Asian food is probably some of the best food out there to exist as it&rsquo;s pack full of flavour and is more unique in taste than most foods out there.
But when we show our food to some westerners, it seems that they can&rsquo;t accept out food but to be fair to them, their food is just plain bland.

Recently, a study had been conducted by researchers at the University of Adelaide on the effects of consuming Bak Kut Teh while having prescription drugs. Unfortunately for our friends in Klang and fellow Bak Kut Teh lovers, the study says that if consumed with prescription drugs, it can lead to liver failure.

Professor Robert Byard says that the study was done on four packet mixes of Bak Kut Teh. It was then mixed with the liver cells and it was alleged that the ingredients killed up to 83% in one concentrated soup formula.
&ldquo;People have been warned for some time that herbal medicines and therapies may have harmful side effects that can include significant liver damage. &ldquo;In rare cases, this has required transplantation and even led to death,&rdquo; he said.
Additionally, he claims that the University of Adelaide were the first to prove that foods containing herbs may be toxic to liver cells.

Content of Bak Kuh Teh to be labelled more accurately
Now, if you&rsquo;re one to eat Bak Kuh The, you may know that the dish has a variety of ingredients and different styles of mixes.
In the four packets tested by the lab, it stated that they had all showed similar levels of toxicity.
Contents of the packets:

<li>#2: Goji berries, ginseng, bark, and dried mushrooms</li>
<li>#3: Polygonatum odoratum, ligusticum chuanxiong, codonopsis pilosula, cinnamomum cassia, angelica sinensis, illicium verum, piper nigrum, and Eugenia caryophyllata</li>
<li>#4: Spices, pepper, and salt</li>

On a slight positive note, Byard did advice that those with underlying liver problems or those on medication should be aware of the dishes side effects when consuming it.
&ldquo;If unexpected liver damage is encountered at autopsy, information on possible recent ingestion of herbal food preparations should be sought, as routine toxicology screening will not identify the active components. Liver damage may, therefore, be caused not only by herbal medicines but possibly herbal products contained in food.&rdquo;
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners slam the study
TMC practitioners have picked up on the viral story and had voiced out their thoughts. But when I say voice out, I mean that they had condemned the study by the University of Adelaide.
Professor Dr. Ng Po Kok who is the president of Federation of Chinese Physicians and Acupuncturists Association of Malaysia (FCPAAM) stated that the research was completely baseless and had no real facts.

&ldquo;Unless irresponsible merchants mix banned drugs into the mix, there is no risk of liver or kidney failure caused by traditional Chinese medicine.&rdquo;
He even pointed out that the researchers had failed to point out the formulation that was studied and which ingredient posed a risk. For those who didn&rsquo;t know, all the ingredients in Bak Kut The are essentially the same as traditional medicine which includes angelica, wolfberry and yu zhu which helps in blood circulation.
If you want to take Chinese medicine along with Western medicine in between intervals, there&rsquo;s no harm in it at all.
Plus, the people of Klang have been eating Bak Kut Teh for the longest time and no one seems to have any problems so far. Only if one were to overeat it and the fatty content of the pork can have severe health problems to an individual.

Education and innovation were named as key pillars of the city&rsquo;s success, with local universities ranked among the top 50 globally and a remarkable 7.37 patents granted per 10,000 residents, highlighting a &ldquo;steady pipeline&rdquo; of new ideas. Singapore also enjoys high digital literacy, with 55 per cent of citizens possessing digital skills and over 63 per cent fluent in a foreign language &mdash; a reflection of its global connectivity.

What was meant to be a joyous getaway turned into a harrowing experience when several individuals fell violently ill after indulging in a lok lok feast at Genting Sempah, Pahang. The aftermath saw multiple guests suffering from severe food poisoning, with some requiring hospitalisation, leaving the group frustrated and deeply concerned.

She and a group of 36 friends had rented villas for a three-day, two-night retreat near the Pahang-Selangor border. During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

&ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.

This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.
