Traditionally, the definition of youth commonly spans from 18 to 30 years old. However, our country has deviated from this norm, considering individuals above 30 as still falling within the youth category. In a recent development, the Minister of Youth and Sports declared a pivotal change slated to take effect from January 1, 2026. According to this announcement, the maximum age for individuals to be classified as youth will be capped at 30, aligning with the implementation date of the Youth Societies and Youth Development (Amendment) Act 2019 (Act A1602).

The amendments, enacted through a collaborative effort between the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM), encompass various changes. Notably, these include lowering the age limit for youth, restricting youth society office bearers to individuals between 18 and 30 years old, and shortening the term for the head of youth society from six to four years.

The effective date of this change has been officially documented, as published on the Attorney-General&rsquo;s Chambers website on November 20, 2023. The Youth and Sports Ministry, in recognizing the importance of widespread awareness, is actively informing all stakeholders associated with youth affairs about the impending enforcement of these amendments. This effort was emphasized during a press conference of the National Youth Consultative Council (MPBN) held at the International Youth Centre (IYC), Cheras.

Minister Hannah highlighted that this adjustment in the age limit aligns with the National Youth Policy and is consistent with international norms. She pointed out that other countries such as Indonesia (aged 16 to 30), the Philippines (aged 15 to 30), Thailand (aged 15 to 24), South Korea (aged 9 to 24), and Australia (aged 12 to 24) have similar definitions of youth.

Simultaneously, Minister Hannah underscored the formation of a Joint Committee, led by her deputy Adam Adli Abd Halim. This committee will engage in discussions regarding transition programs and strategies aimed at empowering leadership and enhancing the membership of youth organizations. A comprehensive framework for the transition plan is expected to be collaboratively prepared with relevant stakeholders in the first quarter of 2024, marking the commencement of the transition process.

In a separate development, Minister Hannah disclosed that the Cabinet has greenlit a significant initiative: the allocation of RM5 million annually, commencing this year, for administrative assistance to both MBM and its associated entities, in accordance with Act 668. This financial support is aimed at fortifying the governance and operational capacities of youth organizations.
"This strategic allocation will empower MBM and its affiliates to actively and effectively implement a wide array of youth programs," affirmed Minister Hannah.
In the end, the youth age limit does not stop us from being youthful as age is merely a number.
