Frequent travellers have something new to celebrate. Malaysia has officially introduced a 10-year passport validity option, marking one of the most significant changes to the country's passport system in decades.
The new passport category comes into effect following the implementation of the Fees (Passports and Visas) (Amendment) Order 2026, which was gazetted on 3 June. Previously, Malaysian international passports were generally issued with a maximum validity period of five years.
The move brings Malaysia more in line with several neighbouring countries that already offer passports with longer validity periods, while reducing the need for Malaysians to renew their travel documents as frequently.
What Will The New 10-Year Passport Cost?

Under the new fee structure, Malaysians aged between 18 and 59 can obtain a 10-year passport for RM350.
Senior citizens aged 60 and above will only pay RM175, while registered Persons with Disabilities (OKU) holding a valid Kad OKU will continue to enjoy passport fee exemptions.
The same exemption also applies to officers and staff of the Immigration Department.

For comparison, the previous five-year passport costs RM200 for most adults and RM100 for senior citizens.
Although the new passport is 75% more expensive upfront, it offers double the validity period, potentially making it more cost-effective in the long run for regular travellers.
What About Children, Students And Hajj Pilgrims?

One notable detail in the amendment is that there is currently no dedicated 10-year passport category for children aged 12 and below, students studying overseas, or Hajj pilgrims.
These groups continue to fall under the existing five-year passport structure.
The amendment also appears to tighten eligibility requirements for overseas students. Previously, concessions applied broadly to students studying abroad. Under the updated wording, the regulations now specifically refer to students who are "studying for a degree programme abroad".
This means students enrolled in degree programmes overseas may still qualify for existing student concessions under the five-year passport category, while those undertaking other forms of study may no longer be eligible.
Losing Your Passport Could Become Very Expensive

While the new passport offers greater convenience, losing or damaging it could prove costly.
The government has introduced a new replacement fee structure for lost or damaged 10-year passports, with charges increasing significantly for repeat replacements.

The higher charges are likely intended to discourage repeated losses while encouraging passport holders to take extra care of a document that will now remain valid for a decade.
When Can Malaysians Apply?

While the amendment has officially come into force, there is still some uncertainty regarding the rollout process.
At the time of writing, the Immigration Department has yet to provide detailed information on how applications for the new 10-year passport will be handled. Its official website was still displaying information relating to the current five-year passport system.
As such, Malaysians may need to wait for further announcements from the Immigration Department regarding application procedures, availability and implementation timelines.
A Major Change For Malaysian Travellers
The introduction of a 10-year passport represents a significant upgrade for Malaysian travellers, particularly those who travel regularly for work, study or leisure.
With fewer renewals required and a validity period that now stretches across an entire decade, the new passport offers greater convenience and potentially lower long-term costs. However, the substantially higher replacement fees also serve as a reminder that safeguarding the document will be more important than ever.
