This system aims to ensure more seamless travel between the two countries, especially during busy border times. It&rsquo;s estimated that each passenger can save about 20 seconds at each checkpoint, which can add up to a whole minute for a car with up to 10 passengers. Moreover, the QR code helps optimize the system and remains valid for a year from the entry date or until the passport of the QR holder expires, providing added convenience.

Malaysia Introduces A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) Starting 1 October

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the regulation, which initially began in 2019, will apply to entry points at both the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) in Johor Bahru and the CIQ Complex at the Sultan Abu Bakar Building at the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.
"Since April 2019, we have implemented the registration of VEP for foreign-registered vehicles crossing the CIQ Complex at Sultan Iskandar Building in Tambak Johor and the CIQ Complex at Sultan Abu Bakar Building. To ensure that foreign vehicle owners fully comply with road regulations in Malaysia, the Transport Ministry wishes to inform you that the VEP regulations will be fully enforced starting 1 October.
"Anyone driving a foreign-registered vehicle without VEP before entering or while in Malaysia is committing an offence under Section 66H (7) of the Road Transport Act 1987. If convicted, you may be fined up to RM2,000 or imprisoned for up to six months as stipulated in Section 119 (2) of Act 333," he said.
Vehicles Without VEP Can be Barred From Entering Malaysia Or Will Be Prevented From Leaving The Country

In addition to having a VEP, vehicles found without one will face action from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for breaching Section 66J of the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses outstanding issues related to foreign motor vehicles. This implies that vehicles without a VEP may have committed a road offence or have outstanding summonses, which must be settled before they are allowed to leave the country.
The VEP will be mandatory for all categories of foreign-registered vehicles.
There are three categories for it and it would mainly affect vehicle ownership:

<li>Government (including embassies and consulates)</li>

VEP-registered vehicles will be equipped with a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag for RM10, a significant reduction from the current RM20 fee for each entry of a foreign-registered private vehicle into Malaysia. Each VEP registration will be valid for five years.
How To Apply For The VEP In Malaysia?

To complete your VEP registration, follow these steps:

<li>Visit the official VEP website: <a href="https://vep.jpj.gov.my">https://vep.jpj.gov.my</a></li>
<li>Sign up by creating a profile. After registration, you will receive a confirmation email at your registered email address.</li>
<li>Click the URL link in the confirmation email, which will redirect you to the TCSens portal at <a href="https://vepams.jpj.gov.my">https://vepams.jpj.gov.my</a></li>
<li>Log in using the same user ID and password to complete your VEP registration. Before proceeding, download the Touch 'n Go app and register your eWallet account.</li>
<li>Submit the four required documents: certificate of entitlement, national registration identity card, motor insurance, and authorization letter.</li>
</ol>
You will receive an email notification once your application has been approved.

Once your application is approved, you can obtain your VEP RFID tag either by postage or by self-collection at a VEP collection centre managed by TCSens. If you choose self-collection, you must call ahead to make an appointment and bring your appointment slip with you. If you assign someone else to collect it, an authorization letter will be required.
Tag Acknowledgement &amp; Attaching The Tag To Your Vehicle

Once you've received the VEP RFID tag, you'll need to perform an acknowledgement via the TCSens portal. Click on the acknowledgement button corresponding to your vehicle number and insert the serial number for validation.
Following this, adhere to the guidelines provided and affix the VEP RFID horizontally on the left headlamp, the passenger side of the vehicle. Ensure that the tag is not placed on the curved portion of the headlamp.
Finally, take a photo of the installed VEP RFID tag alongside your registration plate and upload it to the TCSens portal at <a href="https://vepams.jpj.gov.my">https://vepams.jpj.gov.my</a>.
VEP RFID Covers Payments For Road Charge And Toll Fees Throughout Malaysia

One thing to note is that the VEP RFID is non-transferable and each tag is unique for each vehicle. If one were to change the ownership of the vehicle, it would automatically cease the validity of the VEP RFID tag said the Road Transport Department.
You must also update the following details whenever they expire:

<li>Road tax expiration date</li>
<li>Insurance information, including company name, policy number, and expiration date</li>
<li>Vehicle owner's passport number and expiration date</li>
<li>Vehicle owner's license information and expiration date</li>
<li>Driver's license information and expiration date</li>
<li>Change of vehicle ownership</li>
<li>The vehicle owner is also required to review and update the vehicle's details every five years.</li>
</ul>
Furthermore, if you enter Malaysia with an expired VEP RFID tag, you will incur a penalty of RM150.

In a move reminiscent of his controversial first-term policies, US President Donald Trump has signed a new presidential proclamation enforcing sweeping travel restrictions on citizens from 19 countries. The directive, which comes into effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on 9 June 2025, is framed as a national security measure but has already sparked intense backlash from human rights groups, refugee advocates, and foreign governments.
Full Ban on 12 Nations, Partial Restrictions on 7 Others

In a video statement released on X (formerly Twitter), Trump defended the ban by pointing to "deficiencies in vetting procedures" in the listed countries, such as weak ID verification systems, lack of criminal background checks, and high visa overstay rates.
&ldquo;We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States,&rdquo; he stated. Trump also referenced a recent violent incident in Boulder, Colorado &mdash; where an Egyptian national allegedly attacked a crowd with a petrol bomb &mdash; as a justification for tightening entry requirements. Notably, Egypt is not among the countries listed in the ban.
According to the White House, the countries subjected to full restrictions were determined to present a &ldquo;very high risk&rdquo; to US national security. A January 2025 executive order directed the State Department, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to assess which nations posed &ldquo;hostile attitudes&rdquo; toward the United States.
The resulting report cited several issues including:

Chad retaliated almost immediately by suspending the issuance of visas to US citizens, while officials in the Republic of the Congo condemned their inclusion as a &ldquo;misunderstanding&rdquo;. &ldquo;Congo is neither a terrorist state nor known for any terrorist affiliations,&rdquo; said government spokesperson Thierry Moungalla.
Somalia offered a more conciliatory tone. Ambassador Dahir Hassan Abdi affirmed Mogadishu&rsquo;s willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington to address security concerns.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello warned nationals against travelling to the US, describing it as "a big risk for anybody". He accused the US of persecuting Venezuelans &ldquo;for no reason&rdquo;, reflecting the deepening rift between Caracas and Washington.

The proclamation allows for the list of affected countries to be updated or revised based on future assessments. Existing US visas issued before 9 June 2025 will not be revoked. However, travellers from the listed countries with pending applications may now face rejection or delays.
As the United States heads into an election year, immigration is once again set to become a deeply polarising issue. Trump&rsquo;s latest move is expected to rally his base &mdash; but it also risks reigniting legal challenges, diplomatic rifts, and widespread protests reminiscent of 2017.

PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) will lay off around 10% of its workforce&mdash;impacting more than 5,000 employees&mdash;as part of a major restructuring exercise aimed at navigating prolonged profit declines, shrinking margins, and volatile crude oil markets.
The move, which was first initiated in February 2025, forms part of the state-owned energy giant&rsquo;s broader cost-cutting strategy to &ldquo;rightsize&rdquo; operations and build resilience amid an increasingly challenging environment for fossil fuel producers.

Announcing the decision at a media briefing on Thursday, 5 June, PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz confirmed that the workforce reduction will affect staff across all levels, including management. The restructuring reflects the growing urgency for the company to adapt to tighter margins and smaller resource fields. Tengku Taufik noted that in the past, PETRONAS could enjoy profit-before-tax margins of up to 40% when oil extraction was more straightforward. Tengku Taufik acknowledged that PETRONAS is under increasing pressure to meet its dividend obligations to the government. In 2024, the company accounted for approximately 10% of Malaysia&rsquo;s national revenue through dividends and taxes. With narrowing margins and declining output from mature fields, he warned that sustaining these contributions under current market conditions will be &ldquo;challenging.&rdquo;

While PETRONAS continues to entertain commercial proposals, he emphasised that this is part of the company&rsquo;s regular business review and not indicative of any planned withdrawal.
Ongoing Discussions with Sarawak over State Gas Role

This declaration also recognised the Sarawak government&rsquo;s appointment of Petros as the state&rsquo;s official gas aggregator, effective 1 March 2025.
Tengku Taufik noted that PETRONAS remains open to continued negotiations to strengthen cooperation with Sarawak and to ensure energy needs are met across the region.

While the coming months will bring uncertainty and job losses for many within PETRONAS, the restructuring aims to better position Malaysia&rsquo;s national oil company for the future. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has suffered a legal setback after the High Court in Kuala Lumpur dismissed his bid to seek constitutional immunity from a civil lawsuit filed by his former research assistant. The lawsuit, which accuses Anwar of sexual assault in 2018, is now set to proceed to trial on 16 June.

High Court Judge Roz Mawar Rozain ruled on 4 June that Anwar&rsquo;s application to refer eight constitutional questions to the Federal Court lacked merit. She said the questions failed to meet the required legal threshold under Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, stating they did not involve "genuine constitutional controversy" and were neither necessary nor relevant to the current proceedings.
&ldquo;There is no express constitutional or statutory immunity accorded to a sitting prime minister for private acts committed before assuming office,&rdquo; she said. She also emphasised that constitutional guarantees of equal protection under the law mean equal treatment, not exemption.
The court ordered Anwar to pay RM20,000 in costs to the plaintiff, Muhammad Yusoff Rawther. Anwar&rsquo;s legal team has since indicated plans to appeal the decision and request a stay of the upcoming trial.
The Lawsuit and Allegations

Anwar, 77, has strongly denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated attempts to discredit his leadership. He has also filed a countersuit against Yusoff. The plaintiff had previously lodged a statutory declaration and a police report in 2019, although the Attorney General&rsquo;s Chambers announced in January 2020 that it would not pursue criminal charges due to insufficient evidence.
In a statement following the High Court's ruling, Anwar maintained that his application was &ldquo;never about seeking personal immunity or escaping legal scrutiny,&rdquo; but rather about upholding the constitutional integrity of the Prime Minister&rsquo;s office. He argued that strategic litigation of this nature could disrupt governance and affect executive duties.
&ldquo;This matter concerns the integrity of our constitutional system and the need to ensure that high public office is protected from litigation that may be strategically timed, politically motivated, or institutionally disruptive,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I remain committed to the rule of law and will continue to discharge my responsibilities without distraction or compromise.&rdquo;

Malaysian police have confirmed that the decomposed body found at a construction site in Bangsar is that of Jordan Michael John Johnson-Doyle, a 25-year-old British software engineer who had been reported missing since 2 June.

The discovery was made during a search operation on 4 June, at a partially completed condominium along Lorong Maarof. The search was initiated after Johnson-Doyle&rsquo;s movements were traced to the area. Over 30 officers took part in combing the site, and at approximately 5pm, a body was found face-down in a partially submerged lift shaft at one of the still-under-construction blocks.
Tattoo Identification and Autopsy Results

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed that the body had been positively identified by Johnson-Doyle&rsquo;s uncle, based on a distinctive tattoo. A post-mortem conducted at University Malaya Medical Centre revealed that the cause of death was a chest injury sustained from a fall from height.
&ldquo;There were no signs of foul play or criminal elements at the scene,&rdquo; said Rusdi. &ldquo;The case has been classified as a sudden death.&rdquo;
The body, which was discovered with most of its clothing removed, was recovered at around 9.30pm on the day of the search and taken for forensic examination.
Last Known Movements Before Disappearance

Johnson-Doyle had been on a solo backpacking trip across Southeast Asia while working remotely for a United States-based tech company. He had arrived in Malaysia from Vietnam on 17 May and was believed to be staying at Robertson Residences in Bukit Bintang during his time in Kuala Lumpur.
His last known contact was on the night of 27 May, when he was seen attending a quiz night at Healy Mac&rsquo;s Irish Bar in Bangsar. He had sent a photograph from the bar to a friend, but after that, his phone went silent and his social media activity abruptly stopped. Concerned family members, unable to reach him, reported his disappearance to the authorities.
Staff at the bar confirmed his attendance that evening, but were unable to provide further details about his departure or movements afterward.
Public Urged Not to Speculate
