Recently, a 17-year-old girl in Johor Bahru made a harrowing escape by jumping out of a moving car near the Perling toll plaza after noticing her male e-hailing driver had deviated from the expected route. The incident, which occurred around 5 p.m. on 11 August, quickly gained attention through a viral social media post.
According to the post, the Grab driver allegedly attempted to kidnap the girl by disabling his location tracking and switching his Grab app to offline mode, all while taking an unexpected route. In a state of sheer panic, the girl felt compelled to leap from the moving vehicle to save herself.
The post further urged other women to prioritize their safety by sharing their live location with family or friends when using e-hailing services, highlighting the importance of staying vigilant.
Driver And Girl Lodge Police Report Over The Incident

After the incident, both the passenger and the driver filed police reports. Johor Baru Utara police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, clarified that the situation arose from a misunderstanding when the e-hailing driver altered the route without informing his passenger, leading her to jump from the moving vehicle out of fear.
"We received a report on 11 August from a man, who was an e-hailing driver. He stated that he picked up a female passenger around 4:50 p.m. at Taman Seroja, heading towards Kip Mall in Tampoi," Singh said in a media statement.
He explained that due to ongoing road maintenance, the driver had to change their route, directing them towards Taman Perling to make a U-turn on Jalan Persisiran Perling. "When the passenger noticed the change in route, she panicked and jumped out of the moving car," he added.
Upon realising what had happened, the driver immediately stopped to assist her. However, by the time he reached her, bystanders had already come to her aid and taken her to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries to her knees, arms, and back.
Police investigations confirmed that there was no criminal intent involved in the incident, with Singh emphasising that it was purely a case of miscommunication.
Request E-Hailing Drivers Service To Improve Communication

Since the incident was a result of miscommunication, Valveer advised e-hailing drivers to enhance their communication with passengers, especially when alternative routes are required. He also urged the public to stay vigilant but to refrain from making hasty decisions, as this could endanger both themselves and others.
"If you encounter a suspicious or unexpected situation, it's best to communicate with the driver or the party involved to seek clarification. If you still feel unsafe, contact the police immediately," he said.
It's understandable that, at 17, the girl was genuinely fearful for her safety. However, her actions, while driven by fear, were highly dangerous and put her life at serious risk. In similar situations, it's crucial to assess the circumstances carefully before taking any drastic steps.

A fatal accident involving a Taiwanese man who fell onto the Light Rail Transit (LRT) tracks at Pusat Bandar Puchong has prompted renewed scrutiny over safety standards at Malaysia&rsquo;s public transport hubs. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has since instructed Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the LRT system operator, to accelerate the installation of platform screen doors across all LRT stations to prevent similar tragedies.
Evening Commute Turns Tragic

The victim, later identified as 63-year-old Chang Pao Shih from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, died on the evening of Tuesday, 3 June 2025, after reportedly falling onto the tracks at around 5.54pm. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 6.05pm and swiftly deployed a team from the Subang Jaya fire station.
According to Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the man was found unconscious beneath the train tracks and was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial confusion surrounded his identity and the circumstances of the incident, but authorities later confirmed his nationality and retrieved his passport from the scene.
CCTV Footage Points to Accident

Transport Minister Loke, speaking at a press conference, confirmed that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the incident unfolding, and that there were no indications of foul play.
&ldquo;A report was presented by Prasarana yesterday, and it was an accident whereby the person may not have been aware about the platform,&rdquo; he stated. &ldquo;Let the police do their investigation. The CCTV recording will be shared with the police so they can conduct a detailed probe.&rdquo;
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed to coordinate with the Taiwanese embassy to assist in notifying and supporting the victim&rsquo;s next of kin.
Safety Barriers Now a Priority

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve asked Prasarana to make the necessary arrangements. They are currently in the planning stage and we hope to push this initiative forward,&rdquo; Loke said, noting that the installation process will require substantial financial support.
&ldquo;To retrofit older stations with these doors will incur a huge cost and we will need additional budgets,&rdquo; he acknowledged. Nevertheless, the minister emphasised that improving commuter safety must remain a national priority.
Previous Incidents Sparked Earlier Warnings

Following the February incident, Loke announced that his ministry would explore the use of &ldquo;smart&rdquo; CCTV systems capable of detecting erratic or risky behaviour. However, the most recent fatality has added urgency to calls for more tangible infrastructure upgrades, particularly the installation of physical barriers.

News of Chang&rsquo;s death prompted an outpouring of sympathy from netizens, many of whom offered condolences to the victim&rsquo;s family. However, there was also significant anger directed at the authorities, particularly over perceived delays in implementing promised safety measures.
