Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance

Malaysia is continuing to work with Indonesia to tackle forest and land fires at their source.
Syed Ibrahim said Malaysia formally offered assistance on 9 September, including water bombing, amphibious aircraft and cloud seeding. Indonesia has agreed to accept assistance to tackle fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, with deployment arrangements coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and relevant agencies.
Malaysia is also exploring a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia on environmental protection and climate change. Proposed cooperation includes preventing forest and peatland fires, sharing hotspot data, managing high-risk areas and coordinating early intervention.
Malaysia has also proposed a Sustainable Haze Fund under ASEAN to support regional fire prevention, alongside science diplomacy and the bloc&rsquo;s ambition to achieve a haze-free region by 2030.
During the parliamentary discussion, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid questioned how quickly assistance could be deployed while fires continued, noting that haze can cross borders regardless of whether the fires have been declared a national disaster.
Singapore&rsquo;s Law Offers a Possible Model

A 16-year-old student was arrested after allegedly attacking a teacher with an axe at Tunku Putra-HELP International School in Kuching, Sarawak, on 21 October, leaving the teacher injured and prompting a police investigation.
The incident occurred at around 8am when the teacher reportedly attempted to confiscate the weapon from the student. Police later confirmed that the weapon involved was an axe or hatchet, contradicting earlier reports circulating online that described it as a penknife.
The case has raised renewed concerns about school safety in Malaysia, particularly following several recent incidents involving serious violence at educational institutions.
Teacher Injured While Attempting to Confiscate Axe

In its statement, Tunku Putra-HELP International School said the teacher was in a stable condition and recovering well, with no critical injuries reported. The victim reportedly sustained a cut to the hand during the incident.
School staff managed to restrain the student and escort him to the principal&rsquo;s office, where he remained under supervision until the authorities took over the case. The student&rsquo;s parents were also informed.
The school confirmed that students in the affected classroom managed to evacuate safely and that no other injuries were reported.
Police Investigating Axe Attack and Firecrackers

Acting Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak confirmed that the student had allegedly brought an axe and firecrackers onto the school premises.

Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including how the student brought the items into the school and what led to the confrontation.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon or dangerous object, and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957, relating to the possession of explosives.
The student was later released on police bail, according to subsequent police updates, as investigations continued. Authorities have not yet publicly established the motive behind the incident.
Livestream of Attack Circulates Online
