Char kuey teow is indeed one of the Asian cuisines favoured by many, whether Singaporeans or Malaysians. But when we order a plate of this dish, not all of us would like to include bean sprouts because, for some of us, it is not to our liking.

Recently, a Singaporean diner named Steven Wong was shocked by the additional charge of 50 cents when he requested &ldquo;no bean sprouts.&rdquo; He told the puzzled incident to <a href="https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/might-well-pick-them-out-myself-diner-baffled-bukit-panjang-hawkers-50-cent-charge-remove">Asia One</a> on September 26, Tuesday when he was aware of a sign in Mandarin at a stall named &lsquo;Wu Fu coffee shop&rsquo; located in Fajar Shopping Centre whereby additional ingredients like seafood, egg, and beansprouts would be for S$2 (~RM 6.88), S$1 (~RM 3.44), and S$0.50 (~RM 1.72).

However amusing it was, the confusing part is that you are still being charged an extra 50 cents (~RM 1.72) for the removal of bean sprouts, but why? Logically, when an ingredient is removed, there shouldn&rsquo;t be an extra charge. But in this case, the 50-year-old female owner explained with her justifications that they only have 3 woks at their stall, and normally, they cook about 4 to 5 portions at once. So, when a customer&rsquo;s order is without beansprouts, they ought to make a new batch for them. With that, it consumes a lot of their time as well as the energy spent.

Therefore, this clearly indicates that preparing bean sprouts truly eats up a lot of time when there are customers who demand to not have bean sprouts for their char kway teow. 
Besides selling fried char kway teow, the owner, Madam Goh, had 20 years of experience in cooking carrot cake, oyster omelettes, and fried bee hoon. 
Her stall has been operating in Fajar Shopping Centre for two months and she shared her experience that she did encounter a customer who ordered three packets of it &ndash; the first was pure noodles, the second was with pure kway teow, followed by the third with pure rice noodles. As such, the customers behind would need to line up in a long queue while awaiting their dish to be readily served.

Despite the extra charge seeming reasonable from the owner&rsquo;s point of view, nevertheless, there are Singaporean customers like Steven who found it ridiculous that he felt it was not worth paying the extra price. He furthered on by saying that he would rather pick out the bean sprouts by himself than have his 50-cent pocket money gone. 
Are Singaporeans trying to be more &lsquo;kiasu&rsquo; nowadays?

Another customer named Tan agreed that the price should remain the same when a customer requests to exclude bean sprouts. However, Tan in an understanding manner explained that the reason behind the surcharge is due to them cooking it in bulk and when a customer wants to remove bean sprouts, they will be required to cook it separately at different times. 
Regardless, Goh mentioned that the list of additional charges has been listed ever since the stall opened. So, it is up to the customers&rsquo; preferences on how they would like their money to be spent, and blaming the owner is like pointing fingers at others in regard to their own displeasure. She added that displaying the price list is a way of making things easier for them as well as for customers.

A catastrophic aviation disaster unfolded on Thursday, 12 June, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Flight AI171, bound for Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 individuals, including 217 adults, 11 children, two infants, and a crew of 12. The aircraft plummeted into a residential area, crashing directly into a hostel attached to a medical college in the Meghani Nagar neighbourhood during lunchtime. Among the deceased were hostel residents, including medical students, doctors, and their families.

Only One Survivor Pulled from the Wreckage

In a rare miracle, one passenger survived: a British national of Indian origin named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. Seated in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit, Ramesh was able to escape the burning wreckage. He sustained multiple injuries but remained conscious and coherent when transported to hospital.
&ldquo;Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,&rdquo; Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from his hospital bed. &ldquo;When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance.&rdquo;
Footage taken after the crash showed Ramesh bloodied and limping as he was helped into an ambulance. Police later confirmed he had managed to jump from the aircraft through the emergency exit, and that he remains the only known survivor.
Devastation on the Ground

The destruction was not limited to those on board. At least 24 people on the ground perished when the aircraft struck the building. Many others were injured. Witnesses described the crash as sounding like a bomb explosion, and some felt the ground shake as if during an earthquake.
&ldquo;My son is safe, and I have spoken to him,&rdquo; said a woman named Ramila, whose son had just returned to the hostel for lunch. &ldquo;He jumped from the second floor, so he suffered some injuries.&rdquo; Another local, Poonam Patni, recounted the horror: &ldquo;When we reached the spot there were several bodies lying around and firefighters were dousing the flames. Many of the bodies were burned.&rdquo;
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims. Authorities have asked families of the deceased to provide DNA samples for identification due to the severe burns suffered by many victims.
Cause of Crash Still Unknown
The aircraft had only just departed Ahmedabad&rsquo;s runway when it issued a Mayday call. Moments later, it vanished from radar. CCTV footage showed the plane struggling to climb before falling rapidly and disappearing from view, followed by a massive fireball rising from behind residential buildings.

Air traffic control confirmed the Dreamliner took off at 1.39pm and lost contact shortly after. The flight tracking website Flightradar24 reported that the plane&rsquo;s signal was lost less than a minute after take-off. Notably, video analysis suggested the landing gear was still down, which aviation experts noted as unusual for that stage of flight.
US aerospace safety consultant Anthony Brickhouse remarked: &ldquo;If you didn&rsquo;t know what was happening, you&rsquo;d think the plane was on approach, not take-off.&rdquo; The exact cause remains unknown, but mechanical failure or pilot error has not been ruled out.
First Crash for Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Three of the British victims were identified as Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa, and their young daughter, Sara. Gatwick Airport has set up a special reception centre for relatives of passengers.
Investigation Underway

Tragedy In Ahmedabad: Over 240 Dead In Air India Crash, British Man Sole Survivor

What began as a suspected break-in at a family home in Bukit Rambai, Melaka, during the early hours of 12 June, has now been confirmed as a deeply troubling domestic tragedy. A 51-year-old single mother, Vernita Boon (also reported as Wen Qiu Yan in some sources), and her 21-year-old eldest son, Lim Boon Kai, were found brutally stabbed to death in the living room of their home in Taman Rambai Mutiara.
Initial reports suggested a robbery, but police have since revealed that the perpetrator was not an external intruder. Instead, the horrific attack was allegedly carried out by Boon&rsquo;s second son, a 17-year-old schoolboy, who is believed to have been driven by pent-up resentment stemming from constant academic pressure.
Early Morning Horror: From Bedroom to Bloodshed

When he refused the suspect&rsquo;s command to leave the house, he was also stabbed but managed to escape. He was later found bleeding outside the home and is currently in stable condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Melaka Hospital.
Premeditated Violence, Not a Crime of Passion

Police believe the attack was not spontaneous but carefully premeditated. CCTV footage from the neighbourhood reportedly captured the suspect&rsquo;s movements, including his efforts to dispose of evidence. The 17-year-old is said to have purchased the folding knife several days prior to the attack.
When officers arrived, the teenager was found sitting outside the house in a dazed state. He has since confessed to the killings and is currently in custody, facing two counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Investigations confirm he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
Underlying Motive: Academic Pressure and Emotional Distress

Neighbours told police that arguments between Boon and her children were a regular occurrence and had grown more intense in recent weeks. It is believed the older brother also contributed to the pressure, urging the suspect to focus more on his studies.
