives after SUKMA concludes.

SUKMA Selangor 2026 began on 15 August and will officially conclude on 24 August, with the closing ceremony expected to be attended by Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Amirudin.
Para SUKMA To Follow In September

The sporting action in Selangor will continue after SUKMA, with the state set to host the Para SUKMA Games from 5 to 14 September 2026.
For now, Selangor remains in a strong position to claim the overall SUKMA title. Residents will have to wait until the final medal tally and closing ceremony to find out whether the state will celebrate the victory with an extra day off.

Heading to MPL Malaysia S18 and looking for something fun to do between matches? Make your way to the AXE Booth at Level 6, Quill City Mall and take part in a range of interactive activities, challenges and photo opportunities while you&rsquo;re there!
The AXE booth will be open from 10am to 11pm on selected dates throughout August, September and October, giving MPL fans plenty of chances to drop by, join the activities and walk away with an AXE Mini Bottle.
