The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has voted to remain in Malaysia&rsquo;s Unity Government, with an overwhelming majority of delegates backing the party&rsquo;s continued participation in the federal administration until the end of the current parliamentary term.
The decision was made through a secret ballot at DAP&rsquo;s National Conference in Putrajaya on Sunday (16 August), following growing debate over the government&rsquo;s pace of reforms and the party&rsquo;s recent electoral setbacks.
Of the 2,106 delegates who cast their ballots, 1,857 voted for DAP to remain in the government, while 242 voted for the party to leave. Seven ballots were spoiled.
The result means DAP&rsquo;s ministers and deputy ministers will continue serving in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim&rsquo;s Cabinet.

DAP congress chairman Cha Kee Chin announced that 1,857 delegates, or 88.2% of valid votes, supported the motion for the party to remain in the federal government.
A total of 2,223 central delegates attended the conference, representing 52.1% of the 4,264 delegates eligible to attend. Of those present, 2,106 took part in the secret ballot.
While turnout was just over half of eligible delegates, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke defended the figure, saying it was considered relatively high for a party congress without an election.
He noted that many delegates are small business owners, hawkers and traders who may have needed to return to their businesses over the weekend.
Loke also said the party would respect those who voted against remaining in government, but would ultimately follow the decision of the majority.
DAP To Continue Pushing For Reforms

Following the vote, Loke said the result provided a clear mandate for DAP&rsquo;s Central Executive Committee and its representatives in government to continue serving and pursuing the party&rsquo;s reform agenda.
He said DAP would continue working to fulfil commitments made under the Pakatan Harapan manifesto while pushing for reforms at Cabinet level.
Among the reforms highlighted by Loke were the proposed separation of the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, a two-term limit for the Prime Minister and efforts to strengthen the fight against corruption.
Loke stressed that these reforms should not be viewed solely as DAP initiatives, arguing that they were commitments jointly agreed upon within Pakatan Harapan and the Unity Government.
He also pointed to the implementation of e-invoicing as an example of a reform that had received support within the government.
Delegates Raised Concerns Over Slow Reforms

The decision to remain in government came after a debate in which delegates openly discussed concerns over the administration&rsquo;s performance and the pace at which promised reforms have been implemented.
Representatives from all 14 states spoke during the debate, with several highlighting concerns about government policies, accountability and DAP&rsquo;s relationship with its coalition partners.
Despite those concerns, all 14 state representatives supported DAP remaining in the Unity Government.
However, delegates also urged the party leadership to become more assertive in pushing for reforms during the remainder of the parliamentary term. Some argued that leaving the government would limit DAP&rsquo;s ability to influence policy, while others warned that withdrawing could create greater political uncertainty.
Sarawak DAP delegate Soo Tien Ren, for example, described leaving the government at this stage as &ldquo;political suicide&rdquo; and argued that DAP should use its position in Putrajaya to push for further changes.
Other delegates called for issues such as equal allocations for all MPs and the abolition of the Sedition Act to be addressed.
Why DAP Chose To Stay With The Unity Government

Loke acknowledged that working with Umno and other coalition partners was not always easy, but said maintaining political stability was essential for the government to continue implementing its policies.
He said DAP understood the political reality of working alongside Umno within the Unity Government and did not want to create further instability.
&ldquo;We do not want to create instability in the government,&rdquo; Loke said, adding that delegates understood the need for cooperation between parties with different political backgrounds.
The decision also provides a degree of political relief for Anwar&rsquo;s administration. A DAP withdrawal from the Cabinet could have increased pressure on the Unity Government and potentially raised questions about its stability and the possibility of an early general election.
DAP is currently represented in Cabinet by five full ministers and seven deputy ministers.
Decision Follows Recent Electoral Setbacks

The vote came after a difficult period for DAP and Pakatan Harapan, with the party suffering a series of electoral setbacks in recent state elections.
DAP lost all eight seats it contested in the Sabah state election last year. It subsequently experienced further losses in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.
Loke himself suffered a notable defeat in Chennah, Negeri Sembilan, losing the seat he had held for three terms to MCA by 688 votes.
During his keynote address at the conference, Loke apologised to party delegates over the defeat but said the result should not cause DAP to abandon its goal of becoming a truly multiracial party.
DAP Vows To Remain A Multiracial Party

Loke said DAP must acknowledge the challenges it faces, particularly in breaking through racial barriers and gaining wider support across Malaysia&rsquo;s different communities.
He maintained that DAP had never adopted a position hostile towards any particular community throughout its 60-year history.
The party secretary-general said recent electoral defeats should instead motivate DAP to improve its engagement with voters and strengthen its multiracial agenda.
He also stressed that DAP must take public dissatisfaction seriously, particularly over reforms that have yet to materialise.
DAP Will Continue Working With Umno
With the decision now settled, DAP is expected to continue working with Umno and other parties within the Unity Government for the remainder of the current parliamentary term.
Loke acknowledged the differences between the parties but said political cooperation remained necessary to maintain stability and allow the government to deliver its policies.
Prime Minister Anwar has also reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining strong working relationships with coalition partners, including Umno president and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
For DAP, the vote effectively keeps the status quo in place: the party will remain in Putrajaya while continuing to push the government to deliver on its promised reforms.
With the next general election required to be held before February 2028, DAP&rsquo;s decision gives the Unity Government more room to continue its administration, while placing renewed pressure on the party&rsquo;s leadership to turn its reform promises into tangible results.
