A devastating flash flood and mudslide struck the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August 2026, sweeping through villages, roads, bridges and infrastructure and leaving hundreds of people unaccounted for.
Among those reported missing are 17 Malaysians, alongside hundreds of other foreign travellers and Nepali nationals. The disaster has triggered large-scale search and rescue efforts on both sides of the border, while authorities continue to warn of further flooding.

The disaster struck the mountainous Rasuwa district in northern Nepal, close to the border with Tibet.
A sudden surge of water, mud and rocks swept into the Bhote Koshi River, devastating areas including Syabrubesi and Timure. Homes, vehicles and bridges were washed away, while roads, communications and electricity infrastructure were severely damaged.
A major border crossing at Gyirong Port on the Tibetan side was also hit by a mudslide, cutting road access as well as communications and power links.
Dramatic footage from the affected areas showed torrents of muddy water carrying vehicles and debris, with bridges and buildings collapsing under the force of the flood.
What Caused The Flash Flood?

Initial reports suggested that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake may have triggered an avalanche of ice and rock, which then blocked the Lhende Khola river before sending a huge volume of water downstream.
However, further geological analysis has raised questions over whether an earthquake was actually responsible.
The US Geological Survey later said its analysis indicated that the seismic energy detected in the area was instead caused by a glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than an earthquake.
Experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development have similarly pointed to a rock-and-ice avalanche in Nepal that may have blocked the river and caused the cascading flood.
The exact sequence of events is still being investigated.
17 Malaysians Among Hundreds Missing

The Nepal Tourism Board reported that 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalis, had been reported missing from the affected areas.
The missing foreigners include 17 Malaysians, more than 100 Indians, 12 Britons, four South Africans, three Americans, an Australian and a Dutch national.
The Malaysian Foreign Ministry said its embassy in Kathmandu was coordinating with local authorities to locate affected Malaysians and establish their safety.
Because roads and communication networks in the region have been heavily damaged, authorities are facing difficulties confirming the whereabouts of those who remain uncontactable.
Families trying to trace Malaysian travellers have been advised to provide relevant passport and travel details to the Malaysian Embassy for coordination with authorities.
Rescue Efforts Hampered By Difficult Conditions

Nepal has deployed police, military personnel and rescue teams to the affected areas, but the terrain and weather have made operations extremely difficult.
Rescue helicopters have reportedly struggled to land in some of the worst-hit areas because of high water levels, poor visibility and continuing rain. Authorities are also moving residents living in low-lying and riverside areas to safer locations as they warn that another flood could occur.
The concern comes from a remaining blockage upstream, which experts believe could release another sudden surge of water if it collapses. China has also launched a major rescue operation around Gyirong Port, with hundreds of personnel and emergency vehicles deployed to search for missing people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an all-out effort to locate survivors and strengthen monitoring and early warning systems to prevent further disasters.
India And Other Countries Offer Assistance

The disaster has also prompted support from neighbouring countries.
India is coordinating with Nepal on rescue and relief operations and has deployed aircraft carrying emergency supplies and medical equipment. Helicopters have also been earmarked for rescue and evacuation efforts.
Other countries, including South Korea, have offered assistance as authorities work to account for their citizens in the affected region.
The scale of the disaster has also prompted flood alerts downstream in India's Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, as rivers flowing from the Himalayas continue to rise.
A Region Already Vulnerable To Floods

The Himalayan region regularly experiences floods and landslides during the June to September monsoon season, but experts say the growing threat of extreme weather is adding to the danger.
Scientists have warned that rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt and contributing to the instability of ice and mountain slopes.
The region has experienced similar disasters before. Last year, flooding along the Bhote Koshi River killed people and destroyed a bridge connecting Nepal and China, disrupting transport and trade.
Rescue Operation Continues
The full scale of the devastation is still emerging, with authorities working to verify the number of missing and dead.
For the families of the 17 Malaysians and hundreds of other missing travellers, the immediate priority remains locating their loved ones.
With roads destroyed, communications disrupted and another possible flood threat hanging over the region, rescue teams in Nepal and Tibet are continuing their efforts under extremely challenging conditions.

Marvel Studios is bringing one of its most complicated characters back into the spotlight with VisionQuest, an upcoming Disney+ series that explores Vision’s identity, his connection to Ultron and the meaning of family. Starring Paul Bettany and James Spader, the eight-episode series marks the conclusion of the television trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024.
Originally scheduled to premiere on 14 October 2026, Marvel has announced an early debut for the first two episodes on 13 October in the United States. For Malaysian viewers, that premiere date falls on 14 October local time. The series will release two episodes weekly before switching to a single episode for its final two instalments.
With returning characters, artificial intelligence and plenty of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) connections, here is everything you need to know about VisionQuest before watching.
Who Is Vision? A Quick Recap Of His Marvel Journey

Vision, played by Paul Bettany, is an android known as a synthezoid whose consciousness was created using a combination of Tony Stark’s AI assistant J.A.R.V.I.S., Ultron’s technology and the Mind Stone.
He first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), where he turned against Ultron and joined the Avengers. However, his story took a tragic turn in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), when Thanos removed the Mind Stone from his forehead, killing him. The events of Avengers: Endgame did not restore him to life.

Vision’s story continued in WandaVision, where Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, created an alternate reality in the town of Westview to cope with her grief. The Vision living inside this reality was a manifestation of Wanda’s powers rather than the original android.
Meanwhile, the government organisation SWORD rebuilt Vision’s original body into White Vision, stripping him of his memories and emotions. During the series finale, the two versions of Vision confronted one another, with the original Vision’s memories ultimately restored to White Vision.
White Vision then flew away, leaving his future uncertain.
That storyline leads directly into VisionQuest, where Vision has regained his memories but must work out what they mean without fully understanding the emotions attached to them.
What Is VisionQuest About?

Set around 2028, VisionQuest follows Vision as he attempts to find a new purpose after escaping those who wanted to turn him into a weapon.
He goes into hiding in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he works at a local pub while trying to understand human behaviour. Behind the scenes, however, he retreats into a virtual environment inside his mind called Mindspace, where several artificial intelligence programmes associated with Tony Stark remain active.
These include J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y. and E.D.I.T.H., each of whom assists Vision in different ways. The series explores how these digital personalities influence his understanding of humanity and whether possessing memories is enough to make someone truly human.
His quiet existence is disrupted when a bounty hunter named Paladin, played by Todd Stashwick, begins hunting him. The situation becomes more complicated when Paladin targets Tommy, a mysterious teenager who may be Vision’s son.
Vision must then decide what family means to him, even as he struggles to understand whether he can genuinely experience love, fear and attachment.
The series draws inspiration from classic Marvel comics, including the 1989 Vision Quest storyline and Tom King’s acclaimed Vision comic series from 2015. Both explore Vision’s identity and his attempts to understand what it means to be human.
Ultron Returns As Vision’s Most Complicated Family Member

One of the biggest talking points surrounding VisionQuest is the return of Ultron, played by James Spader.
First introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron was an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner to protect humanity. However, he concluded that humanity itself was the problem and attempted to destroy it.
Although his physical body was defeated, the series reveals that a portion of his AI consciousness survived within Vision’s mind.
Ultron now occupies a place in Mindspace, where he offers Vision advice that is often as manipulative as it is insightful. Their relationship forms a central part of the series, particularly as Vision attempts to understand his own identity and the kind of person he wants to become.
Marvel has described the story as exploring three generations: Ultron as a grandfather figure, Vision as a father and Tommy as a son. This creates a broader question about whether someone shaped by a troubled parental figure can break the cycle and become a better parent themselves.
The cast also includes T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, an android created by Ultron in the comics who eventually turned against him. Her role in the series remains largely under wraps.
Who Is Tommy, And Why Is He Important?

Tommy is another key character viewers should understand before starting VisionQuest.
In WandaVision, Tommy and his twin brother Billy were created as part of Wanda’s alternate reality. Both disappeared when the Hex collapsed, leaving their ultimate fates uncertain.
The story continued in Agatha All Along, which revealed that Billy’s soul had entered the body of William Kaplan. Using his magical abilities, Billy later helped place Tommy’s soul into another teenager’s body.
In VisionQuest, Tommy is portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica as an 18-year-old orphan who has recently left the foster care system in London. He survives by pickpocketing and experiences confusing memories of a family and a life he cannot fully explain.
Tommy also possesses super-speed abilities, reflecting his comic-book counterpart, Speed. His unexpected connection to Vision becomes increasingly important as the pair are forced to flee from those pursuing them.
Lauren Morais joins the cast as Lisa Molinari, Tommy’s partner in crime, while Todd Stashwick plays the relentless bounty hunter Paladin.

VisionQuest consists of eight episodes, with the first two arriving together before the series moves to weekly instalments in pairs.

What Should You Watch Before VisionQuest?

Although VisionQuest is designed to continue Vision’s story, its many references and returning characters mean some MCU homework will help.
WandaVision (2021) is the most important series to watch, as it explains the creation of White Vision, the restoration of his memories and the origins of Wanda’s twin sons.
Agatha All Along (2024) provides the missing details about Billy and Tommy, including how their souls came to inhabit new bodies. These events are directly relevant to Tommy’s role in the new series.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) introduces Ultron and Vision’s complicated origins. It also establishes the conflict that continues to shape their relationship.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) explains Vision’s original death and provides important context for his relationship with Wanda and the loss of the Mind Stone.
Finally, Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) is useful but less essential. It introduces E.D.I.T.H., Tony Stark’s augmented reality AI system, which becomes one of the digital personalities featured in Vision’s Mindspace.
Watching these titles should make the new series easier to follow, particularly for viewers who have not revisited the MCU’s earlier stories in several years.
Is VisionQuest Worth Watching?

Early reviews suggest that VisionQuest may appeal most strongly to dedicated Marvel fans. Its returning characters, comic-book references and exploration of artificial intelligence offer plenty for viewers who enjoy connecting the franchise’s different storylines.
However, some critics have found the series overly complicated, with its shifting layers of reality, digital consciousness and simulated emotions making it difficult to connect with the central father-and-son storyline. Others have praised its science-fiction approach while noting that it lacks some of the unusual charm and emotional immediacy that made WandaVision stand out.
Ultimately, VisionQuest takes Vision beyond his role as an Avenger and asks a more personal question: if memories can be restored and emotions can be simulated, what truly makes someone human?
For MCU fans, the series could provide a meaningful conclusion to the stories begun in WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along. Whether it delivers the same emotional impact as its predecessor remains to be seen, but Vision’s journey towards understanding himself is finally taking centre stage.

Marvel’s VisionQuest: Release Schedule, Storyline, Cast And What To Watch Before Disney+ Series

Malaysian badminton star Lee Zii Jia has applied for an interim injunction at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to restrict his father and sister from making certain financial and management decisions at his company, LZJ Management Sdn Bhd, while a legal dispute over its governance remains unresolved.
The application, filed on 2 July 2026, names his father, Lee Chee Hin, sister Lee Zii Yii, younger brother Lee Tao and LZJ Management as respondents. Zii Jia is seeking to prevent his father and sister, who are both directors of the company, from approving additional financial benefits for themselves or making major corporate decisions without prior court approval.
The dispute centres on the management of the company responsible for handling Zii Jia’s professional badminton career and commercial affairs. However, the application is being contested by the respondents, and the court’s final decision on the requested injunction has not been established.
Lee Zii Jia Seeks To Limit Financial And Management Decisions

Under the proposed interim injunction, Zii Jia wants to prevent Chee Hin and Zii Yii from approving directors’ fees, allowances, bonuses or other financial benefits for themselves beyond their existing monthly salaries while the legal proceedings are ongoing.
He is also seeking restrictions on several key corporate decisions, including the appointment or removal of directors, the appointment of a company secretary, the disposal of major assets, the issuance of new shares and changes to the company’s shareholding structure.
These decisions would require court approval if the requested restrictions are granted.
According to the court documents, Zii Jia holds a 90% stake in LZJ Management, while Zii Yii owns 9% and Lee Tao holds the remaining 1%.
The injunction application is registered under case number WA-24NCC-400-07/2026. It reflects an ongoing dispute over how the company should be managed and how authority over its financial and corporate affairs should be exercised.
Dispute Over Company Governance And An Extraordinary General Meeting

Besides seeking restrictions on his family members’ powers, Zii Jia has applied for a court order to convene an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to address the company’s management and governance.
In his supporting affidavit, he said an earlier attempt to hold an EGM on 22 December 2025 failed because the required quorum was not achieved. Zii Jia has argued that the company is facing a management and administrative deadlock, making court intervention necessary to resolve outstanding issues.
He wants the court to direct that the meeting take place within 14 days of the order, or within another timeframe determined by the court. He has also sought permission to issue and serve the meeting notice and appoint an independent chairman.
The proposed meeting would allow shareholders to discuss matters concerning the company’s leadership and administration, including the possible removal or appointment of directors and the appointment of a company secretary.
However, the respondents are opposing the application.
Lee Chee Hin Opposes Court Intervention

In a reply affidavit filed on 6 August 2026, Chee Hin disputed the need for court intervention, maintaining that LZJ Management had continued to manage matters relating to his son’s professional badminton career.
His response also referred to the company’s four-year agreement with sports brand Victor, which runs from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2028. He argued that the arrangement and its financial contributions were important to the company’s operations and its support for Zii Jia’s career.
The affidavits filed by the parties also address disagreements involving payments and the use of Zii Jia’s name and image. Zii Yii and Lee Tao have likewise challenged the allegations and the relief sought.
The competing positions remain subject to the court’s consideration, and the outcome of the injunction application has yet to be established.
LZJ Management Handles Zii Jia’s Professional Career

LZJ Management was established to oversee Zii Jia’s professional and commercial affairs after he turned professional and parted ways with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The company plays a role in managing sponsorships and other arrangements connected to the player’s career, making its governance and financial decisions central to the current dispute.
The case highlights the challenges that can arise when family members are also involved in managing a professional athlete’s business interests. However, the legal proceedings remain ongoing, and the parties’ respective claims have not been conclusively determined.
Despite the dispute, Zii Jia has continued competing internationally. He recently reached the men’s singles semi-finals at the Arctic Open in Vantaa, Finland, before losing to Denmark’s Anders Antonsen. Earlier in the tournament, he defeated France’s Christo Popov 21-11, 21-16 in the quarter-finals.
For now, the focus remains on the High Court proceedings, which will determine whether the requested restrictions and extraordinary general meeting can proceed as sought.

Ryt Bank customers can now make contactless payments using their Apple devices, following the launch of Apple Pay support for the bank’s Ryt Card on 6 October 2026. The update allows customers to add their card to Apple Wallet and pay in stores, online and through supported apps without needing to take out their physical card.
With this addition, Ryt Bank becomes the first digital bank in Malaysia to support both Apple Pay and Google Pay. The bank introduced Google Pay support in January 2026, giving Android users access to mobile payments before extending the service to Apple users.
The latest update offers customers more flexibility in how they pay for everyday purchases, from buying groceries and grabbing coffee to shopping online. It also introduces another convenient way to make payments while benefiting from the security features built into Apple Pay.
How Apple Pay Makes Everyday Payments More Convenient

Apple Pay allows customers to use compatible devices, including iPhones and Apple Watches, to make contactless payments at participating merchants. Instead of carrying a physical card, users can simply authenticate their payment on their device and hold it near a compatible payment terminal.
The service also works for online purchases and in-app transactions at supported merchants, allowing users to complete payments without repeatedly entering their card details.
For customers who frequently use contactless payments, adding a card to Apple Wallet can make everyday transactions quicker and more convenient. It is particularly useful when heading out without a wallet, as payments can be made directly through a compatible Apple device.
Customers who use Android devices can continue to access Google Pay with their Ryt Card, meaning Ryt Bank now supports both major mobile wallet platforms.
Apple Pay Security Features Protect Your Card Details

Beyond convenience, Apple Pay includes security measures designed to protect users’ payment information.
Each transaction must be authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID or the device’s passcode, helping ensure that payments are authorised by the device’s owner.
Apple Pay also uses a device-specific account number and a unique security code for each transaction, rather than sharing the actual card number with merchants. Apple states that card numbers are not stored on its servers, adding another layer of protection when customers make payments.
If an iPhone is lost or misplaced, users can also use Apple’s Find My service to mark the device as lost and suspend Apple Pay on it.
However, users should still protect their devices with a secure passcode and keep their banking applications updated.

Ryt Bank customers can add their Ryt Card to Apple Wallet through the bank’s app or directly through the Wallet app on a compatible Apple device.
Option 1: Through the Ryt Bank app

Ryt Bank Adds Apple Pay Support, Becoming Malaysia’s First Digital Bank To Offer Apple Pay And Google Pay

Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Chery Omoda 5 and halted new registrations following an incident in Johor Bahru where the SUV’s rear axle and both rear wheels reportedly detached from the vehicle.
Announced on 11 October 2026, the suspension will remain in place until technical investigations are completed and the potential safety risks are addressed. The incident occurred on 6 October along Jalan Pandan, near AEON Mall Tebrau City, with photos and videos subsequently circulating on social media.
The case has raised fresh concerns because a similar rear axle failure in April 2024 prompted Chery Malaysia to launch an inspection campaign involving 600 vehicles. Chery has now announced another recall covering affected C and H variants of the original petrol-powered Omoda 5, with inspections and necessary component replacements provided free of charge.

JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the suspension was a precautionary measure while the department investigates the incident and identifies potential safety risks.
Chery Malaysia has been instructed to identify potentially affected vehicles using component part numbers, production batches, Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and other relevant technical information. Vehicles identified as being at risk must be recalled for inspection and corrective action.
JPJ will also audit the Omoda 5’s production and assembly processes, as well as the relevant axle component supplier. The audit will examine manufacturing practices, quality control systems, welding inspection procedures and component safety standards.
The suspension will only be lifted after corrective and preventive measures have been completed and JPJ confirms that the identified safety risks have been adequately addressed.
Chery Malaysia Begins Recall Campaign

Chery Auto Malaysia has confirmed that it is working with JPJ to address the issue through a recall campaign covering affected Omoda 5 C and H variants.
Affected vehicles will undergo comprehensive inspections, and the relevant component will be replaced where necessary. Owners will not be charged for inspections or corrective work carried out under the campaign.
How To Check If Your Chery Omoda 5 Is Affected

Owners can check their vehicle’s recall status through Chery Malaysia’s official Product Update page by following these steps:

Find your VIN. The number is located at the top-left corner of the instrument panel, visible through the front windscreen. It may also be found on the hood, back door or underneath the driver’s seat.

Visit Chery Malaysia’s Product Update page. Navigate to the recall checker on the company’s official website.

Submit your VIN. Enter the number using uppercase letters, agree to the website’s terms and conditions and Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) notice, then submit the details.

Arrange an inspection. If your vehicle is affected, contact an authorised Chery service centre to arrange the necessary checks and repairs.

For assistance, owners can contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888 or email cherycareline@chery.my. The careline operates from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding weekends and public holidays.
Similar Rear Axle Issue Led To A 600-Unit Recall In 2024

The latest incident follows a similar case in April 2024, when a Chery Omoda 5 experienced a rear axle failure that prompted an investigation and a precautionary inspection campaign.
Chery previously attributed the issue to a calibration problem involving welding equipment at its component supplier’s facility. A worn welding tip had been replaced, but the equipment was reportedly not recalibrated properly afterwards.
The affected components were produced on 15 August 2023. Although 60 vehicles in Malaysia were identified as fitted with components from that production batch, Chery expanded its inspection campaign to cover 600 Omoda 5 units equipped with rear axle components manufactured between 14 and 17 August 2023.
However, it remains unconfirmed whether the latest incident in Johor Bahru is linked to the same welding issue. JPJ’s ongoing investigation will need to establish the cause before any connection can be confirmed.
Does The Recall Affect The Chery O5 Or Omoda E5?
Top: Omoda 5 EV ; Bottom: Omoda 5 Petrol Image via Soya Cincau
The recall concerns affected C and H variants of the original petrol-powered Chery Omoda 5. Owners should distinguish this model from the facelifted Chery O5 and the fully electric Omoda E5, as they use different rear suspension configurations.
Launched in Malaysia in July 2023, the original Omoda 5 uses a torsion beam rear suspension system. Its facelifted successor, marketed locally as the Chery O5, switches to a multi-link rear suspension setup. The fully electric Omoda E5 also uses multi-link rear suspension.
All three models are locally assembled at Inokom’s manufacturing facility in Kulim, Kedah. Chery has stated that its current production models are not affected by the latest recall campaign.
Nevertheless, owners should check their VIN through the official recall checker rather than rely solely on their vehicle’s appearance or model name.
What Omoda 5 Owners Should Do
With new registrations suspended and the technical investigation ongoing, owners of the original petrol-powered Omoda 5 should check their VIN and contact an authorised Chery service centre if their vehicle is identified as affected.
The cause of the latest rear axle failure has yet to be confirmed. JPJ’s technical audit and Chery’s recall campaign will help determine the extent of the issue and ensure that any affected vehicles receive the necessary corrective work before the registration suspension is lifted

JPJ Suspends Chery Omoda 5 Approvals, Halts New Registrations After Rear Axle Incident

Eight years after Crazy Rich Asians became a global box-office hit, the beloved franchise is officially returning with a new television series on HBO. The upcoming eight-episode drama will continue the story following the events of the 2018 romantic comedy, bringing several familiar faces back to explore the glamorous world of Singapore’s ultra-wealthy elite.
The returning cast includes Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng and Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young, Nick’s formidable mother. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, although HBO has yet to announce a release date or confirm where filming will take place.
The announcement marks a new chapter for the franchise after plans for a feature-film sequel remained in development for several years without moving into production.
Original Crazy Rich Asians Cast Reunites

The new HBO series will reunite four major cast members from the original film, allowing audiences to revisit the characters who helped make Crazy Rich Asians a cultural phenomenon.
Wu will return as Rachel Chu, a New York-based economics professor who discovers that her boyfriend, Nick Young, belongs to one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Golding reprises his role as Nick, while Chieng returns as his status-conscious cousin, Eddie Cheng. Yeoh will appear in a recurring capacity as Eleanor Young, whose disapproval of Rachel became one of the original film’s central conflicts.
Other familiar faces, including Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong and Nico Santos, have yet to be confirmed for the television adaptation.
The original film followed Rachel as she travelled to Singapore with Nick to attend his best friend’s wedding. Unprepared for the extravagant lifestyles, complicated family relationships and social expectations surrounding Nick’s family, Rachel found herself navigating a world where wealth and reputation carried considerable influence.
The film ended with Nick proposing to Rachel, setting the stage for the next chapter of their relationship. While HBO has not revealed the new series’ storyline, it is expected to continue exploring the characters and relationships introduced in the film.
Eight Episodes Instead Of A Movie Sequel

Rather than continuing the story through another feature film, the franchise is taking an episodic approach. The eight-episode format will give the creative team more time to develop its characters and explore the wider world established in Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will work alongside Kwan, original film director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, among other executive producers.
Lim described the project as a family reunion, expressing excitement about returning to Kwan’s fictional world.
She also highlighted how the series format would allow the team to explore the characters in greater depth than a single film could. The writers’ room is already working on the project, although specific story details have not yet been announced.
Kwan also welcomed the adaptation, saying that seeing his characters return in a television series would give their stories more room to develop. His original Crazy Rich Asians novel was published in 2013, followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017.
It remains unclear whether the HBO series will directly adapt material from the subsequent novels or introduce an original storyline inspired by the book series.
Jon M. Chu Says Returning Feels Like Coming Home

Chu, who directed the 2018 film and later helmed projects including In the Heights and the Wicked films, celebrated the announcement on social media.
Reflecting on the original movie’s impact, he said it had changed his life and described the cast as one of the most creative and entertaining groups he had worked with. He also expressed excitement about bringing the team together again after watching its members develop their careers over the past eight years.
Chu noted that audiences had continued to embrace the film, from hosting mahjong nights inspired by its scenes to revisiting it as a favourite during flights. He also joked that the announcement finally answered the question he had repeatedly received from fans: when the sequel would arrive.
The reunion brings back much of the creative team responsible for the original film, which helped bring greater visibility to Asian representation in mainstream Hollywood.
A Cultural Milestone Returns To The Screen

Released in 2018, Crazy Rich Asians was widely recognised for featuring an all-Asian principal cast in a major Hollywood studio production, at a time when Asian representation and the issue of whitewashing were prominent topics in the entertainment industry.
The romantic comedy performed strongly at the box office, earning more than US$239 million worldwide against a reported production budget of US$30 million. Its success also helped introduce international audiences to Singapore’s food, architecture, luxury hotels and cultural landmarks, including Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and Newton Food Centre.
Beyond its commercial performance, the film became a significant moment for Asian audiences who rarely saw their communities represented on such a scale in Hollywood romantic comedies.
With the upcoming HBO series, the franchise will have an opportunity to revisit its characters while expanding the stories and relationships that made the original film popular.
For now, fans will have to wait for further announcements regarding the plot, additional cast members and premiere date. With production expected to begin in 2027, the return of Crazy Rich Asians promises a longer look at the romance, family drama and extravagant lifestyles of the Young family.
