Selangor could have another reason to celebrate if the state finishes as the overall champion of SUKMA Selangor 2026, with the state government considering a special holiday for residents should the host contingent clinch the title.
Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the proposal would be brought to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for consideration once the final medal tally is confirmed.
However, the holiday has not been officially declared.
Selangor Still Has To Secure The Overall Title

Despite holding a strong lead, Najwan urged Selangor&rsquo;s athletes not to become complacent with the Games entering its final stretch.
Selangor had already collected 85 gold medals by 2.50pm on 23 August, with recent wins coming from events including women&rsquo;s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports, women&rsquo;s 3m springboard diving, women&rsquo;s singles table tennis and men&rsquo;s singles lawn bowls.
The hosts later increased their tally to 97 gold, 71 silver and 69 bronze medals, putting them firmly ahead in the overall standings.
Najwan nevertheless warned that the competition was not over, with a number of gold medals still available before the Games officially conclude.
&ldquo;We cannot be overly confident. We are on track, but our athletes must remain focused,&rdquo; he said.
Selangor Has Already Surpassed Its 80-Gold Target

The state has already exceeded its original target of 80 gold medals, reaching the milestone after Selangor&rsquo;s women&rsquo;s MLBB team defeated Penang 3-1 in the final.
The achievement is particularly significant because the last time Selangor reached 80 gold medals was when it hosted SUKMA in 1998.
That year, Selangor also emerged as the overall champion on home soil.
Najwan said the state now hopes to repeat that achievement with an even higher gold medal tally.
Special Holiday Has Not Been Confirmed

While talk of a holiday has generated excitement among Selangor residents, Amirudin has warned the public against believing unofficial announcements circulating online.
A fake poster claiming that Selangor had already declared a special holiday following its SUKMA performance was circulated on social media. Amirudin clarified that any official announcement would only be made during the SUKMA closing ceremony on 24 August at Aneka Walk, Section 14.
He stressed that any announcements made before the official ceremony were false and urged residents to wait for confirmation from the state government. As such, Monday, 24 August remains a working day in Selangor unless an official announcement is made.
Athletes To Receive Incentives After SUKMA

The proposed holiday would be an incentive for residents, while medal-winning athletes are also expected to receive special incentives after SUKMA concludes.
Najwan said arrangements for the athletes&rsquo; rewards would be carried out following the end of the Games.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 began on 15 August and will officially conclude on 24 August, with the closing ceremony expected to be attended by Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Amirudin.
Para SUKMA To Follow In September

One major change is a simpler sign-up process. Overseas users will reportedly no longer need to provide identity documents such as a passport to register.
New users only need to provide their date of birth for age-based content recommendations and can browse videos as guests. However, those who want to upload content and access creator tools will still need an account. Bilibili says the international platform will offer the same core content as its Chinese platform, with localisation improvements and additional features planned.

Football Fans Launch Global Petition Calling For Gianni Infantino To Resign

The legal proceedings surrounding the death of Rocky, a dog that died during a stray dog-catching operation in Port Klang last month, have taken a new turn after two people were charged with animal cruelty.
Muhammad Shah Idham Nor Haikal Shaharom, 24, and S. Roghini Devi, 42, separately pleaded not guilty in the Klang Sessions Court on 20 August over allegations that their actions caused unnecessary pain or suffering to the male dog.
The case has attracted widespread public attention since footage of the incident went viral, sparking debates over animal welfare, stray dog management and the treatment of those involved.
What Are The Charges Against Them?

According to the charges, Shah is accused of unreasonably restraining Rocky using a looped rope around the dog's neck, allegedly causing pain to the animal.
Roghini, who is said to be Rocky's owner, is separately accused of unreasonably pulling the dog, also allegedly causing pain or suffering. Both charges relate to an incident between 11pm and 11.30pm on 29 July outside a house along Jalan Sama Gagah 20, Taman Telok Gedung Indah, Klang.
They were charged under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015. If convicted, the offence carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
Both accused have pleaded not guilty and are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Bail Set At RM6,000 Each

During the court proceedings, the prosecution initially requested RM20,000 bail for each accused, together with conditions including passport surrender and monthly reporting to the Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

Shah's lawyer, Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, argued that his client was not a flight risk and that bail should not effectively become punishment before conviction. Roghini's lawyer, Jeremy Vinesh Anthony, also requested lower bail, highlighting that she is a mother of four and supports her family.
The court eventually fixed bail at RM6,000 each, with one surety, and ordered both accused to report to the Selangor DVS once a month.
The case has been fixed for mention on 8 October 2026.
Roghini Also Faces A Separate Dog Licensing Charge

Roghini is also facing a separate charge at the Magistrate's Court for allegedly keeping Rocky without a valid dog licence.

If convicted, she could face a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both. The Magistrate's Court granted her RM1,000 bail for this separate charge, with the matter also fixed for mention on 8 October.
Rocky&rsquo;s Death Sparked Public Outrage

The case began after Rocky died during a dog-catching operation conducted in Taman Telok Gedong Indah on 29 July.
The operation was reportedly carried out following complaints from residents about stray dogs in the area and concerns over public safety. The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) said the operation involved its personnel, a veterinary officer and around 50 local residents. A total of 12 dogs were reportedly captured during the operation.
According to the council, the situation became chaotic when an individual intervened during Rocky's capture, resulting in a struggle while the loop was still around the dog's neck.
Rocky subsequently died during the incident. However, his owner has given a different account of what happened.
Rocky&rsquo;s Owner And Shah Give Different Accounts

Roghini previously claimed that she returned home to find Rocky restrained by a snare around his neck and alleged that she repeatedly pleaded for the dog to be released.
She said she tried to intervene and that her child also attempted to cut the rope. Shah, meanwhile, has denied intending to hurt or kill Rocky. He previously said he was at the scene as a volunteer and community representative, helping with the MBDK operation after being invited by the local Rukun Tetangga.
His lawyer has maintained that participants were briefed on the dog-catching procedure and that the loop used during the operation was supplied by MBDK. Rafique has also argued that the incident became chaotic after Rocky's owner intervened, leading to a tug-of-war over the dog.
With the accounts differing significantly, the court proceedings will be closely watched as investigators and prosecutors work to establish exactly what happened.
Lawyer Calls For Apologies Over &lsquo;Dog Killer&rsquo; Claims

Penang's trap-neuter-release or rehoming approach has been highlighted as one example of a more structured system, while other local authorities have also begun exploring sterilisation and rehoming programmes.
The debate has also raised concerns over whether untrained members of the public should participate in municipal animal-catching operations.
For now, the focus remains on the court case and determining what happened to Rocky on the night he died. But the controversy has also become part of a much broader conversation about animal welfare, public safety and the need for a more humane and coordinated approach to Malaysia's stray dog problem.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim&rsquo;s recent comments on Taiwan have sparked a diplomatic backlash, with China praising his position while Taiwan warned that the remarks could affect confidence among Taiwanese businesses investing in Malaysia.
The controversy followed an Al Jazeera interview released on 17 August, in which Anwar said he viewed Taiwan as part of China and appeared to support Beijing&rsquo;s right to use force to preserve territorial unity.
The comments have since placed Malaysia&rsquo;s long-standing One China policy under renewed scrutiny, while raising questions over whether the diplomatic fallout could affect Malaysia&rsquo;s growing semiconductor and technology ties with Taiwan.
What Did Anwar Say About Taiwan?

During the interview, Anwar was asked about Taiwan&rsquo;s position and China&rsquo;s refusal to rule out military force if efforts to achieve reunification peacefully fail.
Anwar responded:
&ldquo;I see Taiwan as part of China, period.&rdquo;
He added that the issue should be understood within the context of the One China policy, saying it was an accepted position. When asked whether he would condemn China if it used force against Taiwan, Anwar drew a comparison with Malaysia.
He argued that if one of Malaysia&rsquo;s states attempted to break away, the government would have a responsibility to protect the country&rsquo;s territorial integrity. When pressed on whether force could be used in such a situation, he answered yes.
That comparison, particularly his apparent acceptance of the possible use of force, was what triggered the strongest reaction from Taiwan.
Malaysia Has Followed The One China Policy For Decades

Anwar has since defended his remarks by stressing that Malaysia&rsquo;s position is not new.
He said Malaysia has followed the One China policy since the administration of its second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, and that the policy remains unchanged.
Anwar also stressed that Malaysia prefers a peaceful resolution to tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
&ldquo;The One China policy dates back to Tun Abdul Razak. In my view, the policy remains. We practise it and, of course, we seek a peaceful solution,&rdquo; he said on 20 August.
However, the wording used by Anwar has attracted attention because it appeared to go further than simply acknowledging Beijing&rsquo;s position by seemingly justifying the use of force to maintain territorial unity.
China Praises Anwar&rsquo;s Position

Beijing welcomed Anwar&rsquo;s remarks.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China appreciated the Prime Minister&rsquo;s comments and reiterated Beijing&rsquo;s position that there is only one China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.
China also said it looked forward to continuing cooperation with Malaysia and ASEAN.
The response comes as Malaysia continues to deepen its economic relationship with China, its largest trading partner, while attempting to maintain a pragmatic foreign policy amid growing US-China tensions.
Taiwan Strongly Rejects Anwar&rsquo;s Comments

Taiwan, meanwhile, took a very different position.
Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised Anwar&rsquo;s remarks and rejected the suggestion that Taiwan is subordinate to China. Taipei said comments appearing to support unilateral attempts to change the status quo through force could damage political trust between Taiwan and Malaysia.
It also questioned how Anwar&rsquo;s position aligned with his long-standing image as a supporter of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, arguing that the wishes of Taiwan&rsquo;s people should also be respected.
Most significantly for Malaysia, Taiwan warned that Anwar&rsquo;s &ldquo;one-sided support&rdquo; for China could negatively affect the confidence of Taiwanese businesses investing in Malaysia.
Could Taiwan&rsquo;s Investment In Malaysia Be Affected?

Taiwan is an important economic partner for Malaysia, particularly in the electronics and semiconductor industries.
The Taiwan Chamber of Commerce &amp; Industry in Malaysia has expressed concern that political statements about Taiwan&rsquo;s status could influence future investment decisions. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Taiwan was reported at RM147.75 billion in the first half of 2026, while Taiwanese manufacturing investment in Malaysia reached around RM3.71 billion across 45 projects in 2025.
Taiwanese companies are particularly important to Malaysia&rsquo;s semiconductor ambitions, with firms involved in areas such as wafer manufacturing, electronics packaging and testing. However, this does not necessarily mean Taiwanese companies will immediately pull out of Malaysia.
Investors are also likely to consider commercial factors, including Malaysia&rsquo;s established electronics and semiconductor ecosystem. The greater concern could be whether the remarks affect future investment decisions, expansion plans and investor confidence.
Cabinet Did Not Discuss The Remarks

Despite the diplomatic reaction, Communications Minister and government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet did not discuss Anwar&rsquo;s Taiwan remarks during its latest meeting.
&ldquo;It was not discussed,&rdquo; Fahmi said when asked about Taiwan&rsquo;s response.
There has therefore been no indication so far of any change to Malaysia&rsquo;s official policy following the controversy.
Anwar Says Malaysia&rsquo;s Position Has Not Changed
Anwar has continued to stand by his position while insisting that Malaysia remains committed to a peaceful approach.
He argued that his comments were consistent with Malaysia&rsquo;s existing One China policy and suggested that the way the issue was framed during the Al Jazeera interview may have contributed to the backlash.
He also compared the situation to historical examples involving territorial unity, saying Malaysia had a responsibility to protect its own sovereignty and territorial integrity.
For now, Malaysia appears to be maintaining its long-established diplomatic position while trying to avoid being drawn further into the increasingly tense rivalry between China and Taiwan.
The bigger question is whether the controversy will remain at the diplomatic level or begin to affect Malaysia&rsquo;s economic relationship with Taiwanese investors, particularly as the country seeks to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
