We&rsquo;ve all seen headlines about violent acts committed by teenagers abroad, but it&rsquo;s unsettling to see one of our own Malaysian youths making international news for such behaviour. Malaysians are often seen as friendly and warm, yet stories like this remind us that sometimes appearances can be deceiving.
Recently, seventeen-year-old Malaysian student, Thomas Wei Huang, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the UK following a violent hammer attack on his dormmates at Blundell&rsquo;s School in Devon. In June 2023, Huang attacked two sleeping classmates, inflicting severe injuries, including skull fractures, broken ribs, and internal bleeding. One victim suffered a punctured lung due to the intensity of the assault.
In case you're curious, the school fees per year to attend Blundell's School could set one back around RM255,078.45 yearly. &nbsp;However, it may not cover all extras such as uniform costs, textbooks, examination fees, and optional trips or activities, which could incur additional charges.

When housemaster Mr. Henry Roffe-Silvester intervened to stop the attack, Huang struck him multiple times on the head, leaving him dazed and forcing him to retreat. The commotion drew the attention of another student, who immediately alerted the authorities.
During the trial, Huang claimed he was sleepwalking at the time of the attack, but evidence showed an obsession with violent fantasies and hammers, including a stash of hammers by his bed, which he said were for protection against a &ldquo;zombie apocalypse.&rdquo; Psychological experts debated his mental state, with some suggesting a form of "sleepwalking violence" and others arguing he was fully aware of his actions.
Premeditation And Public Danger

Despite pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, the Exeter Crown Court found Huang's actions to be premeditated. Huang was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years before any consideration for release.
Initially, Huang's identity was protected by a gag order, but the restriction was lifted, allowing media outlets to reveal his identity publicly. His sentencing follows the conviction of another Malaysian student in Britain, highlighting a series of high-profile cases involving Malaysian students abroad.
Another Student Convicted For Infanticide

In an unrelated case, 22-year-old Malaysian student Teo Jia Xin was convicted of murdering her newborn child while studying in the UK. Teo, who attended Coventry University, had concealed her pregnancy before giving birth in March 2024. Prosecutors revealed that Teo placed the newborn in a sealed plastic bag and hid the body in a cereal box inside a suitcase. Evidence presented in court indicated that Teo was aware the baby was alive when she sealed it, resulting in the infant's death.
These two troubling cases highlight the challenges Malaysian students can encounter while studying abroad, particularly when dealing with mental health struggles. Though both students now face life sentences, we hope they receive the support needed to address their mental health issues. Given their young age, perhaps the justice system will allow them a second chance at a better path forward in the future.

The demolition of a controversial four-storey building in Hulu Langat, believed to have been occupied by foreign residents including members of the Rohingya community, has been approved but is still awaiting funding from the Selangor state government.
Hulu Langat Member of Parliament Mohd Sany Hamzan said the operation, estimated to cost around RM600,000, cannot proceed immediately as several legal and administrative procedures must first be completed.
According to him, the Land Office has already submitted the necessary paperwork to the state government, and demolition works will only commence once the allocation is approved.
He added that the case has been raised repeatedly at district, state and federal levels, including discussions with the Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Council (NSC).
The MP also emphasised that enforcement agencies such as the Immigration Department have conducted multiple operations in the area over the years, although overcrowding in detention centres remains a major challenge, costing the government approximately RM90 per detainee per day.
Legal Procedures and Complex Constraints

At the same time, he urged the public to verify information with official sources, noting that several government bodies, including the Kajang Municipal Council and Land Office, have already issued statements on the matter.
Sany also highlighted the humanitarian aspect of the Rohingya issue, stating that unlike migrants from some other countries, repatriation for Rohingya individuals is far more complex.
&ldquo;If we arrest them, detain them and send them back, the outcome is death. That is the reality,&rdquo; he said, adding that the issue carries international implications and must be handled carefully.
He further called for cooperation from local communities and village leaders in reporting suspicious activities, while stressing that the matter requires a long-term, coordinated solution rather than piecemeal action by individual constituencies.

&ldquo;Many people are quick to level accusations without objectively examining the legal basis that governs any action authorities intend to take,&rdquo; he said.
According to him, overlapping responsibilities between different agencies often result in delays or assumptions that another department has already acted, creating confusion and inefficiencies.
He stressed that stronger inter-agency coordination is essential to prevent misinformation and public misunderstanding.
&ldquo;There are circumstances that require legislative reform, especially where jurisdiction between courts and administrative officers overlaps,&rdquo; he added.
Kamal also suggested that certain enforcement powers could be streamlined, proposing that local authorities such as mayors or district council presidents be given clearer authority to order demolitions directly, in order to speed up action against illegal structures.
However, he cautioned that transparency is equally important, noting that a lack of communication allows speculation and mistrust to grow.
&ldquo;Not every delay stems from incompetence or corruption. Sometimes the law itself limits what can be done,&rdquo; he said.
He also questioned why the matter had not been more prominently addressed earlier in Parliament by local representatives, suggesting that clearer explanations could have prevented public misconceptions.
State Government and Authorities Step In

Malaysians who are used to paying their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions over the counter will soon have to make the switch to digital alternatives.
Starting 1 July 2026, the EPF will officially close all contribution payment, or remittance, counters at its offices across the country as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise its services and encourage greater adoption of online platforms.
However, the agency has stressed that the closure only affects payment counters, with all other customer service counters continuing to operate as normal.
A Move Towards Digital Convenience

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a nationwide crackdown on foreigners who allegedly misuse tourist and student visas to operate businesses in Malaysia, warning that such activities could undermine local livelihoods and create unfair competition for Malaysian entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the Communications Ministry&rsquo;s monthly assembly in Putrajaya, Anwar said the government is increasingly concerned about foreign nationals entering the country on visitor or student passes before engaging in commercial activities, particularly within the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector.

The move reflects a broader shift towards data-driven enforcement, with authorities expected to utilise digital tools and artificial intelligence to track suspicious activity, monitor money flows and identify business networks that may be operating through proxy arrangements.

Experts also caution that prolonged abuse of immigration rules could contribute to an expanding informal economy while weakening regulatory oversight and economic sovereignty.
At the same time, observers emphasise that enforcement should distinguish between illegal operators and legitimate foreign investors, many of whom continue to play an important role in Malaysia&rsquo;s economic development through investment, innovation and job creation.
