Customs Confirms: Pok&eacute;mon Cards Are Taxable Above RM1,000

The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has recently clarified that Pok&eacute;mon cards fall under the tariff category of &ldquo;playing cards&rdquo;, making them subject to tax if their total value exceeds RM1,000 when brought into Malaysia. The reminder comes in light of increasing confusion among travellers, especially those returning with sealed boxes, booster cases or high-end graded cards.
According to Customs Director-General Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin, virtually all newly purchased goods are taxable unless they qualify under specific exemptions. For personal, non-commercial items brought back from overseas, Malaysians are granted an allowance capped at RM1,000. Anything beyond that may incur:

The key rule is simple: if the total declared value exceeds RM1,000, tax applies unless the goods fall under a specific exemption. Pok&eacute;mon cards, being classified under "playing cards", do not qualify for any exemptions.

Every image generated by Muse Image includes Meta's Content Seal watermark, which is designed to remain attached even after editing or cropping.
The feature that sparked controversy allowed users to generate AI images by simply mentioning public Instagram accounts in their prompts. The AI would then use publicly available images from those accounts as visual references when creating new content.
Why Did It Face Backlash?

Many users argued that publicly sharing photos does not automatically mean they should be available for AI-generated content. Others were concerned that Instagram users would not be notified if their images had been used as references for someone else's AI creations.
The feature also reignited broader discussions surrounding consent, digital likenesses and the ethical use of publicly available content by AI systems.
Entertainment Industry Raises Concerns

The union warned that AI-generated digital replicas remain a growing concern and said users should have complete control over how their likenesses are used.
Meanwhile, talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA) said names, images, voices and creative work should never be used by AI systems without clear, documented consent. The agency also called for stronger safeguards that would allow creators to monitor and restrict how their content is used.
After Meta removed the feature, both SAG-AFTRA and CAA welcomed the decision, describing it as the responsible course of action.
Meta Reverses Course

Meta Removes Controversial Muse AI Image Feature Just Days After Launch Following Privacy Backlash

Former Youth and Sports Minister and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has been fully acquitted after the Federal Court dismissed the prosecution's final appeal against his earlier acquittal on four criminal charges.
The ruling brings an end to a legal battle that spanned six years, with the apex court deciding in a 2-1 majority that there was no basis to overturn the Court of Appeal's decision, which had cleared Syed Saddiq in 2025.
The decision means the 33-year-old remains free from all charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT), dishonest misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to funds belonging to Bersatu Youth (ARMADA).
Earlier in the day, Syed Saddiq arrived at the Palace of Justice accompanied by his family, fianc&eacute;e Bella Astillah, Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and former Education Minister Datuk Dr Maszlee Malik.
Federal Court Delivers Split 2-1 Decision

The three-member Federal Court bench consisted of Court of Appeal President Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, alongside Federal Court judges Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah.
Judges Che Mohd Ruzima and Sequerah formed the majority in dismissing the prosecution's appeal and upholding the Court of Appeal's earlier acquittal, while Abu Bakar delivered a dissenting judgment on three of the four charges.
All three judges unanimously agreed that the prosecution failed to prove the charge of abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million from Bersatu Youth funds.
The majority also ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish the necessary legal elements to prove Syed Saddiq had dishonestly misappropriated RM120,000 from Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise (ABBE), a company established to generate income for Bersatu Youth through merchandise sales.
As a result, the two money laundering charges, which were based on the alleged misappropriation offence, also could not be sustained.
Judge Sequerah agreed with the Court of Appeal's earlier finding that there was insufficient evidence to show the RM120,000 belonged to ABBE or another party, while Judge Ruzima concurred with the same conclusion.

One Judge Dissented On Three Charges

Although the appeal was dismissed, Court of Appeal President Abu Bakar Jais disagreed with the majority on the RM120,000 misappropriation charge and the two related money laundering charges.
He held that the fundraising proceeds belonged to the donors rather than Syed Saddiq personally, finding that the prosecution had proven the element of dishonest misappropriation because contributors were never informed that the money would be transferred into his personal account.
Abu Bakar said there was no need for the funds to pass through another account before eventually being deposited into Syed Saddiq's personal bank account.
Under his dissenting judgment, Syed Saddiq would have been sentenced to six months' imprisonment, one stroke of the rotan and financial penalties on the money laundering charges.
However, as it formed part of the minority opinion, the judgment carries no legal effect.
Case Dates Back To 2021 Charges

Syed Saddiq was first charged in 2021 over several offences linked to funds belonging to Bersatu Youth.
The first charge accused him of abetting former ARMADA assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali in committing criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million withdrawn from Bersatu Youth's account in March 2020.
He also faced a charge of dishonestly misappropriating RM120,000 from ABBE by causing the money to be transferred into his personal bank account.
In addition, he was charged with two counts of money laundering involving RM50,000 each after transferring the funds into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) account.
In November 2023, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found him guilty on all charges and sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the rotan and a RM10 million fine.
However, the Court of Appeal overturned both the convictions and sentence in June 2025, ruling that the convictions were unsafe after finding that the prosecution had failed to prove the essential ingredients of the offences.
The prosecution subsequently brought the matter to the Federal Court in a final appeal, which has now been dismissed.
Defence Welcomes Verdict As Justice Prevails

Following the ruling, lead defence counsel Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik described the decision as confirmation that justice had ultimately prevailed after years of legal proceedings.
He said the Federal Court carefully examined the evidence before concluding there was insufficient basis to uphold the convictions.
Hisyam also thanked the wider legal team, including Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Gobind Singh Deo and Datuk Yusuf Zainal Abiden, for their contributions throughout the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court proceedings.
Ambiga described the ruling as deeply relieving after six years of litigation, saying the defence team believed justice had finally been served.

Parti BERSAMA Malaysia suffered a crushing defeat in its first-ever election after all 15 of its candidates lost their deposits in the Johor state election, marking a difficult debut for the political party founded by former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli just 52 days before polling day.
The disappointing result came as Barisan Nasional (BN) strengthened its dominance in Johor, securing a landslide victory by winning 48 of the state's 56 seats and expanding its majority from the 40 seats it won in the 2022 election.
Despite the setback, Rafizi described the election as the beginning of BERSAMA's political journey rather than its conclusion, pledging that the party would study its weaknesses and continue building support ahead of future elections.

In a statement following the election, Rafizi confirmed that every BERSAMA candidate failed to secure the minimum 12.5% of votes required under Malaysian electoral laws to retain their election deposits.
For Johor state assembly (DUN) elections, each candidate is required to place a RM5,000 deposit, which is forfeited if they fail to obtain at least one-eighth of the total valid votes cast.
Based on preliminary figures collected from Form 14 polling documents and unofficial results, BERSAMA candidates received an average vote share of between 3% and 6% across the 15 constituencies the party contested.
The outcome also fell well short of the party's internal target of obtaining at least 15% of the vote in every seat.
"This means all BERSAMA candidates lost their deposits because they did not obtain the minimum 12.5% of votes," Rafizi said.
He added that the party would carry out a detailed review of the results to improve its strategy and better connect with voters in future elections.
Rafizi: BERSAMA's Journey Has Only Just Begun

In a separate message to supporters, Rafizi urged them not to lose hope, describing the Johor election as merely the first chapter in a much longer political journey.
He said building a political movement capable of returning power to ordinary Malaysians could never be achieved within just a few weeks.
"The results are not the end, but the beginning. We knew this journey would not be easy," he said.
Rafizi added that every vote, conversation, criticism and word of encouragement received during the campaign would serve as motivation for the party to improve.
He also reiterated that BERSAMA was founded with the aim of introducing a new political culture centred on honesty, public service and empowering Malaysians, rather than simply competing for political power.
"The seed has been planted. Now it is time for us to nurture it together. BERSAMA's journey has only just begun," he said.
Urban Seats Failed To Deliver Reform Vote

BERSAMA had focused much of its campaign on urban constituencies, hoping to attract younger and reform-minded voters.

The party contested several seats in and around Johor Bahru, including Permas, Tiram, Kota Iskandar, Skudai, Larkin, Perling and Stulang, but none produced the breakthrough the party had hoped for.
Most candidates recorded between 2% and 5% of the total vote, while Bukit Naning proved to be the party's weakest performance with just 138 votes, equivalent to only 0.8% of ballots cast.
Although some analysts noted that BERSAMA consistently secured around 3% to 4% of the vote in several urban constituencies, the figures remained far below the threshold needed to pose a serious electoral challenge.
Political observers have also suggested that the party's visibility on social media did not translate into meaningful support at polling stations, highlighting the gap between online engagement and actual voter turnout.
BN Dominates Johor As Opposition Suffers Heavy Losses

BERSAMA was not the only party to endure a disappointing night.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) finished with eight seats overall, comprising six won by DAP, one by Amanah, and one by PKR.
PKR's only successful candidate was former education minister Dr Maszlee Malik, who retained Puteri Wangsa with 41,821 votes in a five-cornered contest, defeating BN's MCA candidate by a majority of 5,744 votes.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) failed to retain any of the three seats it previously held, while MUDA was also wiped out after losing every seat it contested, with many of its candidates forfeiting their deposits.
Overall voter turnout stood at 69.57%, a notable increase from 54.9% recorded during the 2022 Johor state election.
According to early assessments shared by Rafizi, there was a significant swing in support towards BN across different age groups and ethnic communities, affecting candidates from PH, PN, MUDA and BERSAMA alike.
With Negeri Sembilan and Melaka expected to head to the polls next, BERSAMA has indicated it will use the lessons learned from Johor to reassess its campaign strategy as it prepares for future state elections.

Thailand Rolls Out Cross-Border QR Payments, Letting Tourists ‘Pay Like A Local’

More Malaysians are reaching their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) retirement savings targets, but the majority of active contributors still remain below the recommended benchmark.
Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong told the Dewan Rakyat that as of 31 May 2026, 3.04 million active EPF members aged between 18 and 60 had achieved their age-based Basic Savings target.
The figure represents 38.3% of 7.94 million active formal-sector EPF members, marking an improvement compared with the previous year, when only 2.71 million members (35%) had reached the same benchmark.
However, the latest figures also mean that around 4.9 million active contributors, or 61.7%, have yet to achieve the Basic Savings target set by EPF.
The Basic Savings benchmark refers to the amount EPF estimates members should have accumulated by the age of 60 to support a basic retirement lifestyle.
What Is EPF&rsquo;s Basic Savings Target?

Under EPF&rsquo;s Retirement Income Adequacy framework, members are encouraged to build savings according to three different levels:

The Basic Savings target of RM390,000 by age 60 is estimated to provide retirement income for approximately 20 years, from age 60 to 80, equivalent to around RM1,625 per month.
While achieving the Basic Savings level represents a minimum retirement benchmark, EPF has highlighted that higher savings tiers would provide greater financial security and flexibility during retirement.
Government Expands Initiatives To Boost Retirement Savings

Among the initiatives is i-Saraan Plus, a voluntary contribution scheme introduced for gig workers, e-hailing drivers, delivery riders and self-employed Malaysians. The programme provides matching incentives of up to RM600 annually, subject to eligibility requirements and a lifetime maximum limit.
Other initiatives include:
<ul>
<li>i-Saraan &ndash; Allows self-employed and informal sector workers to voluntarily contribute towards EPF savings.</li>
<li>i-Simpan &ndash; Enables members to make voluntary contributions of up to RM100,000 annually.</li>
<li>i-Topup &ndash; Allows employees and employers to contribute above the mandatory EPF contribution rate.</li>
<li>i-Suri and i-Sayang &ndash; Support retirement savings among women and homemakers.</li>
<li>i-Legasi &ndash; Allows eligible EPF members aged 55 and above with more than RM650,000 in savings to transfer part of their surplus savings to immediate family members.</li>
</ul>
Since its introduction in February 2026, 63 i-Legasi applications involving RM46.3 million have been approved, benefiting 86 recipients.
The government said these measures are part of broader efforts to improve retirement preparedness, especially as Malaysia moves towards becoming an ageing nation.
EPF Account Restructuring To Balance Savings And Financial Needs

He added that raising wages remains a key objective under the government&rsquo;s Madani Economy framework, as higher incomes would allow Malaysians to save more consistently over the long term.

Sessions Court Judge Datuk Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim sentenced him to a RM20,000 fine, with an additional three-month jail term if he failed to pay. According to local reports, the driver settled the fine on the very same day.
Why Foreign Vehicles Cannot Buy RON95

Malaysia has prohibited foreign-registered vehicles from purchasing subsidised RON95 petrol since 2010.
The subsidy exists to ensure Malaysian taxpayers benefit from government-funded fuel assistance, with eligible Malaysians currently paying RM1.99 per litre for RON95.
Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles are instead required to purchase RON97, which is sold at market prices.
While the restriction has existed for years, enforcement has become significantly stricter since 1 April 2026.
Previously, legal action was primarily taken against petrol station operators found selling subsidised fuel to foreign vehicles. However, under the revised enforcement measures, authorities can now prosecute both petrol station operators and the owners or drivers of foreign-registered vehicles.
This Johor case is believed to be among the first prosecutions under the tougher approach.
Authorities: Subsidies Must Reach The Right People

Johor KPDN director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo said the successful prosecution demonstrates the government's continued commitment to preventing the misuse of controlled goods.
She explained that enforcing the regulations helps protect consumer interests while ensuring Malaysia's subsidised fuel remains available for those it is intended to benefit.
Authorities also reminded the public that purchasing subsidised fuel using a foreign-registered vehicle is an offence under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
Under the law, first-time offenders can face fines of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both. Repeat offenders face even harsher penalties, including fines of up to RM3 million and jail terms of up to five years.
Companies or petrol stations found supplying subsidised fuel illegally may also face fines reaching RM2 million, increasing to RM5 million for repeat offences.
A Costly Attempt To Save On Fuel

Authorities did not reveal how much fuel the driver purchased.
However, the RM20,000 penalty far outweighs any potential savings he could have made by choosing subsidised RON95 instead of RON97.
At the current price of RM4.00 per litre for RON97 in Malaysia, the fine is equivalent to around 5,000 litres of premium petrol &mdash; enough to fill a typical 50-litre passenger vehicle approximately 100 times.
The case highlights just how seriously Malaysian authorities are now treating attempts to misuse the country's fuel subsidy programme.
Malaysia Vs Singapore Fuel Prices

The incident also highlights the significant difference in fuel prices between Malaysia and Singapore.
In Malaysia, eligible motorists currently pay RM1.99 per litre for subsidised RON95, while RON97 costs RM4.00 per litre. Eligible BUDI Diesel recipients are also able to purchase subsidised diesel at RM2.10 per litre.
In comparison, fuel prices in Singapore are considerably higher due to the absence of fuel subsidies, higher taxes and market-based pricing. Based on current pump prices, petrol in Singapore costs approximately RM9.30 to RM11.30 per litre, depending on the fuel grade and retailer, while diesel is priced at roughly RM9.00 to RM9.70 per litre.
The sizeable price gap has long made Malaysia an attractive destination for motorists crossing the border to refuel. However, Malaysian authorities have reiterated that subsidised RON95 is reserved exclusively for eligible Malaysian motorists, with stricter enforcement now targeting both petrol station operators and foreign drivers who attempt to misuse the subsidy.

Singaporean Driver Fined RM20,000 After Illegally Filling Up With Subsidised RON95 Petrol In Johor

The removal of the RM1 interbank ATM withdrawal fee has been welcomed by many Malaysians, but it has also caused some confusion after several people reported they were still being charged despite the new policy taking effect on 1 July.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has now clarified that the fee waiver does not apply to every ATM in the country. Instead, it only covers ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines (SRMs) that are owned and operated by banks participating in the shared ATM network.
If you are withdrawing cash from one bank's ATM using another bank's debit card, you should no longer be charged the RM1 fee&mdash;provided the machine belongs to a participating bank.
Why Are Some ATMs Still Charging RM1?

According to Fahmi, around 84% of the country's approximately 16,000 ATMs are owned by banks and are covered under the new fee exemption.
The remaining 16% are operated by independent, non-bank companies, which continue to charge the RM1 withdrawal fee as part of their own commercial business model.
These privately operated ATMs are not included in the industry-wide initiative announced by Malaysia's banking sector and therefore remain free to impose the transaction fee.
Fahmi explained that these machines generally operate under separate commercial agreements that differ from those governing the country's banking network.
How To Tell Whether An ATM Is Covered

If you're unsure whether you'll be charged, Fahmi says there's a simple way to tell.
Bank-operated ATMs usually display a prominent bank logo, making them easy to identify.
Meanwhile, independently operated ATMs typically do not carry the branding of a single bank and are instead managed by third-party operators.
As a result, customers using these privately operated machines should still expect the RM1 interbank withdrawal fee to apply.
What Should You Do If You're Still Charged At A Bank ATM?

If you are charged the RM1 fee while withdrawing cash from a bank-owned ATM, Fahmi urged consumers to report the matter to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
According to him, the central bank will investigate whether the charge resulted from a technical issue, an operational error or non-compliance with the new directive by the financial institution involved.
Consumers are also encouraged to keep their transaction receipts or bank statements showing the deduction, as these can help speed up the investigation process.
Bank Negara has been tasked with ensuring banks comply with the new fee waiver and protecting consumers from being wrongly charged.
More Than 14,000 Bank ATMs Now Offer Free Interbank Withdrawals

The fee waiver, which came into effect on 1 July, was introduced through a joint initiative by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM), the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM), the Association of Development Finance Institutions Malaysia (ADFIM) and Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet).
Under the initiative, debit cardholders can now make unlimited interbank cash withdrawals at more than 14,000 bank-operated ATMs and Smart Recycler Machines (SRMs) nationwide without paying the RM1 fee.
The move is aimed at making cash withdrawals more convenient and affordable by allowing customers to use participating ATMs regardless of which bank issued their debit card.

Fahmi's clarification came after social media users questioned why they were still being charged RM1 despite the policy taking effect.
Some posts showing transaction receipts quickly gained traction online, leading many to believe the fee waiver had not been properly implemented.
However, other users soon pointed out that many of the transactions had likely been carried out at independently operated ATMs, which are not covered under the exemption.
To avoid confusion, Fahmi reminded Malaysians to look for the bank logo before making an interbank cash withdrawal. If the ATM belongs to a bank, the RM1 fee should no longer apply. If it does and you are still charged, consumers are advised to report the incident directly to Bank Negara for further action.
