Gurmit Singh is currently in Malaysia promoting his new movie, "The Chosen One," and his comedy show "Laugh Die You." While in Kuala Lumpur, he met with local food content creator Daniel Liew (@danieldineskl) to review Malaysia's national dish, Nasi Lemak, at Mali&rsquo;s Corner in Setapak.
While waiting in line, Daniel asked Gurmit if he preferred Nasi Lemak in Malaysia or Singapore. Without hesitation, Gurmit responded that he prefers Malaysian Nasi Lemak, leaving Daniel visibly surprised. Gurmit emphasized his preference by saying, "You see, no hesitation ah!" Before diving into his plate of Nasi Lemak, which left a lasting impression, Gurmit also took the opportunity to talk about his upcoming comedy show.

Aside from enjoying one of the best nasi lemak he's ever had, Daniel also engaged Gurmit in a quick-fire question game, asking him to choose which country has the better dish. The 59-year-old actor confessed that Malaysia boasts superior Nasi Lemak, Hokkien Mee, and even Chicken Rice&mdash;though he noted his favourite chicken rice stall in Singapore had closed down.
However, when it came to Bak Kut Teh, Chili Crab, and Char Kuey Teow, Gurmit gave the edge to Singapore. He specifically highlighted a Singaporean stall known for its distinctive "wok hay" style Char Kuey Teow.

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has officially announced his resignation from the Cabinet, ending his tenure as Malaysia&rsquo;s Minister of Economy. The lawsuit, brought by four animal rights activists, has drawn national attention and stirred public debate about the treatment of strays and the responsibilities of local authorities. Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing the plaintiffs, praised the court&rsquo;s ruling as a critical step forward.
&ldquo;This is a huge win for animal rights in Malaysia generally and a positive first step towards obtaining justice for Kopi, who was murdered in cold blood,&rdquo; he told reporters following the decision.

Kopi was a familiar figure in the Besut district, known to many residents and animal lovers for her calm and affectionate demeanour. Her popularity soared in March 2024, after a video went viral on social media showing her gently playing with a stray kitten. The video, uploaded by one of her feeders, Abby Razali, garnered widespread attention and led to a wave of online affection.
But that public goodwill turned into collective outrage when news broke that Kopi had been shot dead during a stray dog culling operation carried out by the Besut District Council. The shooting occurred in the early hours of 6 October 2024, reportedly around 1.30am.
According to Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, one of the plaintiffs, several residents were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigating, they observed three council officers driving around in a pick-up truck. Shortly after, Kopi was found dead from gunshot wounds. Her death, initially revealed via a post on the &ldquo;My Forever Doggo&rdquo; Instagram account, prompted widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Legal Grounds: Alleged Breach of Animal Welfare Law

Shashi Kumar &mdash; are contending that the use of firearms to kill the dog and the unnecessary suffering inflicted on her contravene Sections 29(e) and 30(1) of the Act.
Section 29(e) prohibits causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, while Section 30(1) forbids the killing of animals using a firearm, except under specific conditions outlined in Section 30(2). These exceptions include approval by a veterinary authority, instances where an animal poses imminent danger to human life, or where such action is necessary to control the spread of disease.
The plaintiffs are therefore seeking a declaration from the court that the use of firearms in this case was not legally justified, and that the authorities acted beyond the bounds of the law.
Challenging Local By-Laws
Beyond the immediate question of Kopi&rsquo;s death, the case also seeks to address a broader legal conflict between federal and local regulations. The activists are challenging the legality of the Besut District Council&rsquo;s Dog Licensing By-Laws 1990, specifically Sections 9(1) and 9(2), which empower council officers to shoot licensed or unlicensed dogs if no owner can be located.
The plaintiffs argue that these by-laws are incompatible with the stricter protections afforded by the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that supersedes local legislation. They assert that allowing council officers to indiscriminately kill strays undermines national legal standards and sets a dangerous precedent.
Government and Council&rsquo;s Defence

A statement issued by the Besut District Council on 13 October 2024 maintained that the actions taken during the culling operation were lawful. However, this justification has failed to appease critics, who argue that even if procedures were followed, the procedures themselves may be unlawful under federal law.
A Moment of Reckoning for Animal Welfare in Malaysia
The case has galvanised animal rights supporters across the country and is being closely watched by legal experts, animal advocacy groups, and members of the public alike. Many see it as a test of Malaysia&rsquo;s commitment to upholding the protections enshrined in the Animal Welfare Act.

What was meant to be a joyous getaway turned into a harrowing experience when several individuals fell violently ill after indulging in a lok lok feast at Genting Sempah, Pahang. The aftermath saw multiple guests suffering from severe food poisoning, with some requiring hospitalisation, leaving the group frustrated and deeply concerned.

She and a group of 36 friends had rented villas for a three-day, two-night retreat near the Pahang-Selangor border. During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

This incident sheds light on a concerning issue regarding food safety standards and hygiene practices among mobile food vendors. Joey voiced her apprehension, questioning how many more unsuspecting patrons might have suffered similar cases of food poisoning from the same vendor without realising the source.
&ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
The Need for Stricter Hygiene Regulations
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.
