<p>After a seven-year break, Urbanscapes is officially returning to Kuala Lumpur, bringing Malaysia&rsquo;s long-running creative arts festival back to the city from 15 October to 1 November 2026.</p>
<p>The 2026 edition will centre around the theme &lsquo;Made Different&rsquo;, celebrating Malaysian creatives, artists, musicians, performers, makers and communities who approach the city from their own unique perspectives. The festival will take place across multiple landmark locations around Kuala Lumpur, with experiences spanning music, art, design, food and culture.</p>
<p><strong>A New Chapter For Urbanscapes</strong></p>

<p>Rather than returning simply as another large-scale festival, Urbanscapes 2026 is positioning itself as a commissioning platform for local creativity.</p>
<p>Selected creatives will be given the opportunity to transform their perspectives and personal connections with Kuala Lumpur into experiences for the wider public. Their ideas, stories and collaborations will become part of a festival that uses the city itself as its canvas.</p>
<p>At the centre of this year's edition are &lsquo;The Originals&rsquo;, referring to creatives and communities that helped shape Urbanscapes throughout its history, alongside &lsquo;The Next Wave&rsquo;, a newer generation of talent redefining what being &ldquo;Made Different&rdquo; means today.</p>
<p>Together, the two groups are expected to showcase different interpretations of Kuala Lumpur through a mixture of commissioned works, performances and community-driven experiences.</p>
<p><strong>From A Small Arts Festival To A KL-Wide Celebration</strong></p>

<p>First launched in 2002, Urbanscapes began as a relatively small arts and music festival at a time when independent creative events were still less common in Malaysia.</p>
<p>Over the years, it grew into a city-wide celebration covering music, visual arts, design, film, theatre, dance, food and other creative projects, while becoming known for bringing events into different parts of Kuala Lumpur instead of relying on a single festival ground.</p>
<p>Its previous editions have transformed locations including REXKL, Medan Pasar, Kwai Chai Hong, Sentul Depot, The Godown KL and other public and heritage spaces into temporary creative hubs.</p>
<p>The festival also attracted international names such as Sigur R&oacute;s, Franz Ferdinand, Tame Impala and M83, alongside Malaysian and regional artists.</p>
<p><strong>Urbanscapes&rsquo; Last Edition Was In 2019</strong></p>

<p>The last edition of Urbanscapes was held in 2019, before the festival went on its extended break.</p>
<p>That edition featured around 80 programmes across nine days, covering everything from music and theatre to public art, dance, film and food. It attracted close to 85,000 festival-goers, making it one of the festival's biggest editions.</p>
<p>The 2019 line-up included international and regional acts such as Glass Animals, The Drums, Boy Pablo, Colde, Sunset Rollercoaster and Boy Azooga, alongside local performers and creative projects.</p>
<p>After seven years away, its return is expected to bring back some familiar Urbanscapes energy while introducing a new generation of creatives to the platform.</p>

<p>While the full programme has yet to be revealed, organisers have confirmed that Urbanscapes 2026 will feature commissioned experiences across music, art, design, food and culture.</p>
<p>The festival is once again expected to make use of different spaces throughout Kuala Lumpur, allowing visitors to experience the city alongside the creative works being presented.</p>
<p>More importantly, the &lsquo;Made Different&rsquo; theme puts the focus on how creatives see and interact with Kuala Lumpur, with the city&rsquo;s people, spaces and culture becoming an important part of the experience.</p>
<p>The full list of participating artists, creatives, collaborators, venues and individual programmes will be announced progressively in the lead-up to the festival.</p>
