For us Malaysians who are currently working, we all know the importance of having extra cash as it can be helpful to survive with the current inflation issue going on.
We also need to remember that as we receive our pay, a percentage of it is contributed to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) but if we want to withdraw it partially or in full, we&rsquo;ll need to fulfil some conditions:
<ul>
<li>At the age of 50</li>
<li>At the age of 55</li>
<li>At the age of 60</li>
<li>Reducing or redeeming a housing loan</li>
<li>Buying a house</li>
<li>Incapacitation</li>
<li>Education</li>
<li>Leaving the country</li>
<li>Pensionable employees and optional retirement</li>
<li>Members Investment Scheme (MIS)</li>
</ul>
And many more. But for most the time, this only allows you to withdraw form Account 2 of your EPF.
EPF Contributors May Soon Have More Flexibility

EPF is currently looking into introducing a new account dubbed &lsquo;Account 3&rsquo; which will allow contributors such as those in the informal sectors, to make withdrawals at any time said EPF chief strategy officer Nurhisham Hussein.
During a special media briefing the proposed &lsquo;Account 3&rsquo; is expected to be implemented for new contributors within two years as they aim to attract informal workers to make contributions to the EPF. Essentially, Account 3 will be catered towards business owners and those working in the creative &amp; professional industry.
"I think we are trying to accommodate the needs of the informal workers. But for [existing members who] don't think they have enough emergency funds; they can transfer their savings into Account 3 (from Accounts 1 and 2)."
What&rsquo;s The Purpose Of &lsquo;Account 3&rsquo;?

The main function of Account is just like a bank savings account where it addresses cashflow issues among informal sector workers. But if you&rsquo;re already working in the formal sector, you too as an existing member can voluntarily opt in once the account is created. EPF's Chief Strategy Officer, Nurhisham, clarified that the decision to enrol in Account 3 is entirely voluntary. Members who choose to participate will have the option to transfer their savings from Accounts 1 and 2 to Account 3, allowing them to make unconditional withdrawals.
In the context of EPF, Account 1 represents 70% of members' retirement savings, while Account 2 accounts for the remaining 30% and allows for discretionary withdrawals.
Furthermore, Account 3 will serve as an emergency fund. However, the EPF Chief Strategy Officer mentioned that it is likely to offer a lower dividend compared to the other two accounts.
Though we understand they want informal workers to make contributions, the likelihood of it may be slim as these workers typically like having control and receiving their lump sum of cash.

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded along the East-West Highway recently, where a baby elephant was struck and killed in a collision &mdash; the third reported elephant roadkill since 2024. A viral video captured the heart-wrenching sight of the calf&rsquo;s mother standing protectively over her baby&rsquo;s body for hours, reluctant to leave until sedated by wildlife officers.
The incident, which occurred on the stretch of road between Gerik and Jeli, cut through the heart of the Royal Belum State Park and Temengor Forest Reserve &mdash; two of Malaysia&rsquo;s most biodiverse and ecologically critical landscapes. These forests are key habitats for Malayan elephants, tapirs, sun bears, and the critically endangered Malayan tiger.
WWF-Malaysia: Short-Term Action is Crucial

Following the tragedy, WWF-Malaysia issued an urgent call for immediate and targeted intervention. While the organisation welcomed large-scale plans like the proposed Perak Elephant Sanctuary and federal funding for ecological corridors, it stressed that these long-term solutions cannot prevent the growing number of elephant deaths now occurring on Malaysian highways.
&ldquo;We welcome long-term efforts such as the Perak Elephant Sanctuary and forest protection incentives, but we must act now with short-term solutions to stop the bloodshed,&rdquo; WWF-Malaysia stated.
WWF-Malaysia outlined a series of practical, cost-effective measures that the government and road authorities can implement to save lives &mdash; both animal and human:
<ul>
<li>Install speed bumps at verified wildlife crossing hotspots to physically slow vehicles down.</li>
<li>Construct additional wildlife crossings, including underpasses and viaducts, to give elephants and other large mammals a safe way across highways.</li>
<li>Strictly enforce reduced speed limits, particularly during dusk-to-dawn hours when elephants are more active.</li>
<li>Expand wildlife corridor mapping to update where animals are currently moving due to habitat fragmentation.</li>
</ul>
These solutions, WWF notes, have been tested elsewhere in Malaysia with measurable success. For instance, a 200-metre wildlife viaduct at KM157 of the Gerik-Jeli Highway, built under the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan in 2015, has shown promise in reducing roadkill incidents &mdash; but it's currently the only one across a 100km stretch of road.
Shrinking Habitat, Rising Conflict

Peninsular Malaysia&rsquo;s elephant population is estimated at fewer than 1,500 individuals, and their habitat is shrinking rapidly. A 2016 study by WWF found that elephant roaming grounds in the peninsula have decreased by 68% over recent decades, largely due to land-use changes, agriculture, road expansion, and urban sprawl.
As a result, elephants are increasingly forced to cross roads and enter settlements in search of food and space, leading to rising conflict with humans. According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), between 2020 and 2024, there were 4,919 reported human-elephant conflict cases, causing RM39.4 million in damage to property, crops, and vehicles.
WWF-Malaysia is urging a more coordinated approach across agencies, states, and communities to protect remaining elephant habitats and minimise dangerous encounters.
Government Response: 39 Wildlife Crossings Upgraded

The Ministry of Works (KKR), together with the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), recently upgraded 39 known elephant crossing sites nationwide with warning signage and street lighting to alert drivers that they are entering wildlife corridors.
&ldquo;These signs and lighting systems aim to inform drivers they&rsquo;re entering areas frequently used by elephants moving between forest patches,&rdquo; said KKR in a public statement.
Authorities have also deployed electrified fencing, salt licks to lure elephants away from highways, and LED-based wildlife warning systems in several high-risk areas. While these efforts mark progress, conservation groups warn they are not enough unless supported by stronger enforcement and more physical barriers to prevent accidents.
Calls for Broader, Tech-Based Solutions

Road safety experts and environmentalists alike are calling for a more comprehensive, data-driven approach. Road safety advocate Datuk Mohammad Hisham Shafe stressed that collisions involving wildlife are not isolated incidents, but a growing trend that needs national-level attention.
He proposed:

<li>A nationwide hotspot mapping study to identify and prioritise dangerous crossing zones.</li>
<li>Advanced monitoring technologies, such as motion sensors and camera traps, to alert road users of wildlife presence.</li>
<li>Construction of additional animal-specific infrastructure, including overhead green bridges and larger underpasses designed for large mammals.</li>

&ldquo;These recommendations must be followed by real implementation &mdash; not just planning on paper,&rdquo; he added.
Know What to Do: Safety Tips for Drivers in Forest Zones

For those travelling through forested highways such as the Gerik-Jeli Highway, Tasik Banding, or Puncak Titiwangsa, caution is key. Wildlife experts and local conservationists advise the public to stay alert and adopt the following measures:

<li>Avoid night-time driving through known elephant zones, particularly during full moons or rainy weather, when visibility is low and elephant activity peaks.</li>
<li>Slow down and dim your lights if you see animals or receive headlight signals from other vehicles.</li>
<li>Never use high beams, honk, or provoke elephants &mdash; these actions may trigger aggression.</li>
<li>Do not stop to take photos or approach elephants. These are wild animals and can react unpredictably.</li>
<li>Turn back if an elephant displays warning signs such as ear flapping, trumpeting, or mock charges.</li>
</ul>
Remember, elephants can move up to 40km/h and may attack if threatened.
The Bigger Picture: Coexistence Requires Collective Effort

He emphasised that real change requires collaboration at every level &mdash; between federal and state governments, road authorities, plantation owners, and the public. No amount of funding or infrastructure will succeed without shared responsibility and accountability.

Malaysia remains one of the few places on Earth where wild elephants, tigers, and tapirs can still be encountered in their natural habitats. But that legacy is hanging by a thread. NCT Dream Is Bringing A Two-Day Concert To Malaysia In December 2025!

More than a decade after the horrific downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the United Nations&rsquo; aviation body has formally ruled that the Russian Federation was responsible for the 2014 air disaster over eastern Ukraine, which killed all 298 people on board. The decision marks a significant step in the long quest for truth, justice, and accountability led by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands.
MH17 Shot Down by Russian Missile Over War-Torn Ukraine

On 17 July 2014, MH17, a Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was shot down mid-flight while traversing Ukrainian airspace over the Donetsk region&mdash;an area engulfed in armed conflict between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists.
Investigations later confirmed the aircraft was struck by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile launched from territory controlled by pro-Russian militants. The crash resulted in the deaths of 283 passengers and 15 crew members. Among the victims were 196 Dutch nationals, 43 Malaysians, 38 Australians, 27 from Australia (including residents), 12 Indonesians, 10 Britons, 4 Germans, 4 Belgians, 3 Filipinos, 1 Canadian and 1 New Zealander.
The tragedy sent shockwaves around the globe, coming just four months after the disappearance of MH370, another Malaysia Airlines flight, whose fate remains unresolved.
ICAO Ruling: Russia Violated International Air Law

On 12 May 2025, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)&mdash;a specialised agency of the United Nations&mdash;ruled that Russia had violated international air law by failing to uphold its obligations under the Chicago Convention. The convention obliges all signatory states to &ldquo;refrain from the use of weapons against civil aircraft in flight.&rdquo;
The ruling followed a formal complaint lodged in 2022 by the governments of Australia and the Netherlands. The ICAO Council determined that the claims made were &ldquo;well-founded in fact and law,&rdquo; and that Russia had not only failed in its duty to protect civil aviation but also breached its international responsibilities.
Although ICAO lacks direct enforcement powers, its decisions carry substantial moral weight among its 193 member states and help shape global aviation norms.
Call for Reparations: Australia and the Netherlands Respond

Both Australia and the Netherlands have welcomed the ruling as a landmark development in the MH17 case. Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp described the decision as &ldquo;an important step towards establishing the truth and achieving justice and accountability for all victims of Flight MH17, and their families and loved ones.&rdquo;
He added that the ruling also served a broader purpose: &ldquo;It sends a clear message to the international community&mdash;states cannot violate international law with impunity.&rdquo;
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed those sentiments, calling the ruling a &ldquo;historic moment in the pursuit of truth, justice and accountability.&rdquo; She urged Russia to face up to its role in the disaster and begin negotiations for reparations.
&ldquo;We call upon Russia to finally take responsibility for this horrific act of violence and make reparations for its egregious conduct, as required under international law,&rdquo; Wong said.
Both countries are now pushing for the ICAO to move swiftly in determining the form of legal redress and reparations, with further deliberations expected in the coming weeks.
Legal Background: Previous Court Rulings and Moscow&rsquo;s Denials

However, while buyers may choose whether or not to use SPayLater, sellers are automatically enrolled in the programme with no option to opt out. This means they must absorb the associated transaction fee regardless of whether they benefit directly from the instalment feature.
Why Are Sellers Frustrated?

A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay
