Remember when bubble tea dominated the streets of Malaysia, particularly in SS15 Subang? Now, it's the coffee industry's turn to shine. Over the past few years, we've seen a surge of new coffee chains emerging.
From the expansion of local favourites like ZUS Coffee and Gigi Coffee to popular clothing brands and local entrepreneurs opening coffee shops within their stores or even from the trunks of their cars, the coffee culture in Malaysia is booming. This surge is giving Starbucks some serious competition, especially amid the current boycott.

Chinese Coffeehouse Luckin Coffee To Open In Malaysia

According to reports, Luckin Coffee is set to open its first outlet in Malaysia through a local partner listed on Bursa Malaysia, marking its entry into our local coffee market. This move is part of Luckin Coffee's ambitious expansion plan, which will unfold over the next five years. The Edge also reported that a letter of intent is expected to be signed soon, with a master agreement finalized by July 2024.
For those unfamiliar, Luckin Coffee was established in Beijing in 2017 and has quickly become a major player in the Chinese coffee market. Known for its extensive network of stores and aggressive growth strategy, Luckin Coffee aims to make high-quality coffee convenient and accessible to everyone in China. Currently, the chain boasts over 18,000 stores in China and operates 32 outlets in Singapore, its only other international market.
Luckin Coffee has gained substantial popularity due to its affordability and the convenience of its technology-driven service model, which allows customers to order via an app and enjoy quick delivery services. The brand has made a significant footprint in China, rivalling international chains like Starbucks in both reach and revenue.

In 2023, the company went viral after introducing its Jiangxian-flavored latte, a unique blend of coffee and the Chinese spirit baijiu. The drink's distinctiveness and popularity led to the sale of over 45 million cups by the end of the year, generating sales exceeding RMB 900 million (~RM 585 million).
Though the drink is not halal (for obvious reasons), it certainly gives other chains a run for their money with its unique offerings.

In addition to their Jiangxiang-flavoured latte, Luckin Coffee offers several signature must-try drinks. Their Coconut Latte, blending coconut milk with coffee, provides a refreshing taste. The Big Cheesy Latte, incorporating cream cheese, delivers a unique flavour reminiscent of cheesecake. Another popular choice is the Creamy Dreamy Latte, celebrated for its rich, evaporated milk-like creaminess.
Will The Chain Do Well In Malaysia?
Given the coffee chain's significant success in the Chinese domestic market, experts have mixed opinions about Luckin Coffee's potential entry into Malaysia. On the positive side, the chain could perform well due to its affordability and unique menu, which offers coffee lovers and those with a sweet tooth a variety of dessert-like drinks that stand out from other offerings.

However, some experts believe that Luckin Coffee might struggle to find success in the Malaysian market. Homegrown chains like ZUS Coffee and Gigi Coffee have been thriving, especially as they fill the gaps left by the boycott of Starbucks amid the Palestine-Israel genocide.
In addition to local competition, Luckin Coffee will also face challenges from other established international coffee and caf&eacute; operators already operating in Malaysia, who have a head start in the market.
Admittedly, another coffee chain in Malaysia wouldn't hurt, especially one like Luckin Coffee with its unique drink offerings. This could signal a further decline for Starbucks, a brand once dismissed as a "cheap imitation" of the coffee giant, now poised to be a formidable competitor.

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has officially announced his resignation from the Cabinet, ending his tenure as Malaysia&rsquo;s Minister of Economy. In a statement released on 28 May 2025 and echoed in a social media post the same day, Rafizi confirmed that his resignation will take effect on 17 June 2025. He will begin utilising the remainder of his annual leave starting immediately, which will run until 16 June.
&ldquo;I have submitted my resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,&rdquo; Rafizi wrote. &ldquo;This resignation takes effect from 17 June. Beginning today, I will be on leave until then.&rdquo;

He will be on leave from 29 May until the day before his departure.

He also failed to defend his position as Setiawangsa PKR chief during the party&rsquo;s divisional elections last month.

Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing the plaintiffs, praised the court&rsquo;s ruling as a critical step forward.
&ldquo;This is a huge win for animal rights in Malaysia generally and a positive first step towards obtaining justice for Kopi, who was murdered in cold blood,&rdquo; he told reporters following the decision.

Kopi was a familiar figure in the Besut district, known to many residents and animal lovers for her calm and affectionate demeanour. Her popularity soared in March 2024, after a video went viral on social media showing her gently playing with a stray kitten. The video, uploaded by one of her feeders, Abby Razali, garnered widespread attention and led to a wave of online affection.
But that public goodwill turned into collective outrage when news broke that Kopi had been shot dead during a stray dog culling operation carried out by the Besut District Council. The shooting occurred in the early hours of 6 October 2024, reportedly around 1.30am.
According to Dr Kartini Farah Abdul Rahim, one of the plaintiffs, several residents were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigating, they observed three council officers driving around in a pick-up truck. Shortly after, Kopi was found dead from gunshot wounds. Her death, initially revealed via a post on the &ldquo;My Forever Doggo&rdquo; Instagram account, prompted widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.
Legal Grounds: Alleged Breach of Animal Welfare Law

Shashi Kumar &mdash; are contending that the use of firearms to kill the dog and the unnecessary suffering inflicted on her contravene Sections 29(e) and 30(1) of the Act.
Section 29(e) prohibits causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals, while Section 30(1) forbids the killing of animals using a firearm, except under specific conditions outlined in Section 30(2). These exceptions include approval by a veterinary authority, instances where an animal poses imminent danger to human life, or where such action is necessary to control the spread of disease.
The plaintiffs are therefore seeking a declaration from the court that the use of firearms in this case was not legally justified, and that the authorities acted beyond the bounds of the law.
Challenging Local By-Laws
Beyond the immediate question of Kopi&rsquo;s death, the case also seeks to address a broader legal conflict between federal and local regulations. The activists are challenging the legality of the Besut District Council&rsquo;s Dog Licensing By-Laws 1990, specifically Sections 9(1) and 9(2), which empower council officers to shoot licensed or unlicensed dogs if no owner can be located.
The plaintiffs argue that these by-laws are incompatible with the stricter protections afforded by the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that supersedes local legislation. They assert that allowing council officers to indiscriminately kill strays undermines national legal standards and sets a dangerous precedent.
Government and Council&rsquo;s Defence

A statement issued by the Besut District Council on 13 October 2024 maintained that the actions taken during the culling operation were lawful. However, this justification has failed to appease critics, who argue that even if procedures were followed, the procedures themselves may be unlawful under federal law.
A Moment of Reckoning for Animal Welfare in Malaysia
The case has galvanised animal rights supporters across the country and is being closely watched by legal experts, animal advocacy groups, and members of the public alike. Many see it as a test of Malaysia&rsquo;s commitment to upholding the protections enshrined in the Animal Welfare Act.

What was meant to be a joyous getaway turned into a harrowing experience when several individuals fell violently ill after indulging in a lok lok feast at Genting Sempah, Pahang. The aftermath saw multiple guests suffering from severe food poisoning, with some requiring hospitalisation, leaving the group frustrated and deeply concerned.

She and a group of 36 friends had rented villas for a three-day, two-night retreat near the Pahang-Selangor border. During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. However, her efforts were met with denial and deflection. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.
A Wider Food Safety Concern

This incident sheds light on a concerning issue regarding food safety standards and hygiene practices among mobile food vendors. Joey voiced her apprehension, questioning how many more unsuspecting patrons might have suffered similar cases of food poisoning from the same vendor without realising the source.
&ldquo;If this particular lok lok truck had been operating at a pasar malam, how many more people would have gotten food poisoning? Would they also blame it on other food and let the matter go?&rdquo; she asked.
She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
The Need for Stricter Hygiene Regulations
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter food safety regulations to safeguard public health. Food truck operators must be held to high hygiene standards in food handling, storage, and preparation to prevent such harmful occurrences.
Authorities should take proactive measures by increasing inspections and enforcing stricter penalties for food vendors found guilty of negligence. Incidents like this highlight the importance of holding businesses accountable to ensure that consumers are not left vulnerable to foodborne illnesses.
