Malaysians are eagerly rallying to support our athletes, hoping to see our country win its first Gold medal.

As the world&rsquo;s attention focuses on the Olympics, it&rsquo;s important to remember that the Paralympic Games will also be taking place starting August 28. The Paralympics aim to promote human rights, development, and the ideals of humanity, showcasing athletes who push the limits of what&rsquo;s possible despite physical or mental disabilities.
However, controversy has arisen involving the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) and the Malaysian Para Swimming Association (Prepma). The spotlight has shifted to them after Walter Lee, father of national para swimmer Zy Lee Kher, questioned the selection process for the swimmers heading to the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
Who Is Zy Lee Kher?

Originating from Penang, 17-year-old Zy was born with three missing limbs&mdash;he has a fully functional left arm, a partially developed right arm, no right leg, and a left leg with only three toes. Despite these challenges, Zy&rsquo;s father, Walter, refused to label him as disabled and broke away from stereotypes by enrolling him in a regular school, where he grew up among friends who were considered "normal." To ensure Zy could stand alongside his peers, Walter provided him with prosthetic legs, enabling him to live a fulfilling life.
Walter's commitment to his son's development led Zy to start swimming at age six. Through his dedication and hard work, Zy began competing on the global stage by the time he was 13.

Zy has won six international medals, including two bronze at last year's Hangzhou Asian Para Games. His father, Walter, shared that Zy set an Asian record in 2023 and qualified for the 2024 Paris Paralympics in three events.
Unexpectedly, Zy&rsquo;s slots were reassigned to lower-ranked swimmer Imaan Aiman Redzuan. Zy competes in the S5 and SB4 categories (for physical impairments) and is ranked 7th in the 200m freestyle S5, 13th in the 100m freestyle S5, and 12th in the 100m breaststroke SB4. Imaan, in the S14 category (for intellectual impairments), is ranked 17th in the 100m backstroke. Despite qualifying for three events, Zy&rsquo;s spots have been given to Imaan, who has only qualified for one.

Given the facts, Zy and his father believe the path to securing medals was clear. Walter noted that, rather than sending Zy based on merit, Malaysian authorities allocated him a Bipartite slot (a wildcard entry system). They initially accepted this decision without protest, trusting the process.
A Bipartite slot allows athletes to participate without meeting qualification standards, which was unnecessary for Zy, as he had already qualified in three events. Despite this, Zy and his father sought clarification about his Paralympic status through calls and emails in May but received no satisfactory answers.
In July, the selection committee informed them that Zy had been replaced by another athlete. Both PCM and Prepma have stated that the selection for the Paris Paralympics was based on the potential to win medals for the country, and the Bipartite slot application was unsuccessful.

Frustrated with the result, Walter challenged the evaluation methods used by PCM and Prepma to assess an athlete's medal-winning potential. He claimed that Imaan's probability was calculated at 96.3% based on personal best times, while Nur Syaiful Zulkafli had a 95.5% probability for the Men&rsquo;s SB4 100m breaststroke. Zy&rsquo;s scores were reportedly lower, leading PCM and Prepma to rank him as the third choice.
Walter criticized this approach, questioning why probabilities were based on timing rather than ranking. He argued that this method contradicts International Paralympic Committee (IPC) guidelines, which recommend calculations based on rankings. Walter also suggested that PCM and Prepma were misapplying the IPC guidelines and failing to understand them fully.
Zy Makes Plea To Youth And Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh

In a final attempt, Zy made a personal appeal to Youth &amp; Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, expressing frustration that Prepma seemed intent on excluding him once his name was used for a Bipartite slot application. He argued that experienced coach Fumiyo and team manager Jennifer should have known that the IPC wouldn&rsquo;t grant a Bipartite slot to a top-10 ranked athlete, as such slots are rarely given to those ranked so highly.
"Seeing what has happened in the past few months has really shaken my belief. It feels like someone has taken something away from me that I&rsquo;ve been working on for my entire childhood. I feel very disappointed, being lied to and used,&rdquo; Zy stated.
He also noted that IPC regulations allow up to three athletes per event if qualified. He pointed out that the Chinese team has three swimmers in some events, while Thailand managed to place all five of their qualified swimmers, including one via a Bipartite slot.
Zy &amp; Walter Face Backlash From Paralympics Council

The council has taken disciplinary action against Walter and Zy for allegedly damaging its reputation, with Zy facing charges for breaching the National Sports Council's (NSC) athlete code of conduct.
Megat defended the charges, stating they aim to prevent athletes from acting independently without consulting the council. He also criticized Walter, an executive member at Prepma, for allegedly misusing his position and causing unnecessary controversy with World Para Swimming (WPS) without proper consultation.
&ldquo;NSC already has a code of conduct, and what Lee Kher said in the video was baseless. We evaluate athletes based on their timing, not their rankings, which aligns with WPS standards,&rdquo; Megat said.
He placed less blame on Zy and more on Walter for creating controversy without fully understanding the situation. Megat asserted that PCM and Prepma have always maintained transparency in their selection process and have not engaged in any dubious practices.

Her disappearance &mdash; abrupt, unexplained, and now entering its fourth week &mdash; has stunned the nation and triggered growing concern over the protection of witnesses and individuals involved in high-profile investigations.
Pamela was scheduled to give a statement that afternoon in relation to an ongoing probe involving money laundering and corruption. However, she never arrived. Despite police investigations, multiple witness interviews, and widespread media coverage, her whereabouts remain unknown. Her family alleges she may have been abducted just minutes from her destination.
A Routine Trip That Ended in Silence

At 1.57pm, Pamela sent what would be her final known message &mdash; a WhatsApp note to her lawyer stating she was on her way and estimated to arrive by 2.08pm. What happened in the next few minutes remains unclear.
By 2.30pm, her lawyer had become concerned when Pamela failed to arrive and could no longer be reached. Calls to her mobile phone went unanswered. WhatsApp messages remained undelivered. At 3.02pm, a missing persons report was filed at the Putrajaya police station. A second report followed the next day at the Seri Kembangan station.
Eyewitness Accounts and a Troubling Allegation

&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

The allegations include being struck by a thrown object while resting and having his motorcycle physically lifted and locked in a cage by a group of peers. The video includes short footage of the victim lying down and reacting as a white item is hurled at him.
&ldquo;I was shocked to find out what he&rsquo;d been through,&rdquo; said Masdo in the clip. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s beyond unacceptable. When the person being bullied is someone with disabilities, I consider the bullies absolute cowards.&rdquo;
He further called for immediate institutional action and warned that if GiatMARA failed to act, he would escalate the matter himself.
MARA Chairman Promises Stern Action

In response to the public uproar, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki released a statement confirming that an internal investigation would be reopened.
He said that all individuals involved in the alleged bullying &mdash; including the victim &mdash; would be summoned by GiatMARA Alor Gajah&rsquo;s management to provide statements and cooperate with the inquiry. Dr Asyraf said he had directed the agency&rsquo;s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Hamdi Ibrahim, to take immediate and comprehensive action.
&ldquo;Preliminary information suggests the incident may have stemmed from a case of rough joking among trainees during their earlier training sessions at GiatMARA Alor Gajah,&rdquo; he said in a Facebook post. &ldquo;However, MARA takes all allegations of bullying seriously, regardless of intent. There will be no compromise.&rdquo;
The trainees involved are reportedly now undertaking industrial training in welding technology and metal fabrication.

The chairman further outlined that this policy applies to all of MARA&rsquo;s educational and training institutions, including but not limited to the Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), GiatMARA centres, MARA Skills Institutes, MARA Colleges, Professional Colleges (KPM), Higher Skills Colleges (KKTM), MARA Poly-Tech Colleges (KPTM), as well as higher education institutions like the MARA Japan Industrial Institute (MJII), German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
He said the leadership across MARA&rsquo;s entire network of institutions understood his stance and were under strict instructions to act swiftly if bullying is confirmed.
The Case Was Previously Investigated in February, Say Exco
