Five Malaysians have been arrested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after Japanese authorities allegedly discovered approximately 5kg of cocaine worth an estimated RM3.1 million concealed beneath the insoles of their shoes.
The group, comprising four men and one woman aged between 19 and 26, had reportedly arrived in Japan on a flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The alleged smuggling attempt was uncovered during customs inspections, with investigators now examining whether the suspects were recruited by a Malaysia-based criminal syndicate.
According to Japanese media reports, one suspect claimed he was offered RM8,000 to transport the drugs overseas after being approached through Telegram. The case has renewed concerns about international drug trafficking networks that allegedly recruit couriers through social media and messaging platforms.
How Japanese Customs Uncovered The Alleged Cocaine Smuggling

The incident came to light when customs officers at Haneda Airport became suspicious of a passenger wearing shoes with unusually thick soles.
An inspection reportedly uncovered cocaine concealed beneath the insoles of two suspects’ shoes. Further questioning raised suspicions that they had been travelling with other individuals, prompting authorities to locate and inspect three more Malaysians.
The subsequent searches allegedly uncovered cocaine concealed using the same method.
Japanese media, including NHK, Kyodo News and Fuji News Network, reported that the five suspects were allegedly carrying around 1kg of cocaine each, with approximately 500g hidden beneath the insole of each shoe.
The seized drugs were estimated to be worth 120 million yen, or approximately RM3.1 million to RM3.2 million, based on reported valuations.
The suspects were reportedly arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s narcotics laws in connection with the alleged importation of drugs. Four have admitted to the allegations during questioning, while the 25-year-old woman has denied knowing that the shoes contained cocaine.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have yet to be determined by a court.

Investigators are looking into how the group obtained the drugs and whether an organised trafficking network arranged their journey.
One suspect reportedly told Japanese authorities that he had been approached through Telegram and offered approximately RM8,000 to transport drugs overseas. He was allegedly supplied with a specially prepared pair of shoes containing the concealed cocaine.
Other reports indicate that the shoes were handed to the suspects by another individual at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur before their departure.
Japanese police suspect the five Malaysians may have been recruited as drug couriers rather than acting independently. Investigators are examining whether financial difficulties and promises of quick money played a role in their alleged involvement.
The use of messaging applications can make it easier for recruiters and couriers to communicate without meeting frequently in person. However, the identity of the individual or individuals who allegedly organised this particular operation has not been publicly established.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the source of the cocaine, identify those responsible for arranging the shipment and establish whether the case is connected to a wider international trafficking network.
Malaysian Authorities Seek Further Information

Malaysia’s Home Ministry has also responded to the incident, with Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail saying that the ministry would contact Japanese authorities to obtain accurate information about the arrests.
He reportedly instructed Bukit Aman’s Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, to establish the facts surrounding the case.
The move follows other recent drug-related investigations involving Malaysians overseas, including the arrest of a Malaysian co-pilot in Indonesia and the seizure of 521kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine linked to a private jet in Laos.
Separately, the Home Ministry and Transport Ministry have been implementing 17 recommendations to strengthen security at KLIA and other entry points. The measures include enhanced passenger screening at destinations identified as high-risk areas.
Saifuddin said the initial list of high-risk destinations did not include Japan, including Tokyo.
The latest case highlights the challenges faced by authorities in identifying suspected drug couriers before they leave the country, particularly when concealment methods are designed to evade routine inspections.
Other Recent Drug Smuggling Cases Involving Malaysians

The arrests in Tokyo follow several other incidents involving Malaysians suspected of carrying illegal substances across international borders.
In September 2026, five Malaysians were reportedly detained at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta over the alleged smuggling of approximately 5kg of etomidate concealed in their shoes.
In July, a Malaysian pilot was also arrested at the same airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 70,000 ecstasy pills weighing approximately 25kg into Indonesia.
Earlier in October, authorities in Laos arrested 13 people, including a Malaysian co-pilot, over the alleged trafficking of 521kg of crystal methamphetamine through Malaysia and Laos, with the shipment believed to be destined for the Philippines.
Although the circumstances differ between cases, the incidents have drawn attention to the use of couriers to move illegal drugs across borders and the potential involvement of organised trafficking networks.
Why Is Cocaine So Valuable, And What Happens If Someone Takes It?

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant derived from the coca plant, primarily grown in South America. Its high street value, demand in illegal drug markets and relatively small volume make it attractive to international trafficking networks. Couriers may be recruited with promises of quick money, while drugs are concealed in luggage or footwear to evade detection. In the Tokyo case, the estimated RM3.1 million value for 5kg works out to around RM620 per gram, although actual prices vary depending on location, purity and market conditions.
Cocaine can cause temporary euphoria, increased energy and alertness, but it also raises heart rate and blood pressure. Its effects can include anxiety, paranoia and agitation, while more serious risks include seizures, heart attacks and strokes. Repeated use can lead to dependence, and uncertain purity increases the risk of overdose. Transporting illegal drugs across borders can also carry severe criminal penalties, making promises of easy money through anonymous online contacts particularly risky.
