In Kuala Lumpur, the recent weather hasn't been favourable for commuters, with frequent rain showers leading to massive traffic jams, particularly during peak hours. Adding to the challenges are reports of trees falling across the Klang Valley, raising concerns among pedestrians and motorists alike. Given that many roads in Kuala Lumpur are lined with sizable trees, this poses a significant safety risk to everyone navigating the city.

Last week, Malaysians were rattled by an incident that left many feeling anxious. A tree fell in the middle of a street, tragically claiming the life of a man who was struck and trapped in his vehicle along Jalan Sultan Ismail. Following this heartbreaking event, there has been a clamour for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to take proactive measures in maintaining the trees around the city, with the aim of preventing similar incidents in the future.
DBKL Says Not All Trees In KL Are Their Responsibility

In a TikTok video shared by DBKL (@friendsofdbkl), the authoritative body clarified the tree classification system in Kuala Lumpur. Contrary to what one might expect, it's not about the species of trees, but rather the distinction between public and private trees in the city.

The DBKL officer in the video outlined the division of responsibility regarding trees in Kuala Lumpur: DBKL takes charge of public trees, while private trees are the responsibility of the landowner.
Under DBKL's purview, regular monitoring of public trees occurs, especially in response to public complaints or if a tree poses a risk to road safety. There's no specific age limit for trees in the city; they can remain as long as they're well-maintained. However, if a tree's condition deteriorates, DBKL may opt to remove it.
Residents of Kuala Lumpur can report any concerns about potentially hazardous trees through the Kuala Lumpur Public Complaint System website (adu@kl).
What About The Tree That Fell Along Jalan Sultan Ismail?

According to a report by Kosmo, DBKL clarified that the fallen tree, which tragically resulted in a fatality, was classified as a private tree since it stood on private property. As such, the responsibility for its maintenance fell upon the landowner rather than DBKL.
Moreover, DBKL has identified 174 trees as high-risk due to their age, being over 50 years old. Additionally, to mitigate potential structural failures in the future, DBKL has already felled 147 of these trees.

In a proactive measure to mitigate the risk of future tree collapses and address public safety concerns, DBKL is currently engaged in the systematic removal of trees identified as high-risk. However, the loss of these trees, which provide essential shade to the city, has prompted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to issue directives to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Kamazulzaman Mat Salleh. The instruction mandates the planting of 100 new trees for every tree that necessitates removal, ensuring that the city's greenery is replenished and maintained for environmental balance and urban aesthetics.
Now the pressing question remains: can Kuala Lumpur accommodate an additional 14,700 trees, given DBKL's commitment to planting 100 trees for each one removed? While the prospect of more greenery is enticing, it also poses logistical challenges. With rapid urban development already crowding the city, proper maintenance of these trees becomes paramount. Without adequate manpower and resources, the noble endeavour of expanding the city's green canopy could potentially introduce its own set of challenges. Balancing urban growth with environmental sustainability will be crucial in navigating this green initiative.
