Back in the day before our smartphones existed, we were doing many things the old fashion way. But if there&rsquo;s one thing that many of us Malaysians will have it's how we used to visit the bookstore often when we were kids.
Every weekend when going out with our parents, there&rsquo;s always that one moment that you&rsquo;ll stop by the bookstore to check out some of the latest books or even chill around in there as they always provided a reading area for both adults and kids.
BORDERS Bookstore To Cease Operation On 31 August

The American multinational book and music retailer first made its way to our shores back in 2005 and operated under Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd with their first outlet opening in Berjaya Times Square. As of now, there are only 4 stores running around Kuala Lumpur with their Bangsar Village II outlet closing this 31 July.
As 2023 marks its 18th year of operation in Malaysia, Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd had thanked all its customers for the love and support they have shown towards the bookstore over the years as they are grateful for the trust and loyalty customers have shown them.
&ldquo;Although our journey is coming to an end, our commitment to our customers remains unchanged. We will ensure that you receive the best customer service until the very end,&rdquo; wrote a notice at their outlet.

If you&rsquo;re looking to purchase books online, you&rsquo;re out of luck as the Borders Malaysia website states that their services were no longer available since 31 May. However, you can still head over to their stores to get your hands on books as well as exclusive promotions.
In the digital age, the rise of smartphones has revolutionized the way we consume reading materials, causing a significant impact on brick-and-mortar bookstores. One such example is MPH, which has now reduced its presence to only 9 physical stores nationwide. Regrettably, these closures have become inevitable as publications, including newspapers and magazines, have also faced challenges, with some ceasing publication altogether or downsizing their workforce in an effort to adapt to the digital era.
The closure of these bookstores was a long time coming, with Borders Group Inc filing for bankruptcy in February 2011. Following the liquidation of their assets, all Borders stores in the United States ceased operations by September 2011. This marked a turning point in the industry, highlighting the profound changes brought about by digitalization.
It&rsquo;s sad to see many of our beloved bookstores close down over the years but it was good while it lasted. Goodbye BORDERS, thanks for all the memories and you will be missed.

&nbsp;On the afternoon of 9 April 2025, Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh, a 42-year-old Sarawak-born businesswoman and mother, vanished under mysterious circumstances while travelling to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya. Her disappearance &mdash; abrupt, unexplained, and now entering its fourth week &mdash; has stunned the nation and triggered growing concern over the protection of witnesses and individuals involved in high-profile investigations.
Pamela was scheduled to give a statement that afternoon in relation to an ongoing probe involving money laundering and corruption. However, she never arrived. Despite police investigations, multiple witness interviews, and widespread media coverage, her whereabouts remain unknown. Her family alleges she may have been abducted just minutes from her destination.
A Routine Trip That Ended in Silence

At 1.52pm, her mobile phone&rsquo;s location was last detected along the Maju Expressway near Bandar Putra Permai &mdash; roughly 20 minutes from her destination.
At 1.57pm, Pamela sent what would be her final known message &mdash; a WhatsApp note to her lawyer stating she was on her way and estimated to arrive by 2.08pm. What happened in the next few minutes remains unclear.
By 2.30pm, her lawyer had become concerned when Pamela failed to arrive and could no longer be reached. Calls to her mobile phone went unanswered. WhatsApp messages remained undelivered. At 3.02pm, a missing persons report was filed at the Putrajaya police station. A second report followed the next day at the Seri Kembangan station.
Eyewitness Accounts and a Troubling Allegation

The family&rsquo;s concerns escalated after receiving a startling account from the Grab driver who transported Pamela that day. The driver, who later filed his own police report, claimed that as he approached the vicinity of the MACC headquarters, his vehicle was intercepted by three separate cars. Two individuals &mdash; a man in a police vest and a woman in a police uniform &mdash; reportedly approached his vehicle, demanded the driver&rsquo;s MyKad (Malaysian identity card), and instructed Pamela to exit the vehicle and follow them.
The encounter reportedly occurred close enough to the MACC building that the Grab trip was automatically marked as completed. The implication was that Pamela had either arrived or was about to arrive at her scheduled appointment.
What happened next remains a mystery. Pamela has not been seen since. No official arrests have been made. No ransom demands have emerged. Her phone has remained inactive, and immigration checks confirm she has not left the country.
Under Investigation: MACC and Police Face Scrutiny

Hah is the founder and executive chairman of the JoinLand Group &mdash; a sprawling Sarawak-based conglomerate with operations in agro-forestry, real estate, frozen food, and international trade.
Both Ling and Hah are subjects of the MACC probe, which is being conducted under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLA). &ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

In the emotional video, the victim claimed that he was subjected to multiple bullying incidents by fellow trainees, prompting widespread outrage on social media.

The allegations include being struck by a thrown object while resting and having his motorcycle physically lifted and locked in a cage by a group of peers. The video includes short footage of the victim lying down and reacting as a white item is hurled at him.
&ldquo;I was shocked to find out what he&rsquo;d been through,&rdquo; said Masdo in the clip. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s beyond unacceptable. When the person being bullied is someone with disabilities, I consider the bullies absolute cowards.&rdquo;
He further called for immediate institutional action and warned that if GiatMARA failed to act, he would escalate the matter himself.
MARA Chairman Promises Stern Action

In response to the public uproar, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki released a statement confirming that an internal investigation would be reopened.
He said that all individuals involved in the alleged bullying &mdash; including the victim &mdash; would be summoned by GiatMARA Alor Gajah&rsquo;s management to provide statements and cooperate with the inquiry. Dr Asyraf said he had directed the agency&rsquo;s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Hamdi Ibrahim, to take immediate and comprehensive action.
&ldquo;Preliminary information suggests the incident may have stemmed from a case of rough joking among trainees during their earlier training sessions at GiatMARA Alor Gajah,&rdquo; he said in a Facebook post. &ldquo;However, MARA takes all allegations of bullying seriously, regardless of intent. There will be no compromise.&rdquo;
The trainees involved are reportedly now undertaking industrial training in welding technology and metal fabrication.
&ldquo;Zero Tolerance&rdquo; Policy on Bullying Across All MARA Institutions

&ldquo;MARA does not and will not condone bullying in any form. Any form of misconduct, especially targeting persons with disabilities, will be met with the strictest disciplinary measures,&rdquo; he stated.
The chairman further outlined that this policy applies to all of MARA&rsquo;s educational and training institutions, including but not limited to the Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), GiatMARA centres, MARA Skills Institutes, MARA Colleges, Professional Colleges (KPM), Higher Skills Colleges (KKTM), MARA Poly-Tech Colleges (KPTM), as well as higher education institutions like the MARA Japan Industrial Institute (MJII), German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
He said the leadership across MARA&rsquo;s entire network of institutions understood his stance and were under strict instructions to act swiftly if bullying is confirmed.
The Case Was Previously Investigated in February, Say Exco

While the video has recently gone viral and reignited national attention, Melaka authorities have clarified that the incident was not new and had in fact taken place in February 2024.
According to Melaka State Executive Councillor for Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs, Datuk Rahmad Mariman, the case had already been handled by MARA earlier this year. All parties involved were summoned for questioning and disciplinary action was taken.
&ldquo;MARA took immediate steps once they were informed of the incident back in February. All students involved were called in, statements were recorded, and those responsible apologised directly to the victim,&rdquo; Rahmad said. &ldquo;The student wasn&rsquo;t injured, and he has since resumed his training without interruption.&rdquo;
He added that while the viral video has revived public interest, the case had been closed months ago following internal resolution.
Institutional Accountability and Public Pressure Remain High
Although the case was technically resolved earlier this year, its resurgence online has placed renewed pressure on MARA to demonstrate transparency and enforce its anti-bullying policies consistently. The emotional nature of the video, along with the vulnerable status of the victim, has intensified public scrutiny.
The management of GiatMARA has pledged to cooperate fully with the follow-up probe to ensure public confidence is restored and that no similar incidents occur in the future. Authorities hope the renewed investigation will reinforce institutional accountability while serving as a firm warning against bullying within Malaysia&rsquo;s vocational and educational training ecosystem.

These include failing to ensure that its drivers possess valid Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and E-Hailing Vehicle Permit (eVP) licences&mdash;documents that are legally mandatory for all e-hailing drivers in Malaysia.
