Malaysians are perplexed by the rating of their regional cuisine received on yet another food ranking list. This time, Taste Atlas' top 50 list of the world's best cuisines place Malaysian food at number 39.

The highlights of our regional cuisine were nasi lemak, curry puffs, laksa, satay celup, roti pisang, and others, according to the list made public on Friday, December 23 by the experience travel guide with a base in Croatia.&nbsp;

Malaysia received a pitiful score of 3.99 despite the many culinary delicacies this nation has offered. They are tied for 38th place with Lebanon and Bosnia and Herzegovina (40th).
The Internet was buzzing following the release of the contentious list because many people felt that it did not accurately reflect the global perception of foreign cuisine. Some people even threw a tantrum in the comment section, expressing their thoughts and opinion about this scoring. Some are disappointed, and some are unsure.&nbsp;

Well, it's understandable if people start to think like this when they don't see their countries on the top list.&nbsp;Naturally, given that Malaysia has long been renowned for its exquisite and diverse cuisine, many Malaysians were not overly pleased with the rating.
Despite providing well-seasoned and spicy traditional cuisine that tourists throng to our country sample, many were unhappy that Malaysia scored lower than several European countries.
Some online users conjectured that the list's creators couldn't take spice and, as a result, didn't rank the nations that are known for their highly-spiced cuisine favorably. Here are some of the logical opinions netizens posted, reacting to Taste Atlas' scorings.&nbsp;

There's nothing we can do to change the list. Even throwing tantrums and being mad at the specific party won't change anything. What we have to do is to understand people's palates, everyone has different preferences and favorites. Maybe some people are allergic, or they can't take several cuisines due to religious restrictions or their own decisions. Or they are just biased. Lmao.&nbsp;

Malaysia Ranks 39th By TasteAtlas, How Are We Supposed To React? 

Malaysia&rsquo;s real wages have deteriorated drastically over the past four decades, leaving today&rsquo;s workforce with significantly reduced purchasing power, former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim warned in a recent interview with Sinar Harian. He remarked that many Malaysian graduates are now trapped in low-income jobs despite the country&rsquo;s economic growth, and are increasingly unable to meet basic life milestones such as home or car ownership.
Recalling his own experience, Muhammad said he earned RM1,300 upon entering the job market in 1984. Today, a typical fresh graduate earns between RM2,000 and RM3,000 monthly&mdash;a marginal increase in nominal terms that doesn&rsquo;t reflect the sharp rise in living costs. When adjusted for inflation&mdash;assuming a conservative annual rate of 5%&mdash;today&rsquo;s graduates should be earning closer to RM7,000 to RM8,000 to match the purchasing power of their 1980s counterparts.
&ldquo;In real terms, salaries today are only a third of what they used to be,&rdquo; he said, adding that if current trends continue, today&rsquo;s young people may never enjoy the same quality of life his generation did.
The Rise of the Low-Income Graduate

Quoting recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Muhammad pointed out that around 40% of university graduates today earn less than RM2,000 per month in their first job. He believes this is a clear indication that the country&rsquo;s education and economic systems are not aligned with the demands of a competitive, modern workforce.
&ldquo;Without major reforms in our education and economic frameworks, we are condemning our youth to a future dominated by low-skilled, low-paying jobs,&rdquo; he said. He warned that Malaysia continues to lag behind other nations that were once on par with or even behind Malaysia in the 1960s, including Taiwan, South Korea, China, and Japan&mdash;all of which now enjoy far higher standards of living due to sustained structural reform.
Foreign Labour Suppressing Wage Growth

As of 31 December 2024, there were 16.78 million workers in the country, with 2.37 million or roughly 14% of them being foreign workers.
These foreign workers primarily fill 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) jobs in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture, food services, and domestic work. While these jobs are often shunned by locals, the influx of low-cost labour from countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal has created wage suppression for Malaysians in similar roles.
&ldquo;When employers can hire workers cheaply, they have no incentive to raise wages for locals. This affects our citizens directly, particularly those in the B40 segment,&rdquo; Muhammad explained.
A Growing Brain Drain: Nurses, Labourers, and the Search for Better Pay

Malaysia is not only failing to retain its skilled workforce&mdash;it is also losing talent to neighbouring countries with better wages. Muhammad highlighted that many local nurses are now migrating to Singapore, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE, where they can earn two to four times more than they would at home.
For example, JobStreet data shows that a nurse in Malaysia earns between RM2,700 and RM3,400 a month, while in Singapore, the salary ranges from RM11,000 to RM13,000. Even Saudi Arabia offers nearly RM7,000 per month.
Beyond white-collar professionals, Muhammad noted an increase in Malaysians crossing into Singapore to perform menial work. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just brain drain&mdash;it&rsquo;s now even low-skilled drain,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;If we don&rsquo;t address this soon, Malaysia may one day become a labour-exporting country, with our children working as maids or labourers abroad.&rdquo;
Income Reclassification Misses the Bigger Picture
In response to the government&rsquo;s recent proposal to update income classifications&mdash;changing the B40, M40, and T20 system to B20, M50, and T30 based on consumption data&mdash;Muhammad said the new categorisation risks masking the real challenges of wage stagnation and cost-of-living pressures.
He argued that income-based benchmarks remain critical, as consumption patterns can be misleading, particularly when driven by debt or necessity. &ldquo;If you use the older income definitions, the B40 group probably now encompasses 60% of the population, not just 40%, due to post-COVID economic strain, low savings, and wage stagnation.&rdquo;
GDP Growth Is Not the Only Measure of Progress

He noted that at international forums such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, discussions in developed countries have shifted from GDP to employment outcomes. &ldquo;The real question they ask is: what kinds of jobs are being created? That&rsquo;s where Malaysia needs to start focusing,&rdquo; he added.
Urgent Reforms Needed to Avoid Long-Term Decline
Despite the grim outlook, Muhammad said Malaysia still has time to reverse course. He pointed to the remarkable growth trajectories of East Asian economies that once had lower per capita incomes than Malaysia but have since surged ahead through long-term reform in education, technology, and governance.
&ldquo;We cannot continue benchmarking ourselves against regional peers who are also struggling. We must aim higher,&rdquo; he said.
He concluded with a warning: &ldquo;Without a bold and decisive push for structural change, we risk raising a generation that is poorer than the last, unable to afford homes, education, or healthcare, and forced to look overseas for dignity and opportunity.&rdquo;

The allegations include being struck by a thrown object while resting and having his motorcycle physically lifted and locked in a cage by a group of peers. The video includes short footage of the victim lying down and reacting as a white item is hurled at him.
&ldquo;I was shocked to find out what he&rsquo;d been through,&rdquo; said Masdo in the clip. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s beyond unacceptable. When the person being bullied is someone with disabilities, I consider the bullies absolute cowards.&rdquo;
He further called for immediate institutional action and warned that if GiatMARA failed to act, he would escalate the matter himself.
MARA Chairman Promises Stern Action

In response to the public uproar, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki released a statement confirming that an internal investigation would be reopened.
He said that all individuals involved in the alleged bullying &mdash; including the victim &mdash; would be summoned by GiatMARA Alor Gajah&rsquo;s management to provide statements and cooperate with the inquiry. Dr Asyraf said he had directed the agency&rsquo;s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Hamdi Ibrahim, to take immediate and comprehensive action.
&ldquo;Preliminary information suggests the incident may have stemmed from a case of rough joking among trainees during their earlier training sessions at GiatMARA Alor Gajah,&rdquo; he said in a Facebook post. &ldquo;However, MARA takes all allegations of bullying seriously, regardless of intent. There will be no compromise.&rdquo;
The trainees involved are reportedly now undertaking industrial training in welding technology and metal fabrication.
&ldquo;Zero Tolerance&rdquo; Policy on Bullying Across All MARA Institutions

The chairman further outlined that this policy applies to all of MARA&rsquo;s educational and training institutions, including but not limited to the Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM), GiatMARA centres, MARA Skills Institutes, MARA Colleges, Professional Colleges (KPM), Higher Skills Colleges (KKTM), MARA Poly-Tech Colleges (KPTM), as well as higher education institutions like the MARA Japan Industrial Institute (MJII), German-Malaysian Institute (GMI), Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM), and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
He said the leadership across MARA&rsquo;s entire network of institutions understood his stance and were under strict instructions to act swiftly if bullying is confirmed.
The Case Was Previously Investigated in February, Say Exco

All students involved were called in, statements were recorded, and those responsible apologised directly to the victim,&rdquo; Rahmad said. &ldquo;The student wasn&rsquo;t injured, and he has since resumed his training without interruption.&rdquo;
He added that while the viral video has revived public interest, the case had been closed months ago following internal resolution.

As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

This incident sheds light on a concerning issue regarding food safety standards and hygiene practices among mobile food vendors. &ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
The Need for Stricter Hygiene Regulations
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.
Authorities should take proactive measures by increasing inspections and enforcing stricter penalties for food vendors found guilty of negligence. Incidents like this highlight the importance of holding businesses accountable to ensure that consumers are not left vulnerable to foodborne illnesses.
