The Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 is one of the most looked forward to and also controversial winter Olympics that&rsquo;s being held.

Ever since the Covid-19 breakout in China, there are many countries out there wanting to boycott from attending the event due to it being in China.
China had also placed strict lockdowns in many of their cities due to the spike in Covid-19 again and in preparation for the Winter Olympics.

But that&rsquo;s not the most controversial part as one Olympian has become the talk of the town.
Meet Eileen Feng Gu

She is a US born Olympian, but she&rsquo;ll be competing for China in the quest for a gold medal in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Back in 2019, she had met with President Xi Jinping at a Winter Olympics preparation event and was dressed in the Chinese team uniform as she officially switched to representing the country and is now China&rsquo;s biggest hope in getting Gold Medals for the Winter Olympics.
Eileen&rsquo;s mother comes from China and also enjoys winter sports. Her mother was the one who kick started her career as she enrolled Eileen in lessons in Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada mountains so she could keep up with her. In that regard, her mother had &ldquo;accidentally created a pro skier&rdquo;.
Eileen type of skiing is more freestyle which involves her pulling off jumps, tricks and various forms of aerial acrobatics rather than the traditional &ldquo;fastest down the hill&rdquo;. But she is also dubbed as an all-rounder, competing in everything from the freeski half-pipe and freeski slopestyle (skiing a course with various jumps and rails that allow you to do tricks), to freeski big air events (like slopestyle, but with terrifyingly large jumps).

As a result, she nabbed a record haul of medals at last year&rsquo;s FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships and at the Winter X Games.

When she isn&rsquo;t competing, she&rsquo;s often appearing at the front row at fashion weeks and modelling for brands such as Fendi and Chanel through her agency IMG.

Other professional athletes voiced their opinions about her move.
&ldquo;She became the athlete she is because she grew up in the United States, where she had access to premier training grounds and coaching that, as a female, she might not have had in China.
&ldquo;I think she would be a different skier if she grew up in China.
"This makes me sad. It would be nice to see the medals going to America,&rdquo; said former Winter X Games gold medallist Jen Hudak.
One thing to note is that China does not allow dual nationality so taking a Chinese passport is one option for her. Although she has not commented if she had abandoned her US passport for this purpose.
Although dubbed as a sports icon in China where kids messaged her saying she&rsquo;s the reason or them to pick up skiing, she had also received many death threats from online trolls due to the team switch.
With the pressure building up to the Olympics, she&rsquo;s still excited to compete.
&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think that anybody going to the Olympics would ever say they are 100 percent ready. The only thing I can do is my best on the day. If that is a gold medal then I&rsquo;ll be super hyped and if not, I&rsquo;ll still be super hyped cause I worked hard,&rdquo; said Eileen.

For those wanting to catch the opening ceremony, it will be broadcasted live on Astro&rsquo;s Olympic Channel 810 at 7:55pm till 10:30pm.
Now that&rsquo;s an interesting thing to see. It seems like thanks to her there&rsquo;s a better bond between those generation Z in China and the US. Sports is sports and I think it&rsquo;s best to leave all the keyboard warrior debates out and show what athletes can do on the field.

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has officially announced his resignation from the Cabinet, ending his tenure as Malaysia&rsquo;s Minister of Economy. The lawsuit, brought by four animal rights activists, has drawn national attention and stirred public debate about the treatment of strays and the responsibilities of local authorities. Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing the plaintiffs, praised the court&rsquo;s ruling as a critical step forward.
&ldquo;This is a huge win for animal rights in Malaysia generally and a positive first step towards obtaining justice for Kopi, who was murdered in cold blood,&rdquo; he told reporters following the decision.
Who Was Kopi? The Gentle Stray That Captured Hearts

Kopi was a familiar figure in the Besut district, known to many residents and animal lovers for her calm and affectionate demeanour. Her popularity soared in March 2024, after a video went viral on social media showing her gently playing with a stray kitten. The video, uploaded by one of her feeders, Abby Razali, garnered widespread attention and led to a wave of online affection.
But that public goodwill turned into collective outrage when news broke that Kopi had been shot dead during a stray dog culling operation carried out by the Besut District Council. The shooting occurred in the early hours of 6 October 2024, reportedly around 1.30am.
According to Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, one of the plaintiffs, several residents were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigating, they observed three council officers driving around in a pick-up truck. Shortly after, Kopi was found dead from gunshot wounds. Her death, initially revealed via a post on the &ldquo;My Forever Doggo&rdquo; Instagram account, prompted widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Legal Grounds: Alleged Breach of Animal Welfare Law

Shashi Kumar &mdash; are contending that the use of firearms to kill the dog and the unnecessary suffering inflicted on her contravene Sections 29(e) and 30(1) of the Act.
Section 29(e) prohibits causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, while Section 30(1) forbids the killing of animals using a firearm, except under specific conditions outlined in Section 30(2). These exceptions include approval by a veterinary authority, instances where an animal poses imminent danger to human life, or where such action is necessary to control the spread of disease.
The plaintiffs are therefore seeking a declaration from the court that the use of firearms in this case was not legally justified, and that the authorities acted beyond the bounds of the law.
Challenging Local By-Laws
Beyond the immediate question of Kopi&rsquo;s death, the case also seeks to address a broader legal conflict between federal and local regulations. The activists are challenging the legality of the Besut District Council&rsquo;s Dog Licensing By-Laws 1990, specifically Sections 9(1) and 9(2), which empower council officers to shoot licensed or unlicensed dogs if no owner can be located.
The plaintiffs argue that these by-laws are incompatible with the stricter protections afforded by the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that supersedes local legislation. They assert that allowing council officers to indiscriminately kill strays undermines national legal standards and sets a dangerous precedent.
Government and Council&rsquo;s Defence

In response to the lawsuit, the Terengganu state government filed a motion on 31 December 2024 to have the suit dismissed, followed by a similar motion from the district council on 1 January 2025. A statement issued by the Besut District Council on 13 October 2024 maintained that the actions taken during the culling operation were lawful. However, this justification has failed to appease critics, who argue that even if procedures were followed, the procedures themselves may be unlawful under federal law.
A Moment of Reckoning for Animal Welfare in Malaysia
The case has galvanised animal rights supporters across the country and is being closely watched by legal experts, animal advocacy groups, and members of the public alike. Many see it as a test of Malaysia&rsquo;s commitment to upholding the protections enshrined in the Animal Welfare Act.

Malaysia is once again celebrating a landmark moment in badminton history as national shuttlers Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani officially become the world's top-ranked men&rsquo;s doubles pair, according to the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on 27 May 2025. This milestone marks the first time a Malaysian men's doubles duo has ascended to the coveted No.1 position in nearly a decade.
A Return to the Summit After Almost a Decade
Goh and Nur, known affectionately by fans as FeiDin, now sit atop the global rankings with 91,090 points, surpassing Denmark&rsquo;s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who dropped to second place after failing to defend their title at the recently concluded Malaysia Masters. The Danes were dethroned following their semi-final loss to fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

Although Goh and Nur themselves bowed out in the quarter-finals of the same tournament after losing to another Malaysian pair, Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun, their consistent performances over the past year were enough to push them into the top spot. Their victory at the India Open in January 2025 was a pivotal moment, bolstering their climb after strong showings in 2024, which included titles at the Japan Open, China Open, and Arctic Open, as well as runner-up finishes at the BWF World Tour Finals and the Asian Championships.
This achievement makes Goh and Nur the first Malaysian men's doubles team to reach the world No.1 ranking since Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in March 2016. Razif emphasised that without consistent performance and proper preparation, the pair risks losing their hard-earned position. &ldquo;Being on top must be motivation, not a destination. They must continue to train hard and think like champions if they are to remain at the peak,&rdquo; he added.
Spotlight on the Singapore Open
