Do you recall the times when you completed your secondary education, and you eagerly anticipated a break before commencing college or university? Those were the days, but regrettably, it wasn't the case for everyone. Some students were required to participate in the National Service Training Programme (PLKN).
This program was initially introduced in Malaysia in 2004 but was later abolished and substituted with a youth leadership program during the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2018 due to its substantial operational expenses.
PLKN To Come Back With New Training Programme

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has revealed that the training program will be reintroduced, lasting for 45 days, during which trainees will undergo training at 13 military camps and 1 police camp nationwide.
"We are considering bringing back PLKN, but with a fresh approach rather than the old format, which resembled more of a summer camp," he stated in the Dewan Rakyat. He believes that this new approach to PLKN can reduce costs from RM500 million per year to not more than RM100 million per year.
PLKN 3.0 To Have 2 Phases

When outlining the new program structure, Phase 1 will be conducted at the school level and will involve Form Four students. It will primarily concentrate on enhancing the existing uniform units as part of co-curricular activities in schools.
In the 2nd phase, there will be a 45-day training program scheduled to take place after the students have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations. This extended camp will primarily focus on military-style identity-building. The new program is also planning to incorporate reference training programs similar to those held in Korea and Singapore.
The government's objective for PLKN 3.0 is to yield positive outcomes. Following the completion of the 45-day training, the trainees will be prepared to enter the workforce and potentially join government agencies such as the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), and the police force, among others.

"We believe that PLKN serves the purpose of instilling patriotism in our youth, but we also aim to create a more cost-effective framework," expressed the Defence Minister.
He went on to elaborate that the revised approach has the potential to cut costs by utilizing existing military bases and deploying military personnel as instructors at these facilities.
As of now, specific details regarding PLKN 3.0 have not been released, and it remains uncertain whether the program will be mandatory for all students or only randomly selected groups, as was done in the past. However, in the long term, this revival can contribute to instilling patriotism and nurturing disciplined and high-quality youths for Malaysia's future.
At least the program is now 45 days in duration, compared to the previous three-month program. Moreover, it's worth noting that the national service program is not mandatory, unlike in countries like Singapore or South Korea, where even K-pop stars can't evade it (except for individuals like League of Legends Esports pro, Faker, who won a gold medal for the country and is now exempted from it).
