Navigating the realm of public transport presents a delicate balance between convenience and concerns. While it stands as a valuable solution to alleviate town traffic, the drawbacks, such as the cost and the anonymity of drivers, underscore potential risks. Yet, the hazards are not exclusive to passengers alone; e-hailing drivers also face their share of vulnerabilities, making the entire transportation landscape a nuanced tapestry of safety considerations.
Recently, an elderly Grab driver barely dodged a life-threatening situation in Sungai Petani last Monday when a 13-year-old boy tried to stab him after a failed attempt at robbery. The boy has since been in police custody mere hours after the driver made a police report on the incident.
What Went Down?

The unfortunate event unfolded when the Grab driver received a booking to be picked up at Long Keladi 12 and dropped off at Lorong Astana 9/7 in Bandar Sri Astana. Along the way, the boy asked the driver to borrow RM50 to pay his house rent, but the driver claimed he had none to lend to the boy. When the driver suspected the boy did not have money to pay for the fare, he told him he would have to drop him off immediately. The boy insisted on dropping him off at the initial drop-off point so he could get the money to pay the fare.&nbsp;
However, upon reaching the destination, the boy made the driver return to his earlier pick-up point and gave the driver RM18 for the fare. On their way back to Long Keladi, the boy took the driver through narrow alleyways, which made the driver angry &ndash; feeling the boy was playing him. Little did he know, the boy was attempting to delay his impending horror.&nbsp;
Once they finally reached the final destination, the driver asked for an additional RM9, and the boy handed him RM20. When the driver was counting his change, the boy took out a knife, stabbed the driver, and tried to snatch the money away.
Luckily, the driver was fast enough to retaliate and grabbed the boy&rsquo;s hand and bit him before the boy escaped without his money and the knife. As luck would have it, the knife didn&rsquo;t go through his torso, thanks to his seatbelt (If you ever need a reminder to ALWAYS wear your seatbelt, this is it).

PDRM Remands The Teenager

In his statement, Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan, Kuala Muda OCPD, confirmed the boy was taken into custody at 10 pm the same day of the incident. &ldquo;The suspect is being remanded to assist the investigation under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery&rdquo;. The knife used by the boy was also seized after being left with the driver. From the look, the knife seemed to be the kind of knife commonly used in home kitchens.
Upon further investigation, the boy is the eldest of four siblings and didn&rsquo;t come from a troubled family. The boy also tested negative for drugs and did not have any prior criminal records. Asst Comm Zaidy stated that the boy was motivated to stab the driver when he was scolded by the driver &ndash; going back and forth for the journey.
