CEO Mark Zuckerberg has eyes on building the metaverse of social media. He first revealed the idea of changing their name during the annual Connect conference back in 28 October and it was the signal that the tech giant&rsquo;s ambition has more than social media on their minds.
The rebrand would likely position Facebook as one of the parent companies which will oversee groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus and more.

At the moment, Facebook has over 10,000 employees who build consumer hardware such as AR glasses which Zuckerberg believes will eventually be ubiquitous as smartphones.

According to Zuckerberg, the metaverse is going to be a big focus and he thinks that it is going to be a part of the new chapter of how the internet evolves after the mobile internet. Aside from that, it&rsquo;s going to be the next big chapter for their company as they really plan to double down in this area.
Now the real question is how will we cope when we enter the metaverse? It seems like Facebook is really out there to control it all. 
Also, for those who don&rsquo;t know what a metaverse is, it&rsquo;s a sci-fi term which is a virtual world for people to escape to. In some ways, it&rsquo;s like Ready Player One.

More than 2.2 million students across Malaysia can begin redeeming their RM100 MADANI Book Voucher from today, 1 July, as the government rolls out the 2026 edition of the initiative aimed at encouraging reading and improving access to educational materials.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has allocated RM221.6 million for this year's programme, which will benefit 2,217,579 students nationwide through a fully digital voucher system.
Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh announced in the Dewan Rakyat that eligible students can redeem their e-vouchers from 1 July until 31 October, giving them four months to purchase approved reading materials.
More Than 2.2 Million Students To Benefit

The initiative continues the government's effort to ease the financial burden on students and families while promoting a stronger reading culture among young Malaysians.
According to Wong, the programme's allocation of RM221.6 million will ensure every eligible student receives a RM100 digital voucher that can only be used to purchase books.
How To Redeem The Voucher

Meanwhile, students at public universities can redeem their vouchers through the <a href="https://mysiswaplace.my/welcome">MySiswaPlace</a> portal.
The fully digital system allows students from across the country, including those living in rural and remote areas, to purchase books online and have them delivered directly to their homes.
New Requirement Introduced This Year

One of the biggest updates to the 2026 programme is the introduction of the MADANI Special Title Focus.

The selected collection includes literary classics and works of literature, as well as books covering history, philosophy, economics, geopolitics and human capital development.
Students are also encouraged to explore titles related to future-focused subjects, including artificial intelligence (AI), information technology, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and digitalisation.
The ministry said the initiative is intended to broaden students' knowledge beyond their school curriculum while encouraging interest in emerging technologies and strategically important fields.
Digital System Introduced To Improve Transparency
The Ministry of Education first switched to a fully digital voucher system in 2024 following complaints that some recipients had sold their physical vouchers at discounted prices instead of using them to purchase books.
Wong previously explained that moving the programme online has significantly improved transparency while ensuring government allocations are used for their intended purpose.
He said the digital platform enables the ministry to monitor voucher usage more effectively, helping eliminate misuse and preventing leakages.
The online purchasing system has also made it easier for students nationwide to access reading materials regardless of where they live.

The ministry also reported that the programme achieved a 100% redemption rate in 2024, demonstrating the success of its digital implementation.
Wong described the programme as having delivered 100% redemption, 100% transparency and zero leakages, while ensuring students across both urban and rural communities enjoy equal opportunities to obtain quality reading materials.

The MADANI Book Voucher Programme forms part of the government's broader efforts to encourage reading habits among Malaysian students while reducing the cost of purchasing educational resources.

The new passport officially became available on 1 July, following its launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The upgraded travel document is being introduced in stages across the country, giving eligible Malaysians aged 18 and above the option of choosing either a five-year or 10-year passport depending on their travel needs.
According to the Home Ministry, the initiative is aimed at making passport renewals more convenient while reinforcing Malaysia's reputation as one of the world's most trusted travel documents.
Two Validity Options For Travellers

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the longer validity period is intended to reduce the frequency of renewals while offering greater convenience, particularly for those who travel regularly for work, business, education or family commitments.
The ministry also hopes the initiative will simplify passport applications and reduce administrative workload over time.
Nationwide Rollout Begins In Phases

While applications are now open, the new passport is not being introduced at every Immigration office simultaneously.

According to Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban, the nationwide rollout is expected to be completed in seven phases by August, ensuring a smooth operational transition as offices gradually begin issuing the redesigned passport.
He added that new-generation passport printing machines are capable of producing up to 60 passports per hour, supporting the current average monthly demand of around 160,000 passports, although Malaysia often issues between 180,000 and 220,000 passports each month.
Nearly Double The Security Features

Anthropic revealed the update in a post on X, saying it had received official notice that export controls on both Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 had been lifted.

The Federal Court has postponed its highly anticipated decision on the prosecution's final appeal against Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's acquittal in the Armada funds case after one of the judges on the panel went on medical leave.
The verdict, originally scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday morning, will now be announced on 13 July, extending the wait for the former Youth and Sports Minister to learn whether his acquittal will stand or whether his earlier conviction will be reinstated.
The delay came after Federal Court judge Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali was unable to attend proceedings due to illness.
Court Forced To Postpone Decision

"We were ready with the decision, but unfortunately this unexpected situation has occurred," Abu Bakar told the courtroom.
He added that although the judgment had already been finalised, the court would instead deliver it on 13 July, subject to the availability of all parties.
Abu Bakar also explained that the court had considered informing the parties earlier about the postponement, but the development occurred late the previous day. Instead, he chose to appear personally in court to explain the situation.

Following the postponement, Syed Saddiq's father, Syed Abdul Rahman Syed Abdullah Al-Sagoff, described the situation as another test for the family.
He urged his son to remain patient, saying they accepted the delay with an open heart.
"There is nothing much to say. Just remember that all of this is a test. We have to be patient," he told reporters outside the courthouse.
Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq's mother chose not to comment on the postponement.
Appeal Centres On Four Criminal Charges

The Federal Court is hearing the Attorney General's Chambers' appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit Syed Saddiq of four charges involving criminal breach of trust, dishonest misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to funds belonging to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's youth wing, Armada.
The charges include allegedly abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million, dishonestly misappropriating RM120,000 from Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise's Maybank Islamic account, and two counts of money laundering involving RM50,000 each, which were allegedly transferred into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.
The RM120,000 charge alleges that Syed Saddiq instructed Armada assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali to dispose of the funds between 8 and 21 April 2018.
From Conviction To Acquittal

The case has seen several major developments over the past few years.
On 9 November 2023, the High Court found Syed Saddiq guilty on all four charges and sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine.
However, on 25 June 2025, the Court of Appeal unanimously overturned both the conviction and sentence, acquitting and discharging the Muar MP.
In its judgment, the appellate court found that the prosecution had failed to establish the necessary elements of the offences and ruled that giving instructions to withdraw funds could not automatically be treated as disposing of assets in the manner alleged by the prosecution.
Unhappy with that decision, the Attorney General's Chambers subsequently appealed to the Federal Court, making this the final stage of the legal proceedings.
The judgment on 13 July will determine whether the Court of Appeal's acquittal remains in force or whether the High Court's conviction and sentence will be reinstated.
Teo Nie Ching's Remark Draws Attention In Parliament

While the court proceedings were postponed, Syed Saddiq returned to Parliament later the same day, where he questioned the Communications Ministry about the increasing sophistication of online scams powered by artificial intelligence.
During the session, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching responded to his question by highlighting government efforts to tackle AI-generated scams and deepfake content.
Before concluding her reply, she unexpectedly wished Syed Saddiq well ahead of his upcoming court decision.
"It is good to see you here. I wish you all the best on 13 July," she said, prompting reactions from fellow Members of Parliament.
Earlier in her response, Teo revealed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had removed more than 11,600 pieces of false or deepfake content following almost 12,500 complaints received since 2024.
She also noted that reports involving AI-generated deepfakes have risen sharply, increasing from 917 complaints in 2024 to 3,612 in 2025, with a further 7,967 complaints recorded as of 15 June this year.
To address the growing misuse of artificial intelligence, she said licensed social media platforms are now required under the Online Safety Act 2025 and the Risk Mitigation Code to implement stronger safeguards against harmful AI-generated content.
All Eyes Now On 13 July
With the judgment already prepared but temporarily withheld due to unforeseen circumstances, attention will now turn to 13 July, when the Federal Court is expected to deliver its long-awaited decision.
The outcome will not only determine the conclusion of Syed Saddiq's lengthy legal battle but could also have significant implications for his political future, as the prosecution seeks to reinstate the High Court's original conviction while the defence hopes to preserve the Court of Appeal's acquittal.
