Finnish Dinner Date

If you are single, tired of dating apps and open to meeting someone somewhere unexpected, Finland may have an unusual opportunity for you. Visit Finland, the country’s national tourism organisation, is inviting 16 single adults from around the world to take part in the Finnish Dinner Date, an all-expenses-paid, four-day experience in February 2027.

Selected participants will be flown to either Helsinki or Tampere to enjoy Finnish food, cultural activities and a group dinner with local singles. The blind-dating concept is also part of Finland’s effort to introduce international visitors to its regional cuisine.

What Is The Finnish Dinner Date?

Taking place between 9 and 19 February 2027, the experience will send eight participants to Helsinki and another eight to Tampere, in Finland’s Lakeland region. Winners will be allocated a destination by the organiser and cannot choose which experience they attend.

Each four-day itinerary will include food experiences, sightseeing, outdoor activities and visits to traditional Finnish saunas. The highlight will be a group dinner, where the eight international visitors at each destination will be joined by two local Finnish singles.

The dinners will feature tasting menus developed by Finnish chefs to showcase dishes and ingredients associated with their respective regions. Helsinki’s menu will be prepared by Adele Kinnunen, head chef of Café Savoy, who has appeared on Finland’s MasterChef Professionals. In Tampere, the menu will be led by Henry Tikkanen, a restaurateur who has represented Finland at the prestigious Bocuse d’Or culinary competition.

Visit Finland will cover round-trip flights, private-room accommodation, meals and scheduled activities. Although the campaign is framed around blind dates, it does not promise a romantic match. Instead, it offers participants the chance to meet new people over dinner while discovering Finnish culture.

Step 2: Complete the online application form

After posting the video, applicants must visit FinnishDinnerDate.com and complete the official application form, including a direct link to their submission. Posting the video alone is not enough to enter the contest.

Applications close on Tuesday, 10 November 2026, at 11.59am Finnish time (UTC+2). For applicants in Malaysia, the deadline is 5.59pm on the same day. Late entries will not be considered, and each person may submit only one application.

When Will The Winners Be Announced?

A panel of judges will assess entries based on creativity, authenticity and how personally applicants respond to the question.

The 16 selected applicants will be contacted directly, with the public announcement scheduled for 1 December 2026 through Visit Finland’s social media channels. Successful applicants must respond within 48 hours to confirm their place, or the organiser may offer the opportunity to another candidate.

Why Is Finland Hosting A Blind Dinner Date?

The campaign takes inspiration from Finland’s viral sinkkukori, or “single basket”, trend. At selected supermarkets, shoppers use pink baskets to signal that they are single and open to meeting someone. Visit Finland has adapted the idea into a travel campaign that combines the possibility of making connections with a showcase of Finnish food.

Finland has repeatedly topped the World Happiness Report, but its cuisine is less widely recognised internationally than that of some Nordic neighbours. Through the Finnish Dinner Date, Visit Finland hopes to introduce travellers to regional dishes and local ingredients, and encourage visitors to explore the country beyond its landscapes.

If you are single, aged 18 or above and have an interesting answer to what makes a perfect dinner date, this could be your chance to trade the usual dating-app introduction for a culinary adventure in Finland. Just remember to post your video and complete the application form before the deadline.

SIDES, the fast-food brand founded by British YouTube group The Sidemen, is heading to Malaysia as part of its latest international expansion. Kuala Lumpur has been named as one of four upcoming destinations, giving local fans the chance to try the group’s burgers, fried chicken and other menu favourites without travelling overseas.

The announcement was shared through SIDES’ official social media channels, with the brand also identifying New Cairo in Egypt, Kuwait City in Kuwait and Mumbai in India as locations in its expansion plans. However, the company has yet to confirm when its first Malaysian outlet will open or where it will be located.

Who Are The Sidemen?

The Sidemen are a British YouTube collective known for their challenge videos, gaming content, comedy, collaborations and large-scale entertainment productions. The group was formed in 2013 and originally brought together five creators: KSI, whose real name is Olajide Olatunji; Miniminter (Simon Minter); Zerkaa (Joshua Bradley); TBJZL (Tobi Brown); and Behzinga (Ethan Payne).

Vikkstar123 (Vikram Barn) joined a few months later, followed by W2S, also known as Harry Lewis, in 2014. Together, the seven creators built a sizeable online following through their individual channels and the Sidemen’s shared content, which has included gaming sessions, challenges, football matches and other collaborative videos.

Over the years, the group has expanded beyond YouTube. Its projects have included charity football matches, television productions, clothing and merchandise, business ventures and collaborations with collectible brands. Their ability to turn online popularity into ventures outside content creation has helped make The Sidemen one of the most recognisable creator groups in the UK.

However, the group’s line-up has since changed. KSI announced that he would no longer be part of The Sidemen, citing difficulties managing the group’s demanding schedule and a desire to spend more time with his family. The remaining members subsequently acknowledged his departure publicly, expressing that they wished they could have given him a proper send-off and wishing him well. The circumstances behind the decision have attracted online speculation, but no further details about any alleged disagreements have been publicly confirmed.

What Is SIDES?

SIDES is The Sidemen’s fast-food brand, bringing the group’s interest in food into the restaurant business. The concept focuses on fried chicken and comfort food, with a menu built around chicken burgers, tenders and wings, alongside sides, sauces and drinks.

The brand first established itself in the UK before expanding beyond its home market, including into Singapore. Its latest announcement signals a further push into international markets, with Kuala Lumpur among the cities selected for the next stage of growth.

For Malaysian fans who have followed The Sidemen online, the arrival of SIDES could offer an opportunity to experience a business associated with the creators in person. The brand’s popularity is closely tied to the group’s sizeable digital audience, although its success in Malaysia will ultimately depend on how well its food and overall offering appeal to local diners.

Among the menu options highlighted in its existing offering are chicken burgers, tenders and wings, giving customers several ways to try its fried chicken range. The brand also offers different chicken flavours, including Nashville, London Jerk and Mango Peri Peri.

The Sidemen’s Fast-Food Brand SIDES Is Coming To Malaysia

Getting a table at Rembayung has become a challenge for diners since the restaurant opened, with strong demand and reports of booking slots being snapped up for resale leaving genuine customers struggling to secure a visit. The popular Kuala Lumpur restaurant is now hoping to make reservations fairer and easier through a new booking system developed with Grab, introducing stricter verification and limits to discourage scalpers.

Who Is Khairul Aming and What Is Rembayung?

Rembayung is the first restaurant venture by Malaysian content creator and entrepreneur Khairul Amin Kamarulzaman, better known as Khairul Aming. After building a large following through his cooking videos and popular Ramadan recipe content, he announced the restaurant project in December 2025.

Located in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, the restaurant was developed on an 8,000-square-foot site, with a reported investment of RM4 million. Its semi-glasshouse, warehouse-inspired design combines modern features with a kampung atmosphere, using wooden elements and greenery. It can accommodate up to 250 diners and serves traditional Malay and kampung-style dishes, including masak lemak cili api, sambal udang, asam pedas and ayam rendang, alongside familiar local favourites and traditional kuih.

When its first online reservations opened in January 2026, demand was so high that the booking website became inaccessible within minutes. The overwhelming response highlighted the challenge the restaurant would face in managing reservations while accommodating its growing number of interested customers.

On 2 November 2026, Khairul Aming announced that Rembayung had partnered with Grab to introduce a new reservation process through the app’s Dine Out feature and Book a Table function. The move follows complaints about scalpers allegedly securing multiple slots and reselling them at higher prices, leaving genuine diners unable to book directly.

Under the new rules, each verified Grab user can make only one reservation every two weeks. Bookings cannot be transferred or sold to another person. The customer who made the reservation must attend and bring the same phone used to book, then open the Grab app for verification at the restaurant. Screenshots or images of booking confirmations will not be accepted.

The system offers both dine-in and takeaway options. Customers can search for Rembayung in Grab’s Dine Out section, select Book a Table, enter the number of guests, and choose an available date, time and booking type.

Each reservation requires a RM10 deposit per person, which will be deducted from the final food bill. Babies and children are counted as guests, and a booking can accommodate up to eight people.

Bookings are final, and deposits are non-refundable if customers cancel. Tables are held for only 15 minutes after the booking time, after which late arrivals may have their reservations cancelled. Each dining session lasts around one hour and 45 minutes.

What Happens to Existing Umai Reservations?

Before the Grab partnership, Rembayung used Umai to manage reservations. The platform allowed customers to compete for available slots when bookings opened, but heavy traffic caused access difficulties and long waits.

Khairul Aming said in September that the restaurant was testing a replacement system after scalping complaints. Customers who already booked through Umai do not need to make another reservation, as their existing bookings remain valid.

The Umai website was still displaying a waiting-room page at the time of the Grab announcement, and it was not immediately clear whether the platform would be discontinued entirely.

The Grab system is already open for reservations, although availability may be limited. Rembayung has indicated that around 20,000 customers had secured bookings for November, representing approximately 80 per cent of the restaurant’s capacity for the month. Further slots are expected to be released in stages through Grab.

Can the New System Stop Reservation Scalping?

The new rules are designed to make bulk reservations and reselling more difficult. Limiting verified users to one booking every two weeks restricts repeated reservations, while requiring the original booking phone helps the restaurant check that the person arriving is the account holder. Making bookings non-transferable also removes the option of simply passing a reservation to another diner.

However, Khairul Aming has acknowledged that tackling scalping is not easy. The new system is intended to reduce the problem and improve the booking experience, rather than guarantee that all misuse will disappear.

For diners, the key change is that reservations must now be made and verified through the Grab account and device used at the time of booking. Customers planning a visit should check the available slots and read the terms in the app carefully before paying the deposit.

Oriental Kopi has introduced a new menu in Bahasa Melayu, Chinese and English following public criticism over the lack of a Malay-language option at its outlets, with a Tamil version also being prepared.

Founder Dato’ Calvin Chan announced the updated menu on social media, saying it was ready in time for the opening of the chain’s first outlet in Kedah on 28 October. He said the three-language format was intended to make ordering easier and more comfortable for customers from different backgrounds.

Chan also thanked customers for their patience, explaining that the company was working to print the revised menus for its other outlets. The Tamil-language version is being developed and is expected to be released once ready.

The change follows criticism in early October, when a social media user questioned why Oriental Kopi’s menus were available in English and Chinese but did not include Bahasa Melayu. The issue gained wider attention after the comment was made in response to the brand’s patriotic “Maka Kami” social media post.

The criticism prompted Chan to apologise for the oversight and say the company would revise its menu design. The updated version now brings Bahasa Melayu alongside Chinese and English, while the planned Tamil edition would add another language option for customers.

Oriental Kopi previously clarified that it had not removed its Chinese-language menu. Instead, the company had been using separate English and Chinese menus, a detail it said had contributed to the misunderstanding.

The revised menu is being introduced as the chain continues to expand its presence in Malaysia. The company has estimated that reprinting around 2,000 menu books will cost approximately RM150,000. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) said the expense was relatively small, amounting to about 0.2% of its forecast core earnings for FY2026.

New menus to be rolled out across outlets

The first appearance of the trilingual menu coincided with the Kedah opening, while other branches are expected to receive the updated printed menus progressively. Chan said the team was working to complete the redesign and printing process, and reiterated that the Tamil version was also in the works.

The response has drawn positive comments from some social media users, who welcomed the company’s decision to acknowledge the criticism and make its menus more accessible to a wider range of customers.

Boycott calls have yet to affect sales, says HLIB

Despite calls for a boycott following the controversy, HLIB said Oriental Kopi’s sales had remained resilient, with management reporting no significant change in customer footfall. The research house described the company’s response as proactive and constructive, and said the public attention partly reflected the brand’s expanding customer base.

HLIB maintained its “Buy” recommendation and an unchanged target price of RM1.17 per share. It expects Oriental Kopi to record core net profit of RM67 million for FY2026, while noting that the share-price weakness should be viewed in the context of other pressures, including earnings misses, margin compression and the costs of expansion.

The company is continuing with its growth plans, targeting around 10 new outlets annually from FY2027. Several locations, including Aman Central, Merdeka 118, KL Midtown, Sutera Mall and Genting, are also scheduled for upcoming openings. Its recent outlets at Ombak KLCC and NU Sentral are reportedly performing in line with expectations.

Overseas, Oriental Kopi is preparing to open its first Jakarta outlet in the fourth quarter of 2026, with Mauritius expected to follow in the first half of 2027. Its consumer goods exports to China began in September, with initial orders described as encouraging.

While the menu controversy has triggered boycott calls and share-price pressure, HLIB’s assessment suggests that the backlash has not so far translated into a significant decline in customer visits or sales.

Oriental Kopi Introduces Bahasa Melayu Menu, Tamil Version In the Works After Backlash

KFC Malaysia has contributed 20,000 face masks to support vulnerable and underserved communities across the Klang Valley amid recent air quality concerns, extending its community outreach efforts beyond food assistance.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) and The Lost Food Project (TLFP), aims to provide additional protection to homeless individuals, underserved families and residents of charity homes and People's Housing Programme (PPR) communities.

According to QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd, the contribution will be distributed in two phases through its non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners, which collectively reach nearly 8,000 beneficiaries across the Klang Valley.

The initiative reinforces KFC Malaysia's commitment to supporting communities facing daily challenges while building on its existing efforts to improve food security and reduce waste.

The 20,000 face masks were officially handed over to representatives from KSK and TLFP during a ceremony at Menara QSR in Petaling Jaya on 15 October 2026.

The first phase of the initiative involved distributing face masks through the organisations' outreach networks to individuals who need assistance. On 17 October, KFC Malaysia representatives joined volunteers from both NGOs to distribute face masks and KFC meal packs to members of the homeless community at Pusat Khidmat Gelandangan Medan Tuanku in Kuala Lumpur.

Through their respective community programmes, KSK and TLFP support thousands of individuals and families, including residents of charity homes and PPR communities. Their wider outreach networks also enable assistance to reach communities beyond the Klang Valley.

The face mask contribution comes amid concerns over haze and air quality affecting parts of Malaysia, providing additional support to vulnerable groups who may have limited access to essential protective supplies.

The second phase of the initiative will be incorporated into upcoming activities under the KFC Harvest Programme, the company's food rescue and redistribution initiative.

Through these distributions, beneficiaries at participating charity homes and community centres will receive face masks alongside freshly prepared KFC meals and frozen chicken contributions.

QSR Brands head of governance Sahada Salihin said the initiative reflected the company's belief that its responsibilities extend beyond its food business.

She added that working with established NGO partners would help ensure assistance reaches communities that need it most.

The face mask donation also complements the company's existing community support efforts, allowing KFC Malaysia to provide essential supplies while continuing to address food insecurity among underserved groups.

Introduced in Malaysia in 2019, the KFC Harvest Programme was established to rescue surplus food from participating restaurants and redistribute it to underserved communities and charity homes through NGO partners.

The programme has since expanded to cover 170 KFC restaurants nationwide and has redistributed more than 61,000kg of surplus food, benefiting thousands of individuals and families across Malaysia.

By redirecting surplus food to communities in need, the initiative helps minimise food waste while improving access to food for vulnerable groups.

The latest face mask contribution builds on this established network, demonstrating how existing community partnerships can be used to provide assistance beyond meals and food supplies.

KFC Malaysia Reaffirms Commitment to Community Well-Being

Sahada said the company hoped to continue creating a meaningful and lasting impact through its collaboration with KSK and TLFP.

She highlighted the importance of working alongside community organisations to support people facing everyday challenges, adding that the face mask initiative complemented the work already carried out through the KFC Harvest Programme.

Through its latest contribution, KFC Malaysia is extending its community outreach to address immediate needs while continuing its broader efforts to support food security and reduce waste.

With 20,000 face masks set to reach vulnerable communities through its NGO partners, the initiative highlights the role of corporate-community partnerships in delivering practical assistance to those who need it most.

Malaysian kopitiam chain Oriental Kopi has responded to public criticism over its menus, which reportedly feature food descriptions in English and Chinese but do not include Bahasa Malaysia. The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on the use of the national language by local businesses and how Malaysian brands represent the country's multicultural identity.

The issue gained traction on Threads after a user shared a photograph of the restaurant's menu and questioned why Bahasa Malaysia was absent despite Oriental Kopi presenting itself as a proudly Malaysian brand. The post drew widespread attention, with some Malaysians calling for the menu to be updated, while others questioned whether the criticism was being applied consistently to other food and beverage businesses.

Oriental Kopi founder Datuk Calvin Chan Jian Chern has since acknowledged the feedback, apologised for the oversight and confirmed that the company is working on a new menu design that will include Bahasa Malaysia.

“As a brand born in Malaysia, we always respect Bahasa Melayu as our national language. We apologise for this shortcoming. We're already in the process of introducing a new menu design that will include Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.

In a separate response, Calvin emphasised that Oriental Kopi welcomes customers from all races and backgrounds. He added that the company remains committed to representing Malaysia through its traditional heritage dishes and thanked the public for giving the brand an opportunity to improve.

The response received positive reactions from some social media users, who welcomed the founder's willingness to acknowledge the feedback and address the concern.

Why Are Malaysians Criticising Oriental Kopi's Menu?

The controversy centres on the absence of Bahasa Malaysia from the descriptions of Oriental Kopi's food items, with screenshots circulating online showing descriptions presented in English and Chinese.

Some Malaysians argued that including the national language should be a basic consideration for a local restaurant, particularly one that celebrates its Malaysian identity. Others expressed disappointment that customers who prefer reading menus in Bahasa Malaysia might not have the same experience as those who are comfortable with English or Chinese.

Some users also called for a boycott until the restaurant introduces the language into its menus, while others urged the company to make the necessary changes rather than allowing the controversy to escalate.

The discussion also gained momentum after Oriental Kopi had shared posts expressing pride in being a Malaysian brand. For some customers, the absence of Bahasa Malaysia appeared inconsistent with that identity.

One customer, who described themselves as a regular at the restaurant, said they enjoyed its food and drinks but believed the menu could better reflect Malaysia's multicultural society.

The comments highlight how language choices can influence public perceptions of a brand, particularly when it comes to businesses that position themselves as part of Malaysia's local food heritage.

Some Malaysians Question Why Oriental Kopi Is Being Singled Out

Despite the criticism, not everyone agreed with the way the issue was raised. Some social media users questioned why Oriental Kopi was receiving particular attention when other food and beverage chains also feature menus primarily in English or use a different combination of languages.

Brands mentioned in the discussion included ZUS Coffee, Tealive, Luck Bros Kopi and Tea Garden, with some users arguing that similar expectations should apply consistently across the industry.

Others maintained that businesses should be encouraged to include Bahasa Malaysia regardless of their ownership, target audience or preferred menu language.

The debate has therefore expanded beyond Oriental Kopi itself, raising broader questions about how Malaysian businesses can balance their branding, customer preferences and the country's linguistic diversity.

While some see the inclusion of Bahasa Malaysia as an important way to recognise the national language, others believe criticism should be directed at business practices rather than focused on a single brand.

What Is Oriental Kopi Doing to Improve Its Menu?

For now, Oriental Kopi has confirmed that a redesigned menu featuring Bahasa Malaysia is in progress, although the company has not announced a specific date for its introduction.

Founded in 2020, Oriental Kopi is known for its Nanyang-style coffee, egg tarts, polo buns and other traditional kopitiam favourites. The brand has expanded across Malaysia, with additional outlets in Singapore, and has built a following among customers from different backgrounds.

Its response suggests that the company intends to address the menu issue while maintaining its identity as a Malaysian food and beverage brand.

The next step will be the introduction of the updated menu and whether the changes meet customers' expectations.

Ultimately, the controversy serves as a reminder that language can play an important role in how local brands connect with their customers. As discussions surrounding Bahasa Malaysia continue, Oriental Kopi's planned menu update could also encourage other businesses to review how their menus reflect the communities they serve.

Hopefully, more Malaysian businesses will be encouraged to include Bahasa Malaysia in their menus and embrace our national language.
