If you&rsquo;re a fan of nasi lemak, chances are you&rsquo;ve heard of the popular Nasi Lemak Wanjo in Kampung Baru, KL.
Known for their flavourful nasi lemak with a wide range of side dishes, they&rsquo;ve also gained some notoriety for charging a fee to dine in the air-conditioned section. Recently, the restaurant went viral after a netizen shared a post criticizing the surcharge, arguing that it was unfair.
However, it turns out the restaurant isn&rsquo;t in the wrong for implementing this fee.

The controversy started after a post went viral on X (formerly Twitter), where the account @MALAYSIAVIRALLL criticized Wanjo Nasi Lemak for adding an extra charge for customers dining in the air-conditioned section. Reports suggest that the restaurant charges RM1 per adult for seating in the closed-off, air-conditioned area.
Notably, Wanjo does offer a non-air-conditioned dining area at no extra cost. However, with Kuala Lumpur&rsquo;s intense heat and the eatery often crowded, many customers opt for the air-conditioned section despite the fee.
As the debate heated up online, many patrons and netizens expressed frustration over the charge, considering it unreasonable. This led to numerous reports filed with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN), claiming that it&rsquo;s unlawful to charge customers extra simply for sitting in an air-conditioned room.

KPDN Clarifies The Issue; They Are Not In The Wrong
Although some might assume the fee is unlawful, the government agency conducted an investigation into Wanjo and found that the RM1 charge does not violate any regulations. It complies with the guidelines set out in the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act of 2011.

According to a report by Harian Metro, KPDN stated that the restaurant clearly informs customers about the additional RM1 charge before they dine in the air-conditioned section, providing receipts for each payment. Notices are also posted around the restaurant indicating the fee, which led KPDN to conclude that the charge complies with regulations. A Wanjo employee further clarified that the RM1 fee applies only to customers over the age of 10 and is intended to help maintain the air-conditioning system. Many customers have reportedly expressed satisfaction with the air-conditioning and overall service.
The investigation into this matter actually began nearly three years ago, and KPDN confirmed that Wanjo was in full compliance, with no violations found. Given the findings, the ministry even recommended that the restaurant consider taking action against the individual responsible for the viral tweet to protect its reputation.
While the outcome may have surprised some netizens, it&rsquo;s clear that KPDN took the complaint seriously and thoroughly investigated. They also encouraged consumers to report any concerns of unfair or excessive charges at local establishments so similar issues can be properly addressed.
