Malaysia is facing another difficult stretch of haze, with several areas recording unhealthy air quality as smoke and pollutants continue to affect parts of the country. The situation is unfolding alongside a major volcanic eruption in neighbouring Indonesia, where Mount Anak Krakatau has disrupted flights and daily life after volcanic ash spread across parts of Java and Sumatra.
The worsening regional conditions have also prompted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to express solidarity with Indonesia, highlighting the close ties between the two neighbouring countries as they deal with the impact of the volcanic activity and haze.
Haze Continues To Affect Parts Of Malaysia

The haze situation remains a concern in Malaysia, particularly in parts of Selangor and Sarawak. In Selangor, recent Air Pollutant Index (API) readings reached unhealthy levels in areas including Johan Setia, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Klang, Banting and Kuala Selangor.
Under existing guidelines, an API reading between 101 and 200 is considered unhealthy, while readings above 200 indicate very unhealthy conditions.
The situation has already begun affecting daily activities. Several sporting events in Malaysia have been cancelled or postponed due to poor air quality, while authorities have warned people to reduce strenuous outdoor activity when pollution levels are high. In Selangor, schools, kindergartens and childcare centres may be closed if API readings rise above 200.
The situation is especially serious in Serian, Sarawak, where the API climbed above 500 earlier in September, resulting in the declaration of a localised state of emergency. Cloud-seeding operations have also been carried out as authorities attempt to improve conditions.
Malaysia&rsquo;s Meteorological Department is also forecasting haze across several parts of the country. Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are expected to continue experiencing hazy conditions, although isolated thunderstorms in some areas could provide temporary relief.
What Is Causing The Haze?

The current haze is linked to a combination of dry weather, wildfires and transboundary smoke, with Indonesia facing a particularly difficult fire season.
Indonesia has experienced worsening forest and land fires amid an intense El Ni&ntilde;o pattern, which has contributed to hot and dry conditions that make fires easier to start and harder to control. Malaysian authorities have previously worked with Indonesia on cloud-seeding efforts, including arrangements allowing Malaysian agencies to conduct operations within Indonesian airspace.
The haze is not only an environmental issue. Fine particles such as PM2.5 can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, making prolonged exposure particularly concerning for children, older people and those with existing respiratory conditions.
Anak Krakatau Eruption Adds To Regional Disruption

At the same time, Indonesia is dealing with a separate natural hazard as Anak Krakatau continues to erupt in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.
The volcano began erupting late on 4 September, with repeated eruptions sending volcanic ash high into the atmosphere. Ash reached around 6,000 metres over the Java side and as high as 15,000 metres over the Sumatra side and parts of Banten, according to Indonesian authorities.
The continuing activity has affected aviation across the region, with eight Indonesian airports temporarily closed because of the danger posed by volcanic ash. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Indonesia&rsquo;s main international gateway, has been among the most seriously affected.
As of 7 September, the airport and seven others remained closed, while the Indonesian government warned that flight disruptions could continue because wind conditions were changing and the movement of ash was difficult to predict. Around 170,000 passengers have been affected by delays and cancellations across the eight airports.
Malaysians Travelling To Jakarta Could Face Disruptions

The eruption has also had a direct impact on travel between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Earlier disruptions resulted in 31 Malaysia-Jakarta flights being cancelled, with Kuala Lumpur International Airport recording the largest number of affected services. Penang, Kuching, Subang and Kota Bharu airports were also affected.
Passengers whose flights are disrupted have been advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest information, as schedules can change quickly depending on the movement of the volcanic ash cloud.
The disruption is not limited to Indonesia, with regional carriers also adjusting or cancelling services involving Jakarta.
Indonesia Steps Up Its Response

Indonesian authorities have introduced several measures to deal with the eruption and its effects on communities.
Health authorities have prepared medical supplies including nebulisers, oxygen concentrators, eye drops and ointments for people experiencing respiratory, eye and skin irritation caused by volcanic ash. Residents in affected areas have also been advised to remain indoors where possible and wear masks and eye protection when going outside.
Schools in Jakarta and Lampung have moved towards remote learning as a precaution, while authorities are also carrying out weather modification operations in an effort to bring ash particles down more quickly.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has been preparing aircraft for cloud-seeding operations, while other measures such as water mist could be used if suitable rain clouds do not form.
Anwar Expresses Support For Indonesia

Against the backdrop of these challenges, Anwar has expressed Malaysia&rsquo;s solidarity with Indonesia.
During a phone conversation with former Indonesian president Joko Widodo, who was in Penang for the Penang Peace Dialogue, Anwar said Malaysia and Indonesia were not simply neighbours but countries linked by history, culture and close ties.
He also said that the friendship and mutual respect between the two countries would continue despite changes in political positions and responsibilities.
Anwar&rsquo;s comments come as both countries continue to face environmental and weather-related challenges, including haze and the wider effects of an increasingly difficult dry season.
What Malaysians Should Expect Next
For now, the haze situation is expected to remain a concern, particularly in areas already recording unhealthy API levels. Authorities will continue monitoring air quality, weather conditions and hotspot activity while using measures such as enforcement against open burning and cloud seeding where appropriate.
With Malaysia&rsquo;s weather forecasts still showing haze in several areas over the coming days, residents are advised to monitor official API readings and limit prolonged outdoor activity when pollution levels become unhealthy.
Meanwhile, the Anak Krakatau eruption remains unpredictable. Indonesian authorities have stressed that volcanic activity can fluctuate and that the timing and scale of future eruptions cannot be precisely forecast. The volcano remains under heightened monitoring, while an exclusion zone of three kilometres around its active crater remains in place.
For Malaysians, the combination of haze, wildfires and volcanic activity across the region means the coming days could continue to bring air-quality concerns and travel disruptions, making it important to stay updated through official government, weather and airline channels.
