For ages, Malaysians have regarded Penang as a culinary paradise. Whenever someone plans a trip up north, Penang is a top vacation choice due to its diverse food offerings, ranging from hawker stalls to charming cafes.

As a renowned local and international food hub, Penang's culinary reputation is largely due to its cherished recipes that have been passed down through generations. However, there's a growing concern. The island's popularity has led to the hiring of foreigners to prepare these traditional dishes, resulting in a loss of authenticity. To address this, an upcoming ban will prevent foreigners from cooking 13 of Penang's most iconic dishes at hawker stalls.
13 Penang Dishes To Be &lsquo;Banned&rsquo; From Foreign Cooks
To preserve the treasured recipes, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will implement a ban on foreign cooks in all hawker stalls, food courts, and coffee shops starting in 2025. According to MBPP councillor Tan Soo Siang, the proposal is currently in the draft stage and awaits approval at the next council meeting.

The proposal is currently 90% complete, and once approved, it will be incorporated into the city council by-laws to become enforceable. However, Tan Soo Siang noted that the process will take some time to finalize.
&ldquo;Our target is to enforce this in the beginning of next year,&rdquo; she said.
What Are The List Of Food Banned &amp; What Caused It?

Currently, the ban applies exclusively to 13 types of local hawker food, which are:

Tan Soo Siang explained that the ban was due to numerous complaints from locals concerned about the quality of local food prepared by foreigners hired to run hawker stalls in privately owned food courts, hawker centres, and coffee shops.
"Ratepayers have questioned why we were not taking action, so we decided to extend this ban to privately owned hawker centres, food courts, and coffee shops," she stated.
The state government initially introduced the ban on foreign cooks for all MBPP-owned hawker centres and food courts in 2014, and it has been implemented since 2016. Now, this ban is extending to privately owned establishments. However, MBPP assures that the ban will not affect cafes, hotels, restaurants, or franchises that offer similar hawker foods on their menus.
Selangor Considering To Follow In Penang&rsquo;s Footsteps

Following news of Penang's proposed ban on foreign cooks at hawker stalls, Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim announced that the State Government is considering a similar ban. However, he acknowledged the challenge of enforcing such a rule in Selangor, given its population of over 7 million.
To address this, the Selangor State Government plans to consult with Penang on their implementation process. They will assess whether the rule could be effectively enforced in Selangor or if a different approach might be necessary.
Admittedly, there are only two possible outcomes: on the positive side, our food heritage will be safeguarded, but on the downside, many business owners may face long-term struggles. 
Perhaps a more feasible approach could involve requiring businesses to obtain a special license from the council. As we await the outcome of the ban, it's worth noting that if it has been successfully implemented at MBPP hawker centres since 2016, it might be more manageable to enforce on the island.

Malaysia is once again celebrating a landmark moment in badminton history as national shuttlers Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani officially become the world's top-ranked men&rsquo;s doubles pair, according to the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on 27 May 2025. This milestone marks the first time a Malaysian men's doubles duo has ascended to the coveted No.1 position in nearly a decade.
A Return to the Summit After Almost a Decade
Goh and Nur, known affectionately by fans as FeiDin, now sit atop the global rankings with 91,090 points, surpassing Denmark&rsquo;s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who dropped to second place after failing to defend their title at the recently concluded Malaysia Masters. The Danes were dethroned following their semi-final loss to fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

While official tickets were priced as high as RM999, resale prices surged to RM3,000 or more &mdash; with screenshots showing some scalpers demanding an additional RM900 &ldquo;top-up&rdquo; with no room for negotiation.
One viral post on X (formerly Twitter) showed a conversation where a ticket reseller openly admitted to using a &ldquo;bypass&rdquo; method to access the site ahead of everyone else. &ldquo;Cut the queue &mdash; skipped the stick man in the waiting list. Meaning, they didn&rsquo;t queue at all. Just went straight into the website and checked out,&rdquo; the fan explained, referencing the visual queue interface used during the sale.

Organiser Silent as Fans Demand Accountability
At the time of writing, Star Planet Malaysia has not issued any official response to the ticketing backlash. The silence has only fuelled further outrage from Malaysian VIPs, many of whom have supported G-Dragon and BIGBANG for years and feel betrayed by the lack of fairness and transparency in the process.
Fans have called on the organiser to immediately investigate the situation and take action against scalpers, bots, and bypass users. Some are also urging G-Dragon&rsquo;s management and tour team to take notice and reconsider how ticketing for future stops is handled.
Calls for Reform in Malaysia&rsquo;s Concert Ticketing
As complaints poured in, a larger conversation has reignited around Malaysia&rsquo;s lack of regulation against ticket scalping and bot abuse. Others have suggested using identity-linked e-tickets that cannot be transferred or resold, or setting aside a quota strictly for Malaysian IP addresses to ensure locals have access to events held on home soil.

G-Dragon’s KL Concert Marred By Scalpers And Ticketing Chaos As Malaysian Fans Cry Foul

Two men have been charged in Kuala Lumpur with using counterfeit police summons slips designed to deceive the public, amid growing anxiety over a spate of incidents involving fake or misleading documents placed on car windscreens. The case has taken on national attention due to a concurrent viral incident involving similar-looking notices tied to a marketing campaign.
On 26 May 2025, Tan Kok Ho, 43, and Denise Tan Ying Chyuan, 47, appeared in two separate Magistrates&rsquo; Courts and pleaded not guilty to jointly using forged documents that imitated the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) &lsquo;Notice to Appear&rsquo; summons (Form 170A).
The charges relate to incidents at two separate public parking areas&mdash;one outside a shopping mall in Bukit Bintang on 10 May, and another at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on 11 May. In both cases, the forged notices were allegedly placed on vehicle windscreens with the intention of misleading the public into believing they were official summonses issued by the police.

&ldquo;She looked terrified. You could see it in the way she moved, her expression &mdash; she was clearly in trouble,&rdquo; he recounted. &ldquo;The baby was swaddled only in a towel, and she had just a plastic bag with her.&rdquo;
Shortly after, Shamsul received a call from his cousin who lives nearby, reporting that a woman with a baby was hiding in the darkness behind a car. He gathered several surau members and rushed to the scene.
&ldquo;There she was, crouched behind a vehicle in the dark. When I called out to her, she looked like she might run. Then she said in a soft voice, &lsquo;Please don&rsquo;t chase me away.&rsquo; I was on the verge of tears,&rdquo; he said.

Shamsul calmly assured her that they meant no harm, only help. Gently coaxing her to follow him, he brought her into the surau where she was given a safe space to sit and rest. It was clear to everyone that she was still in her confinement period and extremely weak.

During their stay, they noticed a well-known lok lok (skewered food) truck serving guests at a neighbouring villa. Intrigued by the sight, they decided to book the same service for their celebration the following evening, paying RM2,000 for a meal meant for 40 people.
From Feast to Food Poisoning in Hours

The meal commenced at 6 PM on 1st February, and the group eagerly tucked in, expecting a delightful dining experience. However, just four hours later, disaster struck. More than ten people in the group began suffering from extreme vomiting and diarrhoea&mdash;undeniable signs of food poisoning. As the night progressed, the severity of the symptoms escalated, and by morning, two members had to be rushed to the hospital for intravenous drips, while others sought treatment at nearby clinics.
The repercussions of the incident went beyond health issues. Several group members were forced to take sick leave from work, while children attending international schools had to miss classes. The financial burden from medical expenses, combined with lost productivity, only added to their distress.
A Struggle for Accountability

Determined to seek justice, Joey contacted the food truck company, requesting a full refund of RM2,000 and additional reimbursement of RM3,375 for medical expenses incurred by the group. The company refused to take responsibility, instead shifting the blame onto the driver, claiming that he had accepted the booking independently without official company authorisation.
Joey was not convinced by this explanation. She had personally witnessed the driver calling the company to confirm the booking before proceeding. Adding to her suspicions, she pointed out that the food truck that arrived for their event was different from the one they had initially seen at the neighbouring villa.
In a further attempt to absolve itself, the company suggested that the food poisoning might have resulted from something the group had consumed earlier in the day. However, Joey quickly dismissed this claim. She explained that the group had split into five separate clusters throughout the day, each eating different meals&mdash;with some even skipping lunch entirely&mdash;yet every single person who ate the lok lok that evening fell ill.

She did not hold back in criticising the company&rsquo;s handling of the situation, calling their response &ldquo;irresponsible&rdquo; and highlighting the gravity of food poisoning incidents.
&ldquo;Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. I am sharing this publicly to put pressure on the business because of their irresponsibility and lack of concern for hygiene. I can accept the financial loss, but what I want is empathy,&rdquo; she wrote.
