<p>The world is currently facing an issue. No, it isn&rsquo;t the usual climate change issue that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has been complaining about, but it&rsquo;s the issue of the shortage of food.</p>
<p>According to the World Food Programme, there are 349 million people across 79 countries who are facing acute food insecurity. This is also a rise of 200 million people in comparison to the pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The main cause of food shortage would vary from country to country as there are issues with conflict, poverty, economic issues, hyperinflation which raises the prices of goods and environmental issues such as drought and floods.</p>
<p>But what if we told you that the issue could likely be addressed sooner than expected?</p>
<p><strong>Singapore To Trial Protein Powder Made Out Of &lsquo;Thin Air&rsquo;</strong></p>
<p>Singapore regulators have approved a powder made from microbes which could potentially substitute meat.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><img src="https://r2.myc.my/8da7916d7ca37362c332514ea1d78e357b0483207696b29893fbbd6c88e1bd3c" /><br />Yes, that&rsquo;s made out of Solein!</em></p>
<p>The company Solar Foods is actually from Finland and they are a start-up that creates &ldquo;food out of thin air&rdquo;. The substance is a golden powder that looks like turmeric that&rsquo;s said to revolutionise the food industry as it will deliver a protein that will have a delicate umami flavour. The crazy bit is that it is &lsquo;made of air&rsquo;, microbes and solar energy.</p>
<p>Introducing Solein. The protein powder contains dietary fibre, fat and even the nutrients that&rsquo;s set to provide a basis for meat alternatives such as lentils, milk or soy. Solein contains up to 65-70% protein, 5-8% fat, 10-15% dietary fibre and 3-5% mineral nutrients. For those concerned about how this protein is made, don&rsquo;t worry as the whole process does not harm any nor require animals or even photosynthetic plants.</p>
<p><strong>How Is This Achieved?</strong></p>

<p>According to co-founder Pasi Vainikka, he says that the production closely resembles the fermentation process of making beer or wine. The bacteria feed on carbon dioxide and dissolved hydrogen and nitrogen which later form amino acids, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins.</p>
<p>Carbon dioxide and water are harvested from the air via a process called direct air capture and an electrolysis process will happen to split the molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. From there, the microorganisms will grow and react with the gases in the bioreactors and produce Solein.</p>

<p>After that is achieved, access water will be removed and it will be dried into the protein powder. The good thing about the powder is that it is not harmful to animals and is efficient to make as it does not require many chemicals and only uses 10 litres of water to create 1KG of protein.</p>
<p><strong>When Is It Available?</strong></p>
<p>Singaporeans will be the first to try it as regulators were quick to approve it. It will first be offered in selected restaurants in Singapore as the city is dubbed as &ldquo;the perfect hub&rdquo; to test it in.</p>
<p>However, the commercialisation of the product will not be available in the country till 2024 despite its approval. This is cause the Solein factory is currently being built in Vantaa, Finland and there are production capability issues as the company can currently only produce 5KG per week.</p>
<p><strong>Could This Be The Saviour Of The Chicken Shortage In Singapore?</strong></p>

<p>According to a report by FMT, Singapore imports 34% of their chicken from Malaysia and prior to the import ban to help regulate the stock of chicken, they also imported chicken from Brazil (49%) and the US (12%) before adding Indonesia into the list.</p>
<p>Despite the shortage of meat, Singaporeans are already consumers of non-meat meals and plant-based food with 7% of its population identifying themselves as vegetarians. Vainikka says that Solein can be used as protein source alternatives such as dairy and meat and it can also raise the protein content of bread, drinks, snacks and spreads.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff0505;"><em>Now, this is pretty interesting. Perhaps with the help of Solein, Singapore will have better food than Malaysia (or maybe not). Jokes aside, we have to be pretty thankful for modern technology and hope that this product can potentially solve the food shortage issue worldwide.</em></span></p>
