Malaysians are increasingly opting for cashless payment methods when dining out, with more restaurants and facilities now accepting QR pay from banks and e-wallet services like Grab Pay, Shopee Pay, and TnG. Even if QR pay is not available, debit card payments are still an option.
However, for frequent travellers in Southeast Asia, using local currency can be challenging. But it looks like that issue has been solved thanks to the new seamless cashless transaction update.
Malaysia &amp; Indonesia Announces Joint QR Payment System

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and Bank Indonesia (BI) have now jointly announced the Indonesia-Malaysia cross-border QR payment linkage following a successful pilot phase back in January 2022.
The new joint QR payment system is exactly the same as the linkage that has been done with Singapore which allows our nation seamlessly make payments via scanning the national unified QR code with Malaysia&rsquo;s DuitNow and Indonesia&rsquo;s Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS).
People using either system can use their mobile phones to scan the QR code of a merchant at physical stores and make immediate payments. They can also make online payments if e-commerce sites use the services offered by participating financial institutions. Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo stated that the partnership aligns with the G20 initiative to establish the Roadmap for Enhancing Cross Border Payments.
Merchants are issued payment cards by participating financial institutions such as CIMB, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank, Public Bank, and TNG Digital. Meanwhile, consumers are issued payment cards by acquirers such as AmBank, Boost, Hong Leong Bank, Maybank, Public Bank, Razer Merchant Services, TNG Digital, and United Overseas Bank Malaysia.

The new cashless payment linkage expects to help strengthen the two nations' economic ties and to help build a more inclusive and stronger post-pandemic economic recovery. Back in July 2022,
In July of last year, the central banks of five Southeast Asian nations declared their aim to establish payment system connections throughout the region to boost trade and simplify travel. In November, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand to enhance payment connectivity, particularly through QR codes and rapid payment systems.
At present, Malaysia has QR payment links with Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand for cross-border transactions, but there is no official announcement yet regarding when a similar linkage will be established between Malaysia and the Philippines.

Education and innovation were named as key pillars of the city&rsquo;s success, with local universities ranked among the top 50 globally and a remarkable 7.37 patents granted per 10,000 residents, highlighting a &ldquo;steady pipeline&rdquo; of new ideas. Singapore also enjoys high digital literacy, with 55 per cent of citizens possessing digital skills and over 63 per cent fluent in a foreign language &mdash; a reflection of its global connectivity.

Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

&ldquo;My business has to contend with more and more extra fees, and I&rsquo;d need to hire someone just to operate and manage the sales channel,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s pushed my business away from focusing too much effort towards selling on Shopee.&rdquo;

Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.

&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress
