First of all, pig heart? For real?
The first person to receive a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig is recovering well following the treatment, which took place last week in Baltimore, Maryland.
Transplant surgeons believe that the advancement will allow them to provide more humans with animal organs, but various ethical and technological challenges may come to mingle along the journey.
"This was a breakthrough surgery and brings us one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis. There are simply not enough donor human hearts available to meet the long list of potential recipients," Dr. Bartley Griffith, who surgically transplanted the pig heart into the patient, said in a statement.
&ldquo;We are proceeding cautiously, but we are also optimistic that this first-in-the-world surgery will provide an important new option for patients in the future,&rdquo; Griffith added.
Why Did You Agree For A Pig&rsquo;s Heart Inside Your Chest?
It was a life and death option for 57-year-old David Bennett.
&ldquo;It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it&rsquo;s a shot in the dark, but it&rsquo;s my last choice,&rdquo; Bennett said a day before his surgery, according to a statement released by the university.
Bennett had been on cardiac support for almost two months and couldn&rsquo;t receive a mechanical heart pump because of an irregular heartbeat.
Neither could he receive a human transplant, because he had a history of not complying with doctors&rsquo; treatment instructions. Given that he otherwise faced certain death, the researchers got permission from the FDA to give Bennett a pig heart.
The Procedure
Of course, it was nothing like, "Hey, how about a surgery with a pig's heart?" and Bennett like, "Yeah dude, why not."

The institution gained emergency approval from the US Food and Drug Administration on New Year's Eve to proceed with the experimental procedure under its compassionate use programme.
According to Al Jazeera news, "The FDA used our data and data on the experimental pig to authorise the transplant in an end-stage heart disease patient who had no other treatment options," said Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, who heads the University's programme on xenotransplantation &ndash; transplanting animal organs into humans.
There are about 110,000 Americans who are currently on the waiting list for an organ transplant, and more than 6,000 patients lose their life every year before getting one, as mentioned by <a href="https://www.organdonor.gov/">organdonor.gov</a>.
Revivicor, a regenerative medicine company located in Virginia, equipped Bennett with his genetically engineered pig heart. The transplant team extracted the pig's heart the morning of the surgery and placed it in a special device to keep it functioning until the actual&nbsp;surgery for Bennett.
In the heart implanted in Bennett, three genes previously linked with organ rejection were &ldquo;knocked out&rdquo; of the donor pig, and six human genes linked with immune acceptance were inserted into the pig genome.
To avoid unnecessary development of the pig heart tissue, researchers also removed a pig gene.
The research was partially financed by a $15.7 million research grant to test Revivicor's genetically modified pig hearts in baboon studies.
Bennett was given an experimental anti-rejection medication concerning the genetic alterations to the pig heart.

A 20-year-old foreign female student was found dead inside a condominium unit in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, in what police are investigating as a suspected murder case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Authorities have arrested a foreign male student, also believed to be in his 20s and studying at the same private higher education institution, to assist with investigations. Preliminary findings suggest the victim suffered multiple injuries before her death, with police treating the case as a homicide.
Police Called to Scene After Distress Report

A foreign man was arrested shortly afterwards at the same location. Police also seized several items believed to be linked to the investigation, including potential forensic evidence.
The victim&rsquo;s body was later transported to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Keep On Rollin’: Limp Bizkit Set For First-Ever Malaysia Concert As Kuala Lumpur Lands Their Only Asia Stop

Malaysia's controversial yet highly successful Rain Rave Water Music Festival 2026 generated an estimated RM392.33 million in economic returns, according to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Speaking during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Tiong said the festival demonstrated the effectiveness of event-based tourism in driving visitor spending, economic activity and international exposure under the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
Held from 30 April to 2 May, the festival attracted approximately 415,000 visitors across Kuala Lumpur and six other locations nationwide, making it one of the country's largest tourism events this year.
Kuala Lumpur Led The Economic Impact

The flagship Rain Rave event in Bukit Bintang attracted around 250,000 visitors, comprising approximately 150,000 domestic tourists and 100,000 international visitors from countries including China, Japan, India, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
According to Tiong, the Kuala Lumpur edition alone generated an estimated RM320.43 million in economic returns.
Meanwhile, companion events held in Terengganu, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Labuan and Langkawi attracted a further 165,000 visitors and contributed an estimated RM71.9 million.
Combined, the nationwide festival generated RM392.33 million in economic impact, with estimates calculated using Tourism Malaysia's Departing Visitors Survey (DVS) methodology, supported by data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
RM36 Return For Every RM1 Spent

Tiong revealed that the festival cost RM15 million to organise, with RM11 million funded by the government and RM4 million contributed by private-sector partners.
Based on the returns generated, every RM1 spent by the government delivered an estimated RM36 in economic value.
Although admission was free, Tiong said organisers could have generated substantial ticket revenue. Charging RM300 per ticket could have raised around RM75 million, while a RM200 ticket price could have generated approximately RM50 million.
However, the government chose to keep the event free as a gesture of appreciation to Malaysians in conjunction with Labour Day, while encouraging wider participation and promoting Visit Malaysia 2026.
Positive Impact On Businesses And Tourism Operators

The festival also delivered significant benefits to businesses in the Bukit Bintang-KLCC area.
According to feedback from the BBKLCC Tourism Association, Lot 10 recorded a 40% increase in visitor traffic and a 45% rise in sales during the festival period. Sungei Wang Plaza also reported a 31.3% increase in visitors alongside stronger sales performance.
The food and beverage sector experienced a boost as well, with Pavilion Kuala Lumpur reporting an 11% increase in average sales and higher walk-in customer numbers.
A total of 63 food stalls and 15 craft booths participated in the festival, generating direct sales of RM388,690.
Tiong highlighted the experience of one food vendor from Kelantan who reportedly earned RM4,600 on the first day, RM6,200 on the second day and approximately RM10,000 on the third day of the festival &mdash; far exceeding the vendor's usual daily earnings back home.
The tourism sector also benefited, with around 80 hotels nationwide offering discounts of between 30% and 50% during the festival period. Many participating hotels reportedly recorded occupancy rates close to full capacity, particularly in Kuala Lumpur and Bukit Bintang.

Beyond visitor spending, Rain Rave also generated considerable international exposure for Malaysia.
Tiong said 41 international media representatives attended the event, helping to promote both the festival and Visit Malaysia 2026 to overseas audiences.
The festival generated nearly 10,000 media reports and digital content pieces, creating an estimated publicity value of RM77.5 million.
On social media, the event recorded an estimated reach of 1.9 billion, alongside 25.1 million interactions and 25.3 million livestream and video-view engagements.
The minister described the festival as an important platform for showcasing Malaysia to the world while attracting new and repeat visitors.
Blending Global Entertainment With Local Culture
Despite facing criticism from some quarters before the event, Tiong defended the festival as an example of how international-standard entertainment can coexist with Malaysian cultural values.
Alongside modern performances and large-scale attractions, visitors were introduced to traditional music, cultural fashion showcases, heritage cuisine, traditional games and local artistic performances.
He said the approach allowed visitors to enjoy a world-class experience while learning more about Malaysia's culture and heritage.
Following the strong turnout and economic impact, Tiong said industry players and local businesses have expressed support for Rain Rave to become an annual international-scale event.
He described the festival as a strategic platform that strengthens event-based tourism, boosts visitor spending and raises Malaysia's profile on the global tourism stage ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Disney Korea has officially announced a major partnership between Disney Pixar&rsquo;s beloved Toy Story franchise and PEACEMINUSONE, the creative label founded by K-pop superstar G-Dragon. Many of the designs combine these iconic Pixar characters with PEACEMINUSONE&rsquo;s famous daisy emblem, creating exclusive artwork that merges Disney nostalgia with G-Dragon&rsquo;s artistic vision.
The collaboration will also mark PEACEMINUSONE&rsquo;s expansion into the tech accessories category through a partnership with CASETiFY.
The CASETiFY collection includes phone cases, AirPods cases, MagSafe accessories, cardholder stands and grip stands featuring special Toy Story-inspired artwork.
In addition to tech accessories, fans can also look forward to lifestyle items such as caps, keychains, pins, chains, bandanas and other limited-edition merchandise.
Immersive Pop-Up Stores Across Asia

Additional pop-up activations are expected to follow in other cities across the Asia-Pacific region.
